More than the Zips.

Kent Coaches and Support staff

22 coaches. including 4 grad assistants

12 support staff

Akron Coaches and Support Staff

12 coaches, zero grad assistants

6 support staff

Beyond that, Kent practiced 25% more than Akron was allowed, and most of that is on Arth.

And...I'm note re-re-re-typing all the other stuff.

Kent beat Akron in OT because they have a really good QB. They probably even have some NIL money to keep him.

And they presumably had the 38 staff personnel when they were going 1-23 correct? The only thing that changed was HC?

DeShields isn't a really good QB. He has a 46.4 QBR this year (104th in the country). He has only had 3 200+ passing yard games this season, with Akron being his only 300+ passing yard game.

Akron needs to get to Kent-level staffing, I agree. Them having a GM is interesting as well. However, the X's & O's, the motivation capabilities, and the execution on the field matter more than anything. That's my gripe with JoeMo.

That's pretty much it.  Yeah, Akron's a tough job.  No one's pretending it's easy.  Joe isn't the type of coach that has any chance of thriving at this sort of tough job.  Carney...just might be the type who can thrive at a Kent-type job.

As an aside, how about a Chris Creighton at EMU (EMU being the actual type of job that many here think Akron is), who is 61-82 at a school whose last three coaches (and related interims) were 39-125.  While his record isn't exactly stellar, if a guy can get EMU to five bowl games in 12 years...under current rules, between 1987 (their actual last bowl) and when Creighton arrived in 2014, they'd have had 3 or 4 bowl appearances (they had four years with an eligible record, but two FCS wins in 2011 would disqualify them without a waiver).

If Eastern Michigan can go bowling about half the time...Akron should be able to reach that goal.  But it will take work and the correct next hire when Joe leaves.  That, traditionally, will be the tough part of this equation.

We have donors who have contributed that much to Akron Athletics to create endowments. Just not for football. BTW, if you could share with me where I can get a guaranteed 10% return on my $2 million please send me a DM.

Look at the historical average of the S&P 500.

I think you would be surprised about EMU. They probably have one of the more involved NIL programs in the MAC. Charlie Batch is kind of the face of it and he has recruited other well off EMU alumni to help bankroll it.

In fact, they offered Caleb Williams $1 million if he would transfer to EMU. Obviously that was never going to happen and he went to USC instead, but the offer was on the table.

That's not how endowments typically are distributed. Usually 4-5% of the balance can be distributed annually

Correct, also pulling out 4%-5% per year allows the investment to grow so that it doesn't lose value to inflation.

Endowments are more designed to preserve capital than to look for rapid growth. They will probably be 30-40% bonds and 60-70% equities. Similar to what's recommended to retirees.

Don't forget about Max Crosby, too.

Parade someone like Eddie George through their door and see what happens.

Again, we had the Bowdens, Tressel, Faust, Amato at one point.  We "Fd" that up!

That's a pretty easy list to screw up. Amato? You're digging pretty deep to make a point.

Let's play a game. Who is more relatable to the athletes students alumni fans and general community around Akron?

Eddie George or The Bowdens?

Eddie George or JT?

Eddie George or Faust?

I can't believe I'm about to type this....  Eddie George or Chuck "Chesty" Amato?

There is a reason they sold out two games this season.

Oh, so they got serious about their program and leveraged the assets they do have.  Ah, ok.  That makes sense.

OMG let's play a game how many wet dreams has GP1 had involving himself and eddie george? i'll start with at least 15 this football season...

These players don't even know who eddie george is !!!

The team went 1-6 in the conference and 3-8 overall. they had three players recently arrested and if you were at the game last night you would have seen them on more than one occasion acting like less than desirables.

I'll stick with Joe Mo. thank you.

No different than the people proclaiming Deion was going to be the next Nick Saban 3 games into his Colorado tenure. Meanwhile, with 1 game remaining in year 3 he sits at 16-19 overall while playing in a weakened Big 12. That was also with a heisman winner and his son playing QB for 2 of those years.

Great players don't necessarily translate to great coaches. Let's see Eddie George make it to Detroit or at least make a few bowl games before we start praising his 'success'.

That's not to say a great player can't also be a great coach, but it's far from a guarantee that some are trying to make it out to be.

Sometimes you just gotta be the tallest midget.

Clutch play by Bruno! 🇩🇪💪🏽

5-wins despite the smallest staff, smallest budget, no NIL, can’t even afford grad assistants, no travel allowed for recruiting, going stretches without a meal plan, limited to 25% fewer practices than his competition…the Zips should have been UMass this season but instead won 5.

As much as my eyes burn from watching the game tonight I give the staff and players mad props for going .500 in the MAC and winning 5 games for the first time in 8 years while being blindfolded, with two cinder blocks tied to each coach’s legs.

We’ll see what the future holds for the 2026 Zips. The ball is in Goodrich's hands to objectively determine how much the restrictions placed on this staff contributed to the close losses to Wyoming, UAB, Kent etc. And to figure out a plan to break free from the crippling financial shackles imposed on this year’s team. UA needs to invest in football within reasonable and responsible limits.

Completely handcuffed, the Zips were within an eyelash of bowl eligibility. By providing the team with just the basics…the ability to travel to recruit talent, practices like everyone else, a couple grad assistants, a few bucks to keep some key players…it is the difference between winning 5 games and winning 8.

Well.. a win is a win. Before the season I said 4-4 in the MAC was minimum. They got that. But I also said major program changes were/are needed. Yep. The more I read posts here about the lack of support from Administration for for football the more obvious it is. If the Admin. refuses to support the program at a DI level then they have to get out of DI! The record spesks for itself. Changing coaches is like moving the bulbs on the Xmas tree. Same tree.

Either put up for DI or drop to 1AA or DII where U can afford to compete every season. Not a big Moorehead fan anymore but the problems go far deeper.
