Kreed5120 wins the prize for first using the dreaded "at large" in 2017-2018 basketball thread.3 points

The WCC and MVC have been leaps and bounds better than the MAC over the last 2 decades. We don't need Kent to be good per say, but a better MAC as a whole would certainly help with recruiting, raising fan interest, providing more quality match-ups, potential at-large opportunities, etc.3 points

For those ZIps fans traveling to Louisville, the UL ticket office responded to my email that they are seating Akron players' guests in Section 112. Would be great if we could all get tickets in this section or next to it so that we can be loud together. You can call to order tickets at 502-852-5151 or purchase through gocards.com. Likely need to call to request a specific section. GO ZIPS!!!2 points

I picture no scenario in which I'm sitting at home on selection Sunday thinking "man if only Kent won more games"2 points

I posted above about the BUGS loss but, actually, I'm with @a-zip in regards to the MAC & OOC schedules. At least once a week I check up on how all the MAC schools are doing & am always hoping for them to win. I'll do the same with football come bowl season. I just thought I'd get a comical dig in on BUGS. Now K.ent on the other hand? I hope they lose every game. Lol2 points

Lots going on in Zips sports, with the Football program's winning the MAC East, Men's soccer going to the Elite 8, and men's and women's basketball starting up. Easy to overlook our 4 time defending MAC Champion swimmers and divers. The women went to Cleveland for the Magnus Cup and dominated, with Maddy Myers cleaning house in the 100 back, 200 IM, 50 breast and the 100 IM, where she is now the fastest in the nation NCAA. Paloma Marrero, Ellie Nebraska, Sadie Fazekas, Paulina Nogaj, Brooke Lamoureux, all winners. Relays dominated. Carly Krail won both 1 and 3 meter dives. I know all eyes will be on Cub Cadet field Friday eveing and Ford Field at noon on Saturday and the JAR that afternnon, but this weekend the Zippys host their own Zippy Invitational for three days/nights Friday thru Sunday, and these women deserve some attention. Stop by Ocacek if you get a chance, you'll be amazed.1 point

Can't believe this one isn't started yet! If Toledo beats WMU, we get a rematch with them. If WMU knocks them off and NIU beats CMU, then that is who we get. I would think we match up better with NIU, but I wouldn't mind a chance to get avenge the beat down we were given by Toledo. Looks like we will get an extra 3 days rest than our opponent regardless of who we face. Ticket options for the game that the U seems to be offering: See you in Detroit!1 point

March Madness is the largest moneymaker for the NCAA. The cinderella effect and office pool is what makes it what it is. They aren't going to change the format to exclude mid-majors anytime soon. The reason the MAC hasn't been getting at-large bids is because for the most part they haven't done enough to deserve one. The MAC's last at-large was 1999 and since then you could really only make an argument we "deserved" and at-large 1-2 of those times since. The MAC was getting at-large bids in the 80's and 90's because it had better teams at the top of the conference. Between 1988 and 1999, I'm counting 11 players drafted in the 1st or 2nd round. That breaks our to ~1 per year. Over the last 11 years (same time frame) the MAC has had a whopping 2 players drafted. If the MAC can get back to recruiting and developing talent like it did in the 80s and 90s, the at-large bids will follow.1 point

We have hijacked this thread but it's painfully obvious that the NCAA doesn't want a final four consisting of a Cinderella. The fans at home might like it but they aren't the ones filling up the seats in a football arena obnoxiously converted into a basketball court. And Akron team coming out of an East region facing a St Mary's out of the West region would be a tragedy for the NCAA based on their out-dated thinking. These schools are now seeded to maximize the elimination of mid and low majors.1 point

Surprising lines like this suggest that Vegas knows something that the public doesn't. But what is it? Looks like a pretty enticing bet to me.1 point

The interview really wasn't anything special. Things we all know here on Zipsnation. Terry just hit on .. in the MAC your not playing for the final 4 so our goals are right here in front of us. As part of this he did talk about how when he came here we had back to back 1 win seasons and had fired 2 coaches in 3 years was the worst team in D-1 and only had 56 kids on scholarship. He said that wasn't what the university or Akron deserve. He said Akron should be among the top of the conference every year. He talked about that our non-conference games can be harder than our conference so the beginning of the year can be tough. Woodside is the best qb in the conference. We can't let Toledo jump out ahead like we did in the first game.1 point

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. Spot on post. Gonzaga and Wichita State became nationally respected powerhouses by winning games that truly matter in the NCAA tournament. Then they scheduled quality opponents in the OOC portion of their respective schedules, and won a majority of those games, too. I don't care a lick if a directional Michigan school, or Can't, or O-Who loses every single game. I worry about Akron, and Akron only. The MAC as a conference blows, thus so much discussion over the years of getting out of it. The MAC didn't lose to Gonzaga in '09, Notre Dame in '11, and VCU in '13; we did. Just about the only times I have ever rooted for a MAC school was Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl, and in the NCAA soccer tournament this year.1 point

Because Kent being good has helped us in that regard before? You think Wichita needed anyone else to be good in the MVC to become a power? Gonzaga didn't need anyone. We sure as hell don't need Kent.1 point

I wonder if the ABJ will have a full page featurette on the Zips on Saturday Morning...oh wait...probably will be buried behind 6 pages of Ohio State.1 point
-
I personally didn't mind seeing Kent lose to Valpo. Other than that, I agree with you, you would want your conference foes to do well in the OOC part of the schedule.1 point

I'll make that designation with my next donation. Maybe I can make it enough so that the facility will forever be referred to as First Energy Stadium, Cub Cadet Field, and the Skip-Zip Audio System.1 point

Just looking at the box score what stands out is Ivey needs to shoot less and Utomi needs to shoot more. Ivey needs to only shoot when he has a good look and not force. Going down the Kwan path.1 point

I'm not going to say that Toledo can't beat us by 20 points. But, to be listed as a 20-point underdog is a complete lack of respect.1 point

Excellent comment on Manel. Sam and Stuart are getting a great deal of the press. Manel's assists were huge yesterday. the young man has worked so hard to recover from a devastating auto accident all of the seniors have improved tremendously... nate,niko....and even...the often criticized pau1 point

Oh yeah???? Well, our women’s swimming and diving team is gonna beat yours by over 100 points next weekend, in the Zippy Invitational, so there!! Think you can troll us, do ya? HAH!1 point

Got our tickets for the game this morning and booked hotel this afternoon. See y'all in Detroit! Oh and, I was successful in getting my hands on the FULL ROO helmet after the game. I had to return it to its rightful owner of course but I nonetheless got a pic of me in that sucker! EDIT: Hey, I'm 46 but I'm still a kid at heart!1 point
