  1. This is one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen.

  2. What was really terrible about the Sayles play was after he hit the ground the ref stood there watching for a second and then gestured to play on. Meanwhile Sayles is going into convulsions! Terrible officiating. Buddy Mayborg needs to retire or go back to calling highschool games

  3. Just to change the topic slightly. ..... Loved the loud music during BG's last time out. That's more like it!

  6. Anyone have any insight as to the Baton type thing that the Zips are using when players are going in and out of the game?

  7. I thought Chapman's gold cleats he wore often this year looked awesome. I'm surprised more teammates didn't wear them.

  8. I'm not a huge fan of how it looks either. I do love how we are trying to innovate and not just jump on a trend though.

  9. Spot on. Akron's financial issues are well publicized. His supposed "demands in writing" have or are being met without him here. Keith has made and will make plenty of money to live more than comfortably for the rest of his life assuming he's managed it properly. Him making a donation would have made a strong statement, and something that is hard to believe wouldn't have been done if it "wasn't about him".

  10. I would just like to add to LRD’s post that Keith’s feelings were hurt by the comments made on this forum. That was probably as big of a factor as anything in his leaving if the truth was known. Oh, and the money.

  11. I'm not buying that Dambrot wanted to stay here, and I'm certainly not buying that Williams forced him out. The locker rooms, weight room, etc., were all upgraded. The JAR was/is going through a transition with the painted bleachers, new video board, etc. He can cry about the Info all he wants, but football is where the money/revenue is at in the NCAA. A new football stadium to replace a crumbling one was a necessity. Did the University maybe error on the budgeting for it? Possibly, but that's life. Dambrot was one of the higher if not the highest paid coach in the MAC, and was well compensated for the level of success he had achieved in his time here. Nothing he had done in the final years of his time here warranted any sorted of extra compensation. I think Dambrot saw some writing on the wall that caused him to jump ship to Duquesne. I think he knew this year was going to be a transition year regardless of if he had stayed or not, and that his value as a coach as at a high point. I think he saw that the A10 could be down, and now was his time to get into Duquesne, especially at the $1M price point. I also think he could hear the whispers about a stagnant program at Akron, feeling the pressure to either win in the NCAA tournament or leave. There were a lot of excuses used during his time here to create an illusion that outside factors were holding him and the program back. The MAC being a one-bid league, the JAR, and the fact that bigger schools wouldn't come play us in the JAR. They grew old and empty with the mounting pile of letdown losses. I also don't like the complaints about the JAR, and the supposed complaints about the offices/basketball dorms. I struggle with a college coaching making six figures - it's an academic institution first and foremost - let alone one that makes nearly $1M a year and complains about the financial backing of the program. The JAR isn't perfect, and we've all wanted either a major renovation or new arena, but in the end it doesn't make sense unless the finances are there. I've said it in other threads that Dambrot could have made a huge statement by saying he would donate a portion of his salary as the foundation for a new arena/JAR renovation. That is my explanation of my critical dialogue directed at Dambrot. Call me a "basher" or whatever you want, but I'm an Akron fan first an foremost. I'm grateful for growth of the program under Dambrot, and always have been. Two things. - The Can't/Akron Championship Game last year was brought up. Just in case anyone forgot, we lost that one with a flat performance. - I would still like to know what major offers Dambrot had that he turned down. I would additionally like to know what Dambrot's reputation around the college basketball landscape truly was, if anyone has any inside info on that topic.

  12. And to put a stop to all of the sucking-off going on in here, Duquense has not beaten anybody of note. The A-10 seems to be down this year. Obviously Duquesne's recent history is a lot worse than ours, but there is something to be said about the upper-classmen they have on the team as well as the the all-rookie team player from last year. I would argue Akron's cupboard was most certainly barer looking at this year in a vaccum (which you should).

  14. BALL GAME! WE WON A GAME IN THE MAC! Heck of a win. Everything went against us - officiating, injuries, size, etc. - and we still pulled out the W. That was impressive. Very fun to watch and the team seemed to enjoy it.

  20. Sayles & Cotton both looking really good for true freshmen. Sayles is going to be a beast & Cotton looks like a keeper! Great defensive intensity this first half. Much better than -vs- Buffalo. I thought we'd have to hold BUGS to the low-60's to win & we're on pace for that. Once Torrey Patton starts hitting his 3 the game's really going to open up for him. Right now he's awfully hesitant with that shot, but I still wish he'd launch 2 or three of them a game; he's got to get his confidence going with that shot.

  25. I was gonna say that I'll bet the kids love it. I retweeted it & Devanier Floyd almost immediately "Liked" the retweet. But a bit later Zips Equipment tweeted that it's not going to be used in-game; just a recruiting tool.

  26. KD made very good money for the MAC and had more job security than any MAC coach. Was signed for 6 more years. I think his contract was fair and he didn't deserve more than what he already had coming to him. I appreciate KD and am thankful for all he did, and I can't wait until we're done talking about him here. Go Zips.

  27. I am going out on a limb and predicting a win for today as long as the big three, Utomi, Jimond, and Duvivier play like the big 3. We need these 3 to score collectively at least 50 points. Utomi is the key and has to play like early in the season. Jimond needs to limit his turnovers. Duvivier needs to hit the 3 ball and drive to the basket. If we get production from any of the frosh it will be a bonus. (Can Cotton put together 2 good games in a row) I think that based on the Buffalo game that Bowling Green will pressure the ball. How we handle the pressure early will determine whether this team will compete. Looking forward to this game. Go Zips!

  32. This is BS. Keith Dambrot was under contract until 2023. He was the longest tenure MAC coach and the one with the highest pay. He had the freedom to hire his assistants and create ridiculous schedules year after year. These are the facts we have at hand. If you have any pieces of evidence that prove otherwise, please go ahead and present them. Coming here with a week old account with nothing but bashing our coach and AD does not earn you much credibility.

  33. Nice add to the team in Truex. That's a solid bloodline, considering his brother Martin is the reigning 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion. Impressive stuff from Matt! On a side note, only 36 days until the Daytona 500! BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY BOYS! LET'S GO RACIN'!

  35. Interesting. I haven't been paying much attention to the search, but I assume that this might be to replace Lou Ayeni, RB coach who took the same job as Northwestern. I'm sorry to see him go. Northwestern is his alma mater and his wife is from Chicago. Ames is not Chicago (I write from Skokie, adjacent to Evanston). I suspect there is more to the story, such as a better path to OC at Northwestern than Iowa State (where the OC is Tom Manning a Mount Union friend of Matt Campbell). Still, it is hard to imagine Ayeni leaving Iowa State. He is leaving the cupboard full. Ayeni "led" Matt Campbell to Iowa State by leaving Toledo first and bringing one of the guys in the RB room (Mike Warren, freshman offensive player of the year in the Big 12 three seasons ago). I've talked with Ayeni about being significantly responsible for Campbell coming to Iowa State because of the communication he maintained. He didn't deny it. And then Campbell brings David Montgomery. RB Coach for Iowa State is a really good job right now because he would be walking right into one of the best RB rooms in the country, featuring David Montgomery (first team All-American by Pro Football Focus based on analytics, not votes) and plenty of other talent. If our o-line can block better, Montgomery could have a Heisman-caliber year. It has happened before for Iowa State. See Troy Davis, the only RB with back to back 2000 yard seasons. And that was on a team that didn't have anything else, so everyone knew that he was going to get the ball every time. We will be talking much more about Montgomery and the other RBs as the fall approaches.

  36. Get Kostelac and Sayles a ton of minutes. It will pay off next season. The blessing in Gordon Hayward's (Boston Celtics) broken leg is the expedited development of Jayson Tatum. With extended PT I could see Sayles development taking a huge leap forward over the next few weeks. The regular season is a wash. From here on out, give the young guys a ton of minutes and see what they're made of. In the MAC Tourney, field your best possible line up and see what happens...you never know.
