  3. I am wary of any candidate that has only seen coaching success at schools with football budgets that eclipse UA's entire endowment. Likewise, I'm wary of any candidate that doesn't have at least coordinator experience. Being a head coach is more than just football. It's also managing an organization. You need to be able to hire a good staff and then put them in positions to succeed. You need to be able to connect with the community and work with the athletic department to fill seats. No amount of playcalling or position technique knowledge can prepare someone to do that.

  5. I'm a fan of what D'Antoni has done with the program. He inherited an 11 win team and transformed them into a solid mid-major. It's nice getting at least one semi-decent program to the JAR during the OOC season every other year. Here's to hoping they keep extending the series.

  6. Because all the other Zips athletic directors since the late 80's have made such outstanding hires?

  7. You do realize that 4.5 million of that 10 million per year is for the football stadium? Disbanding the program therefore would only cut costs by about 5.5 million. Meanwhile, we would lose the ~1.3 million guaranteed revenue from (insert P5 program here) & another ~1 million per year from the MAC tv deal with ESPN. We're down to a net -3.2 million and we haven't even discussed the revenue lost from ticket sales (including premium seating), donations made towards football program, and advertising/royalties. Also, we'd likely get booted from the MAC so we'd have to find another conference for the remainder of our sports. This could lead to potential increase in travel costs for our other sports. Subtracting the football stadium, which is a sunk cost, the football program itself is probably close to breakeven. The real cost savings from cutting the football program is from all the non-revenue women's sports we'd also be able to cut while still maintaining our Title IX compliance.

  8. My stream starting working at the 10 minute mark of the 1st half. Really having difficult time penetrating. We get into the lane and just stop. When we kick out for 3 we have missed some open 3 pointers. Both Poke and Sayles have had layups blocked from behind. Looked like fouls and Groce was pissed. We have very little inside game. They have made some tough 3 pointers. Our shooting will hopefully get better and their shooting will get worse. It always seems that this team plays much better in the second half. Jackson has had a difficult time finishing at the basket after he penetrates.

  12. I knew very little of the story.... very hard to fathom not seeing one's father for 14 years Marla is an outstanding writer....and I am very happy to see the great progress that Ezana has made this year. Thank you for posting this amazing story for all to read

  13. I don't buy the "He lost the team" sentiment. We shut out South Carolina in the second half...if you're a 4-7 MAC school...how do you shut out a bowl-bound SEC team for a full two quarters while you quit on your coach!? We forces four turnovers in that game. If the Zips quit, the score should have been 66-3. Kato is a sophomore that improved over the course of the season. He had a terrible Miami game early, but you'll get that from a QB in his first starting season. Had he stayed healthy, we probably at least win 2-out-of-3 vs EMU, BG and NIU. If you believe the George Thomas comment that Bowden would have been fired last year if wouldn't have won the MAC East, I contend if Kato didn't get hurt this year, it would have botched Williams plans yet again. If you want to tell me Bowden needed to go because he'd run his course and we needed new blood...the stands were empty...sponsorships were down...our OL play and RB's were perennially at the bottom of Division 1 football...I would have a tough time arguing it. But I never saw the players quit on the coach. They always played hard. They just didn't have enough talent and depth across the board. I think the next coach will reap the benefits of what Bowden has assembled here much like Brookhart won his MAC Championship with a large contingent of Owens' players, or Darrell Hazell won at Kent with Doug Martin's guys. Bowden got Kato for the tough "toddler years." The next coach will get him for 2 full seasons in his prime. Add Stewart...Morris...Boogie...Williams...what a great situation to step in to.

  15. This thing I like about him is he's effective, and consistent. You know what you're going to get from him night-in-night-out on both ends of the floor. The other guys have been up and down.

  16. Meh. 99% of the guys that played pro football couldn't hire a college coach if their life depended upon it. I like Groce, but it's a little early to call him a great hire. He was a low-risk, obvious choice. I'll hold off on the hosannas for the new women's coach until she coaches...maybe 10 games? I'll hold off on the hosannas for Sabo until he coaches...maybe 1 game? I hope we make a great hire, win a couple championships and fill InfoCision. But 30 years of history tells me there's a decent chance we'll screw it up.

  17. https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/mocnation/chattanooga-mocs-football-f66/ Even the Suckeyes didn't make the sexy hire. They went a young, up-and-coming coach with a great football mind (apparently).

  19. He has been a pleasant surprise. Aggressive with the ball in his hands. I hadn't even thought of him as a rotational player coming into the season.

  20. The difference between those Dambrot teams that were 3 point happy compared to this team is those Dambrot teams had proven 3-point shooters. I'm not sure if any of these guys outside of Utomi is an above average 3-point shooter. This team seems to have more athleticism at the guard positions than those Dambrot times. It would be nice to use that to attack the basket.

  22. I was wondering who was going to step up and take the last shot. Turns out nobody. We penetrated but could not finish. Too much passing in the last possession. I am happy that we had a close game. That will help us when we get to MAC play. Jackson finally penetrated and finished at the basket. He needs to finish at the basket when he penetrates. If it gets blocked so what. He is very quick. Sales and Poke were complete non factors. Very disappointed with their lack of offense. Sales looked a little slow on defense. I hope to see Riak soon. 1

  25. I don't know what to tell you if you think $4.99 a month for Zips games and hundreds of other sporting events (including Zips soccer, volleyball, women's BB, and who knows what else) is an outrage worth boycotting over.

  26. I asked that earlier....now the clarification is chair backs and bleachers and you can bring your own chairs and blanies..... "While seating in the bleachers and chair backs is available, fans may bring a chair if they so choose." - on GoZips.com now....(emphasis added by me)

  27. I worded it poorly. I'm not advocating for P5 schools to have 80 scholarships and G5 teams to have 90. Both would have 80. It's just the cuts at the top would trickle down the talent that is being hoarded on P5 schools benches. There would be cuts at the bottom of G5 rosters too and those players would go towards FCS squads.

  29. It's ESPN streaming service. The content on it is absolutely phenomenal. It has all the 30/30, it has a series of Kobe breaking down NBA players, has a series of Manning breaking down young QB's, has every out of market MLS game, tons of other foreign soccer, random college games, other misc sports, and series. I will definitely be renewing my subscription.
