  1. He is great recruiter. Lots of ties in Ohio/Midwest already established.

  3. NOT MAC RELATED: Did anyone watch the NIT semifinals last night? It was a pair of awesome games. It's a shame they were in Vegas instead of MSG. They definitely lacked the luster the NIT semis usually have. Anyway, North Texas of the C-USA took down Wisconsin in a slow-paced grind-it-out classic. Wisconsin led 54-46 with 9 minutes to go, and didn't score again. UNT won 56-54. They play a bit like Akron, I enjoy watching them quite a bit. The next game featured our old friend Aziz Bandaogo and Utah Valley against yet another C-USA team in UAB. UAB had the upper hand most of the evening, but Aziz helped keep it close. UVU got it to OT, but couldn't get the stops they needed. UAB onto the NIT final to make it a C-USA party. The C-USA now represents both teams playing in the NIT championship and a national semifinalist in FAU. This is some wild stuff. The NIT title game is on Thursday night, and of course the Final Four games on Saturday. I love seeing mid-majors do what they're doing right now. The only thing that could make it better is if we were in on the party.

  4. I don't want to seem biased, but going into next season Ohio and Akron seem like the 2 teams retaining most of it's pieces for next season.

  5. We'd all feel lost if we had a Zips head coaching hire and there wasn't some premature b!+ch!ng on some level!

  6. First feeling is I am impressed with this hire. I've followed Bill Fenelly's teams since he came here in the late '90s and had Brenda Frese (now Maryland HC) on his staff and one of her sisters as a player. Brenda coached Ball State and Minnesota before MD. Only concern is...does Latoja Schaben have any head coaching experience. None recently for sure. But a great pedigree and resume. Not sure how it could be instantly panned. She has a big first step ahead in keeping the talent currently on board that is MAC quality, before finding the obviously needed depth to make the team a contender. Keep an open mind Zips fans!

  7. He came on along more towards the end of the season IIRC. A couple hundred yard + games without checking the stats. But if there's a position we could afford to lose a contributor, its probably running back. Not to mention due to the timing, there's a decent chance he's leaving due to him having an idea in what his playing time is going to look like, and that reason is hopefully Lorenzo Lingard.

  9. For everyone on the team... they are going to have to work... let's just say again have to work... for the opportunity to play. My crystal ball is broken so I will leave all the prognostication to the rest of you all but as sure as the sun is gonna rise tomorrow whoever takes the first 5, comes off the bench, or serves as the unsung hero they will have earned it in the locker room weight room and practice court. The skill level and effort require to succeed is astonishing at division 1 and as I read I am reminded I love to be a zips fan but the hard work they are putting in requires more respect then any of us are going to be able to capture with a quick comment on one of these threads.

  10. I always wondered what PWO stood for. Now I believe it may stand for Pretty Worn Out.

  11. Guthrie loves him some Syracuse. Gensler has that going for him as well, which almost certainly played a role.

  12. Interesting hire. Again, no previous HC experience which is a concern to me. But he's been around a few different places, which is a good sign. Welcome, coach!

  13. MLB is supposed to be taking back the streaming rights amid the Bally bankruptcy, but I haven't seen an update in a while on that. It's becoming more of a free for all for rights. I would love for something creative to be done by Akron to become more available and marketable.

  15. Yeah, the "report" (if you can even call it that) left me scratching my head. As did the lack of other info. WBB doesn't have nearly the reporting that MBB has, so I think we should just take a deep breath until we see it on @ZipsWBB.

  17. If this is the case, I really don’t love it on the surface. I think it’s extremely risky to hire someone who’s never been a head coach before. And while it’s good that she’s had continuity, I think it also hurts that she hasn’t worked for a few different head coaches in her time. With that said, I do like going the P5 route. I hope whoever winds up being the next head coach can bring this program to some relevance and bring some life into the JAR. Akron women’s basketball has been a “friends and family” program for its entire existence. Let’s build a real fan base and have some fun! Go Zips!

  18. Generally I prefer a 6th man to have some scoring ability that way he can provide offense with the second unit on the floor. I think many fail to understand the starting 5 doesn't necessarily mean the 5 you use to close out games.

  19. Yep. Sounds like that was sandwiched between JUCO stops.

  21. You put a guy who was just the 9th man at Wichita in our starting line up. Come on lol he avg 2 pts a game. He’s not going to come in and be one of our top guys he’ll be in the Garv/Kobe Mitchell range mins.

  22. Why would GT come back to come off the bench? As much a Groce loves him how could you think he’d reward all the blood sweat and tears that kid has put in at Akron by bringing him off the bench his SR yr? Not happening.

  24. Personally, I think Tribble coming off the bench would be a big mistake. You want your 6th man to be a big scoring threat. Tribble will definitely slide around and play multiple positions while subs are being made, but I think he is best when the other starters are on the court as well, handling the offensive load. Groce is the one paid to make these calls though, so I'll trust in his decisions.

  25. I’ll put you down for Tribble coming off the bench then. Edit: I am sorry @RooFan !! I’m afraid in an attempt to be funny I took away from your very good post and enflamed the Tribble debate as well. 😔

  26. So much good is going to come out of it. Blackout restrictions will be gone soon and you'll be able to buy your team's games straight from MLB or NHL, or NBA.

  27. Yeah Ballys pretty much took over the Fox networks. They still have the football and men's basketball coaches shows, for however long they'll exist. What I've heard is MLB is getting rid of the regional sports networks so they can put the MLB games on streaming. What that will cost I don't know. That would leave the Cavaliers and Bluejackets without an outlet. The Crew switched to streaming on Apple TV. So if you still gave a crap about the team you pay for Apple TV and then pay for the MLS pass. Yeah that's a NO for me. These entities will continue to charge more and more until its not worth it anymore. Nothing good can come out of all this for the consumer.
