  1. I'd love it if this is what we get out of this guy. I'd love it even more if this Three Man Weave guy (above) is right that he's a potential MAC first team guy. But I'm just wondering how "developing into" are words that can be used to describe a guy who hasn't played in 2 years? And even more so, I'm wondering where a possible First Team MAC player prediction develops from a guy with only one year left to play, who averaged 6 point, 2 assists, and shot 37% from the field at a program that I would rate lower than Akron. Please, someone give me more data here to understand this.....Without telling me how he ranked in high school 5 years ago, or posting a link to a video that only shows his highlights.
  2. Heck, I don't know the numbers on how much a private school vs. a public school actually makes in the end, that can be funneled into building projects. Would it be wrong to assume that the fact that Akron gets state funding, and Dayton does not, makes everything come out pretty even at the end of the day? I'd need those more knowledgeable to clear up that issue. The fact that you're making it sound like Dayton has a lot more money to spend because their tuition is so much higher would be misleading without subtracting everything they don't get in terms of public funds, wouldn't it? Question: Is our tuition really 12k per year now? You guys don't want to know what I paid for tuition at Akron. Are you guessing that they might be getting some additional money from the NCAA for this project, because they are an annual tournament game host? I don't even know what they get as a cut of the ticket sales from those 4 games every March. But I've been there, and I can tell you that the Dayton fans really support those games well, and are the reason those seats are full for those games.
  3. That should be a lesson to at least a few people on this board about how much things can change between the time everyone gets all excited about a kid's high school accolades, and facing the reality of where some of them are a few years later. Some players work out. Some don't.
  4. May? Based on the fact that we haven't won one of those games in our entire D-1 basketball history (1980?), and that we've had far better teams than the ones we will be putting on the floor anytime soon, I'd worry more about winning games with any kind of regularity before I see even the possibility of a chance to just GET to an NCAA tournament again.
  5. Does the name Chapman ring a bell? Or, how about Bain? Just hope that a couple of these these basketball players that carried previous lofty ratings back in high school are more productive as 2nd chance transfers than the football players have been.
  6. Ladies and Gentlemen. You're witnessing the difference between 10,000+ support per game, and 3,000+ support per game. It's that simple.
  7. I'm actually jealous of just the damn video itself. Great job bringing out all the old footage of some of their most exciting moments to highlight their basketball history.
  8. I think I'd modify my thinking a bit if we are talking about MAC/Horizon kids who are simply transferring as a grad for their last year. My comments were directed towards a typical transfer. But, that also doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't focused on the possibility of playing basketball as a lucrative career after that final year, vs. how they viewed the MAC/Horizon school's ability to deliver on that dream.
  9. No, they think that other major conference schools will be better for their hoped-for future basketball career than MAC or Horizon schools. If some of these kids are seeing stars in their eyes because they have a chance to be playing somewhere more high profile, I doubt if any part of that decision involved the fact that a "more recognized" school will be on their future degree.....if they ever plan to get that degree during the time they spend at that school at all.
  10. It sure looked like you were telling us that they could use donations to pay expenses. I was just correcting that. But, you're right on everything else in your post above, and I agree that it's not going to change. But what I'd like to change is that I wouldn't have been forced to know this subject as well as I have throughout the course of my career. It's really exciting stuff.
  11. We were talking about massive salaries (like Saban's). But my previous comment applies here anyway. Although a for-profit company can use their charitable foundation to support their own selected causes, if you believe that this is a way to both bring in donated money and operate as a for-profit, and just simply use that money to pay company expenses, you've really been misinformed. You can roll your eyes all you want, but I again wish you luck trying to pull that off.
  12. I don't know how else to correct you on all of this. But good luck to you if you'd like to try to advise a for-profit company to use their foundation as an alternative way to pay the bloated salaries of the company's highest paid employee.
  13. But, that's the focus of the overwhelming majority of news outlets today. So, that still makes ZipVoice's gripe about the stark difference between sports coverage for the Zips and the Bulls a valid one.
  14. Yes, Public education Institutions ARE non-profits. If they weren't, they would not be able to solicit donations. Which is also part of what has escalated this problem. The "big" sports school are getting massive amounts of money donated from private sources.
  15. Let me clarify this even further for you. The 501C organizations are non-profits. The 501C3 subcategory is for charitable organizations, like some that you list here. There's other categories that cover Labor Unions, Trade Organizations, etc. They are non-profits and don't pay federal income taxes, but they are not charities. You may want to check about the NFL. Aren't they a 501C6 ?
  16. Note that he said "the higher the level of competition". Something that was lacking in many of those Browns QB controversies.
  17. No doubt. That's why I specifically keep talking about him in terms in what he could potentially contribute OFFENSIVELY.
  18. I'm hoping that he's one of those guys who is just starting to escalate his offensive game at the end of his high school career, and will end up being a real steal for us.
  19. Don't feel bad at all. Thanks for sharing your story. I agree with your assessment 100%. Obviously, the desire by the local major newspaper to cover their local D-1 mid-major program is not lacking everywhere. But, the only thing that's going to change it here in Akron is to raise the demand for Zips coverage. You could certainly do your part and share that story with the decision-makers in the sports dept. at the ABJ.
  20. I'll never argue his value as an employee, because of what he generates. In the business world, he's probably a fantastic bargain. What makes me sick, and always will, is that someone is making this much money working in intercollegiate athletics at a public University. He's surely become the John Wooden of college football. But what has happened over the last 40 years to escalate this money machine to this level is pretty disheartening to me. I'd be happy to return to the days where Harvard, Yale, Army and Navy were the college football powers. That was real COLLEGE football.
  21. Well, well. I've been trying to figure out why everyone in the concourse is running into each other all the time. I guess I just figure it out. Thanks. (insert wobbly drunk Zips Fan emoticon here)
  22. That's the whole problem with us all being "armchair recruiters", and trying to evaluate people from watching highlight reels. Until you can get these guys in a gym and let your team start knocking each other around a bit, you never really know what you have.
  23. ZIP....I still think it was All About The Beach
  24. I agree on the travel problems getting into the stadium. But I've experienced that in plenty of P5 cities. And the difficulty with hotel space is true, because it's nowhere close to any highly populated area. So, plan early, and drive in early. But other than that, I highly recommend State College!!
  25. You mean, a 3rd or 4th string P5 player like Warren Ball? Plenty of people here were excited about that situation (still are) and we knew we were only going to have him for one year. We'd likely have a lot more to benefit from this situation, if we could get him.
