Which HS Player Do YOU think the Zips Should Recruit?

We all know the Zips need some defensive upgrades.

Not sure what his offers are right now and if he would fit/translate to FBS football, but class of 2024 Kirtland RB/MLB #39 Macguire Boyd had a couple MASSIVE hits today. Here are both of the hits:

That's Mogadore's division. Mogadore is also a powerhouse in that division but they rarely have a player recruited to the FBS level. This year is an exception, however, as they have a TE committed to OU.

Yeah, normally the lower divisions rarely have a player recruited to FBS level. The D5 state championship game was unique this year where you had one team with D2 and D3 college recruits while the other had some FBS recruits, including a running back going to Wisconsin. The team with no D1 recruits (South Range) won 53-27 over the team with FBS recruits (Ironton) and held the Wisconsin commit (Jaquez Keyes) to nine carries for 22 yards. Really enjoyed watching some of those games this weekend. 

 

Kirtland posted a sideline angle of that Clowneyesque hit so I'll share that here. I would definitely give that kid a walk-on opportunity. He could become a contributor on special teams early on.

The Williams kid, good ppl, brother played at Ashland, dad played at Toledo & I believe mom played softball at Toledo

If Buffalo pulls that one off, they have a mortal lock on the "Hoban pipeline"!

 

I remember when Andy Hipsher was in his later HS years, even though he was heading to Akron, his dad thought it was important for him to go through the recruiting process.

 

And, there's no guarantee that the next "Larry" Williams, "Curly" Wistercill or "Moe" Helsel doesn't succeed Guthrie and ditch Joe. Or, Joe naturally moves on from UA. A million things can happen between now and 2026 so I get why he's going through the same process as any other HS '26 talent.

One note: this Moorhead attends Hawken.  How many sons does JoeMo have, and do they attend different schools?  I had heard a Moorhead went to Hoban (I think from Joe Dunn).

One son at Grove City college and one at Hawken as far as I know

Yes, no Hoban kids. Donovan played a bit at Hawken this year.

 

His oldest son being at Grove City College had a lot to do with the decision to make the move to Akron. He absolutely loves being close to him, and going to see him play.

 

On the last Zips Live Joe appeared on, he said something along the lines of "there's not enough commas and zeroes in the world more valuable than getting to watch them play"

With respect to local guys like Sperling, I think it is important for the staff to establish some relationship with them even of they know they won't be getting the kid as there's always a chance the kid may not work out at his first stop and look to come home.  One example I can recall at UA is Se'von Pittman.

That's a good attitude to have, because we don't have a lot of commas and zeros to offer.

I’d assume they are. JoeMo has made the 4 hour radius a recruiting priority. So if there is reciprocal interest, I’d imagine the staff is plugging away.

Jamal Davis for sure, a lot of Sperling talk & I hope he does great things and maybe he could end up here.  He is 5’8”, reason he only had 1 offer before Mr. Football.  Watched him play every week.  I believe Blue and Gold said best running back he has seen at Hoban.  Not even close to Trayanum.  He would have broke every record if they used him as a full time RB.  They used Dickerson & ran Trayanum out there for every short yardage and when they needed him so he could play LB full time.  Sperling is a beast though, not taking anything away from him but next level everyone is bigger & faster & will see how he does

I’ll add him back on the list since he carries a Zips offer, but with Bowen and Spriggs already committed, I’m not sure if there is room or need for another LB. I think another scholarship LB would need to transfer out first.

Interesting that we haven’t offered Jacqai Long out of Hoban. I haven’t seen him play, but I’m sure others here have. Kid looks like he can sling it on his film.

I mentioned (in another thread?) how I was surprised Jacqai was ranked so high nationally as he is.  He's really not very good. At all.  Teams didn't have to fear what Jacqai could do at all last year and could stuff the box trying in vain (mostly) to stop Lamar Sperling.  Jacqai has a nice arm but doesn't seem to be able to read defenses well.  Coach Terrell rarely even tried to throw downfield last year (and Hoban always has a handful of great athletes playing WR).

I’m curious to see if he makes a leap his senior year. Long definitely has the physical attributes with a big arm and fluid throwing motion. Although, we’ve also offered instate prospect Ethan Grunkemeyer who I think is a better prospect despite not having a rating, yet. Long is just in the our backyard. I know Illinois is interested in Long, but they want to see him play in person before offering.

I suspect Long has impressed in camps as his performance at Hoban has been underwhelming.  I would say though that Hoban's emphasis on the run has limited his opportunities.   His performance in the final was not pretty.

Charlie Christopher (2025) from Uniontown Lake HS is definitely a kid I would keep an eye on. 6'1 215 LB as a current sophomore, looks, plays, and lifts the part. Started and had 120+ tackles on a Lake team that made it to the regional final, son of Matt Christopher who was an absolute monster for Lake in the early 90's.
