I wish I could find some highlights from the game but YouTube doesn’t seem to have any. I could be mistaken, but I believe this was also the first game that groce started the tradition of going and giving high fives to the student section after every game. Also a note of this game which I just looked at the box score. The Zips made 7 threes this game, and all of them were from Bryan Trimble who made 7 on 12 attempts. MDZip
Zips, make sure this doesn't happen on Enrique's big night. 😊 1 1 1
1981 grad
I find it amazing that this thread is 28 pages long and it started 3 years ago when Capt. Kangaroo thought Freeman might be a top 10 player in Akron history even though he was only in his 2nd year: "I think when all is said and done, Freeman’s numbers will merit a Top 10 all time ranking. He’s only going to get bigger and better. And he’s not going to do something stupid to curtail a great career." The discussion then compared Freeman's game to other great Akron players and I commented at that time that as a 2nd year player it was still to early to tell if he was as good as if not better than the other great Akron players. With his jersey going to the rafters, I certainly think he was the most dominant Akron player that I have seen since watching the Zips. The only negative is that he did not bring us that elusive win in the NCAA tournaments. I still go back to that game against UCLA when the refs called a very questionable illegal screen on him and fouled him out of the game to protect the blue blood UCLA and made sure they got the win. Worst call in Akron history. Edited February 16 by 1981 grad 6

Worst call in Akron history. Enrique's is truly an amazing story. I will never forget that UCLA game. With 'Rique still in the game they maybe make Akron basketball history. That was a tough whistle. That was probably the closest many will get to a Zips Basketball tourney win in a lifetime and he was the catalyst of it all - not to take any credit away from the rest of that year's team. A very special memory for sure. It will be nice to celebrate on Tuesday 😀
Let'sGoZips94
For those who don't know, Nolan works under the name AO1 Creative. He is the entire package behind our sudden explosion of social media content in the last year or so. Truly a special talent and I'm glad we're partnered with him.

My favorite parts are his shot blocks. My only objections - the subtitle of that song is "Good riddance". No one would ever feel that way. That dunk against Miami in the MAC Tournament should be made into a poster or logo silhouette.
zipsrule
Chris Payton should have sent a video message retracting his claim that he was a better player than Enrique.

The one highlight missing, unless I missed it, was his game winning dunk at Northern Kentucky. Identical silhouette.
zippy5
so what's the story behind UA not actually retiring numbers? Like, 25 was already in the rafters. Same with 22, and Dawson wore it. 44 was up there before Zeke...

Historically, basketball has been reluctant to retire numbers as the tradition is to not have a number over 55, as those make it more difficult for an official to signal to the scorer's table with two hands. With only 55 numbers, you could eliminate a decent portion of the numbers over time as you retired them. As a result, the jersey goes in the rafters rather than getting retired.

Z.I.P.
Is there a video of Rique's words to the assembled multitudes at halftime? I couldn't make it. My frequent flyer miles only got me to LA.

While I was aware of the 0-5 digits, I didn't think about how retired numbers would impact that. Makes sense. I motion to make a second level of actually retired numbers. UNC does this, they have tons of "retired jerseys" and then a row of retired numbers hanging. I guess they wanted to honor that MJ guy

It also has the video from the former players that hasn't been posted anywhere yet 3
