If there is money available to fund a $1.3M sponsorship with the Browns there is money to field a competitive football program.

The annual budget is approximately $260 million. The $1.3 million we got from OSU is a drop in the bucket. Imagine what they could do if they stopped playing shell games with the athletic departments money.

To me, it's not about the money. It's about the purpose of athletic department. Figure that out and there is a different perspective on the money.

Exactly!  As long as other departments and organizations can use athletics as a negotiating tool to protect their turf, things will never improve. If other programs had to operate under the financial reporting requirements fostered on Athletics, every one of them would look terrible.

I’m not a title 9 expert, but cutting women’s Lax and Men’s baseball and cc should be back on the table as that’s was was most recently added. Honestly, everything besides men’s basketball and football should be on table. Yes even soccer.  I don’t like it, but if this is where college athletics is going and we are hamstrung as a University, we need to adapt. Those two sports are your gateway to the university, with ability to profit at the individual sport level AND numerous examples of enrollment increasing when either of those two teams have success on a national level.

I am shocked at the lack of institutional support our football program receives. Unsure if it’s a new development or just recently brought to light, but it’s no wonder we are what we’ve been. The issue is much bigger than the staff and players. If the football team has to whore themselves out to support athletics, sacrificing any chance of a successful season, they need to get a disproportionate cut of the revenue from the buy games.

I'm not shocked.  UA has almost 400 million in debt, mostly for infrastructure investment over the last 20 years. We're about to reduce faculty, again, because enrollment is about 50% of what it was at its peak.  I'm not sure where the additional money for football in particular and athletics in general is supposed to come from.

Never saw a tweet like this before. I pray this doesn't become a thing 🙄🤦‍♂️

Just wait until they start saying God declined the offer for them.

Lou Holtz shouting into the void

Oh, Lou..... The current era in CFB is undesirable and disappointing in many ways, but Holtz can't/shouldn't romanticize the past either. It was never clean and never about academics no matter how we choose to remember it.  Teamwork and character?  Booster payments, academic fraud, racking up hundreds of victories in a century against teams that were either helpless or underfunded. So what's really changed?

Travis Hunter won the Biletnikoff Award for best WR.

Meanwhile, San Jose State's Nick Nash was the WR Triple Crown King this year leading the nation in Receptions, Receiving Yards, and Receiving Touchdowns.

College Football delivered the proverbial "nail in the coffin" message to G5s with their awards: they don't want G5s anymore.

I hope he finds some replacements in the portal.  It just seems like the team is running in sand having practically to rebuild from scratch each year.

I think a significant number of us have been sseing that. Akron can do nothing to change the direction of DI football.Lets stop talking about basketball. Its a different world. For god's sake a a major university just hired $ Bill Belichick as its HC. He hired Ernie Lombardi as his GM! $ Bill said he was going to run UNC like a professional football team. There is no reason for teams at the MAC level to play or be connected with programs like that. We can hem and haw all we want about what we think would make Akron football consistently competitive where it stands now.

Given the current state of the University overall, especially financially there is little reason to believe that the Administration is going to make a bigger commitment to football specifically or to athletics generally. Its time for athletics programs at the MAC level to either collectively or individually go a different direction.

By the way, do we have a new AD yet?

This is kind of where I stand as well. The majority of the MAC schools have already gutted the basketball budget to focus on football. We get more return for the $$$ by focusing on basketball since others are committing less time and resources to it.

No MAC school is going to sniff the 12 team playoff. Not in this day and age of NIL and freedom to transfer at will. It's still very possible for a MAC school to make the Sweet 16. There is no reason that MAC school can't be us.

The only way a MAC school gets in is by going undefeated. That would require a weak out of conference slate and most MACs want their payday(s). Strength of schedule didn’t mean anything to the committee this year, so assuming that stays consistent, teams just need to win.

If that was true then Army would have gotten in ahead of all 2 loss teams. SOS certainly matters to some degree. Maybe not as much as some would prefer *cough Alabama*, but it definitely is weighed in.

Army is considered a G5 and they aren’t going to take two G5s. This year wasn’t about getting the best 12 teams in, it was about diversification in an attempt to get the most eyes on a product. MBB still has its flaws and it took a while to get a better selection process, but they got there. I’d bet all three 9-3 SEC teams would wipe the floor with a few of the teams that made the playoffs, but we won’t find out. I’m fine with it, but again, I don’t think the best 12 teams got in and SOS wasn’t a factor this year.

Bama wouldn't be ranked ahead of several 2 loss P5 teams if SOS didn't matter. OSU wouldn't be ranked ahead of 1 loss Indiana. Penn State, Texas, and Georgia wouldn't be ranked ahead of Notre Dame. SOS certainly plays some sort of factor. Saying it meant nothing at all is just disingenuous. It just didn't mean as much as you wanted it to, which is fine if you feel that way. I won't argue there.

If the committee currently cared only about ratings then Alabama would be in over SMU. Bama has a vastly larger following and would attract a larger TV audience. I don't disagree that the 12 best teams likely aren't in. However, claiming who the 12 best teams are is very subjective. You don't have the large sample size like you do in basketball to more accurately measure teams. More and more conferences are moving to 9 game conference schedules. The SEC remains at 4, but they all play an FCS game so it's still really only 3 OOC games thar you can use to measure them against others.

Let's not forget that Lou left every single program he coached either on probation or on the verge of probation.
