Should Zips Play in CBI?

Last night on the post game Joe Dunn ask Groce about going to a post season tournament and Groce indicated it was up to the administration.  I think if the players want to do the CBI, I hope Akron would accept an invitation.  Florida in March would not be detrimental to the team.  Last year OU played and the year before that Bowling Green played in this tournament.  I think it would give our younger players, Johnson and Johnson to get more experience and a nice sendoff to our 2 seniors.  Any thoughts on the CBI?

As I mentioned in another thread, now that it is a single venue tournament I wonder why the CBI doesn’t make their event a multiple game guarantee event much like the Zips played in the Caymans this season. With 16 teams it would just be one more round but giving teams a certainty of multiple games may make the entrance fee seem more worth the cost and it could do wonders for young player development

If the Zips firmly believe they deserve the NIT and don't make it, they should not play. If they don't make the NIT and understand they reasons why they didn't make it,and are ok with playing some more games, go for it. Just do the fans a solid and give it 100%.

When MAC schools get selected by the NIT committee it usually means they deserved to be in the NCAA and NIT-worthy MAC teams have to play in a lower tournament or end their season.

Case in point, when is the last time a MAC school had a home NIT game against a “bigger” opponent?... certainly there had to be a top MAC squad better than a middle of the pack “major” conference squad according to the metrics at some point in the last 10-12 years.

Toledo against Dayton last year. And this was only because Dayton's arena was being used for the "play in" round of the Dance.

OK, I should have asked it as “seeded to be at home in the first round”.

Toledo is now a three time defending regular season MAC champ that won 17 straight games until a conference final loss... and I guarantee you they don’t even get a home game in the first round of the NIT.... my guess is that they end up on the road against Cincinnati.... and they deserve to be a 3 seed at worst in the NIT.

What is the MAC'S history on NIT bids? Don't we nearly always get 2 teams (or more) in?  I'm ready to go play Cincinnati or another #1/2 seed.  Add to our resume'.

Over the past 15 years or so, it is very rare for the MAC to get more than 1 team in the NIT.  Two seasons ago (approximately) both Toledo and Buff got in, but I believe that was the first time since 2008.  The year before no MAC school got in as the regular season and conference champ was the same team.  They actually passed a rule that the regular season conference winners get an automatic bid to the NIT if they do not go to the NCAA Tournament (which in the MAC means you lost the MAC tourney).  The rule was passed largely due to the 26-7 Akron team with Romeo, Dru, Wood, Dials, etc. being left out of both tourneys.  The MAC carries no clout or prestige with selection committees, and the tourneys would rather have the 9th or 10th place teams from power conferenced than mid-majors.

If you check the recent history, the CBI and CIT (I believe they changed the name) are the only places you will ever see multiple MAC bids.

It looks like the CIT got postponed twice for COVID and then came back last year as the The Basketball Classic.  The web page just lists 2022 details and nothing about 2023 so it looks like we saw X's last game which sucks.  I will be interested in what the AD has to say about the decision-making process for post season play.  I really wanted one more run with this crew.

In the past, I would have been fine being done. But I really enjoyed this team all year, as frustrating as it was to watch early on. But we’ve only had the chance to play in the postseason once under Groce, and this team is plenty deserving. I have no idea what goes into this, but I’m pretty bummed tonight. We’ve had far worse teams continue playing in the past.

I actually preferred that one to the CBI last year. Something about games being on campus.

When and how do we hear from Guthrie or Groce about this? I would love to hear the reasoning.

Zips could have really made a run against this field. Nothing against Indiana State but when that is your #1 seed a 22 win Akron team would at least be competitive.

Interesting to see that our former coach is playing on in the CBI as well as I remember him saying he didn’t think the Zips should play in one or two of these while he was here
