Around the MAC

That's just it ... statistics say they may be the worst team in the MAC (outside of NIU).

They're going to win against lesser competition more often than not thanks to their tough play style, that's why the game is played. Kent is ranked "higher" because they have 1 Q3 win and losses to #5, #6, and #55. That covers up for their 1 Q3 loss and 1 Q4 loss (Akron does not have a Q4 loss).

I don't know what Kent will be come March, but right now, they do completely suck statistically. In their 18 pt win vs. NIU (thank goodness NIU is leaving the MAC), Kent shot 17% from 3 and 53% from the line. They played bully-ball and ultimately overpowered the Huskies, but it was not an impressive performance. NIU shot an abysmal 30% from the field, including 25% from 3 and 46% from the line. Kent had more turnovers (15 to 11) but 19 more rebounds (51 to 32). If Kent wasn't playing against the MAC's version of the Washington Generals, they would've lost that game. Their best player is out for the year, I believe they have another key contributor out for the year, and their top local recruit is basically MIA and potentially quit basketball.

Where do you get this information?

Thanks for the website link ... Noticed in the 12-team league 8 teams are trending down. Only two teams trending up are Ball State and Eastern Michigan.

Interesting.

Also noted all top 4 teams in the MAC are loaded with Q4 wins. Doesn't say much for the league. CMU has 2 Q2 wins, both non-con. Ball State has 1 vs. Kent.

Is NIU basketball leaving the MAC?

Yes, no way the MAC would allow them to remove their football program, but leave their other sports. Especially since their basketball team is consistently in the bottom 1/3 of the MAC

In Kent's 19 pt win at Buffalo last night, they shot 16% from 3 (4-25). This brings their season 3P% down to 25.3%, good for 361st out of 364 teams. The hilarious part is the 3 teams who are worse than them percentage wise, also rank towards the bottom in 3PA per game. Kent's ranking for 3PA per game? 96th. At least the other teams know they suck; Kent is delusional.

They are an all-time bad shooting team.

He was not a successful HC at Xavier.  Never had a winning conference record...and was fired.

This isn't entirely fair. He was a 19-win coach 3/4 years at Xavier and was just under .500 in the Big East. 4 years of being stagnant doesn't get you a 5th year at Xavier, especially after the success Chris Mack had for 9-10 years.

Was Steele successful by Xavier's standards? Nope. But he wasn't an utter failure either.

Miami OH has the horses in the barn to compete with anyone this year, assuming their shot is on. I do question their depth and versatility though.

I question Miami's ceiling under Steele. This isn't the same Charlie Cole Miami. Hockey is arguably the #1 winter sport for the Redhawks (well at least it was pre-covid. It looks like the program has since gone to crap) and its not exactly cheap to run. All these MAC schools have a finite amount of resources and the more they spend on sports like football or hockey, the less they have for basketball.

Once Xavier knew they had a window to get Sean Miller back it wouldn’t have mattered what Steele did short of making the Final Four. Steele is solid and I believe he will have Miami contending from here on out.

Totally forgot about the Sean Miller part of the equation. Great point, ZipsBBjunkie.
