1981 grad Posted yesterday at 01:13 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 01:13 AM I am trying to figure out why we are getting outrebounded and it seems to me Lyles is very slow to the ball on the rebounds. He is playing defense and when the ball goes up he just does not get into a good position to get the ball. That is what made Freeman so good. Quick to the ball. It looks so ugly when we cannot grab a rebound.

1981 grad Posted yesterday at 01:19 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 01:19 AM Okonkwa had a nice rebound and fed the ball out for a 3 by Tavari. WE need to show some toughness on the boards. Keep Lyle sitting and keep Okonkwa on the floor.
Zippy87 Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 01:37 AM We may just not be very good. We've struggled some years to win against better opponents, but with the exception of Arkansas State, we don't even look like we belong with most of them so far this year. Frustrating team to watch.
csims0917 Posted yesterday at 01:49 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 01:49 AM Not a fan of the style we decided to try this year. Feels completely against what we’ve been doing for my time at Akron. I get the personnel is different but the change is extreme

He's too good of a coach to fall into that trap again. Win with your kind of guys; over-achievers, under-sized gym rats and so forth. Just my opinion. Also ... not middle of the road MAC team ... perhaps most years, but not this year. 2024-25 MAC Basketball sucks. Bad as it looks, Akron still one of the top teams in the MAC. By far. Illini Zip Posted yesterday at 02:16 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 02:16 AM Townsend gave us the "Enrique Freeman" treatment. That was hard to watch.
1981 grad Posted yesterday at 02:33 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 02:33 AM We just get destroyed in the low post tonight. Even when they missed they just got the rebound and put it back in. We have no strength inside. This board indicated that we needed another big on the team. And we were right. Lyles and Okonkwa are just not big enough or strong enough to rebound and then we are undersized at every other position when we face a team that has some talent. Groce need to tell his team that if you are not going to rebound, I will find someone that can.

He is far from an issue IMO. He did make a nice block. But he also needs to rebound. He played 26 minutes tonight and not one rebound. He leads the Zips in "not rebounding" averaging less than one rebound a game.

Every team's post player has given us the Enrique treatment. 1) That's why Enrique's jersey is going in the rafters instantly. 2) It's a testament to how weak this team is (right now).

Yeah, tbh I expected more out of Okonkwo. I didn't think he'd contribute much offensively, but the highlights that I saw gave me the impression that he would be a force defensively and eat up boards. I guess that's why they call them highlights though. They typically only illustrate the good. Please don't think I'm placing all the blame on Okonkwo. I just thought he would be a big enough defensive presence that he could make up for shortcomings elsewhere. That doesn't appear to be the case so we'll just need more from everyone else. Hopefully Groce can find a solution.
clarkwgriswold Posted yesterday at 12:46 PM Author Report Share Posted yesterday at 12:46 PM This team needs to get off to better starts at the beginning of halves. All you can do when you are that short on bigs is to try to rebound as a team and they're not doing it. Harris might help some but this team's composition may result in us suffering through this all year. With the exception of a couple of guys, this crew doesn't seem to have the grit and physicality of most Groce teams. Milwaukee and Yale are quality teams. Yale has finished in the top 2 of the Ivy League for 6 straight years and won a tournament game last year. That being said, the Zips shouldn't get manhandled by them as they were for much of the game.

clarkwgriswold Posted yesterday at 03:13 PM Author Report Share Posted yesterday at 03:13 PM The Zips get the 0-11 Tigers of Jackson State in the consolation game today. If you get a chance, take a look at their schedule today. It's a real doozy, with Houston, Louisville, Iowa State, Vandy, Xavier and Kentucky. They lost by 2 to common opponent Arkansas State. I expect a Zips win but it won't be the blowout one would expect playing a winless team.

The way we’ve looked thus far in 2024-5, who’s expect us to blow out any D1 program. We aren’t making shots, can’t rebound and give up a ton of points. Bud Wenz is not getting much bang for his buck.

Reslife4Life Posted yesterday at 04:31 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 04:31 PM Again this schedule layout is bad, we are now playing 2 games in 13 days. With one being at princeton, we need to win and have some positives to build on in today's game.
