  2. I always thought two things were going to ruin college sports for me. Gambling and paying the players directly. Not that I don't think that they have a right to get a gain out of what they're producing, but just flat buying teams doesn't get me excited for college sports any more. I will even admit I'm a little less excited for Akron season knowing that they have kind of bought their team as well. It's why soccer is my favorite sport at Akron and not just because they're good, but because I believe that it's about talent, evaluation and skill and not just money. Yes, I know that you still have to have some talent evaluation even with the money but the playing field is not even.
  3. I think they'll settle into the 5-6 seed but then get eliminated on the first day in Cleveland. So, a pretty normal season for them. I do think they're better than recent years but the league is a little deeper this year so the result may end up looking the same as usual.
  4. Buffalo was mentioned as well so 1/3 of the schools that played MAC basketball last season. That must explain why the conference was so down /s. Edit: More now that I think about it because EMU if I recall was being investigated before. Maybe another school as well.
  5. And I'd really like for this not to happen because if it does, there's a good possibility that Akron becomes the odd man out since they're only an associate member in soccer. If both schools join then maybe they'd be safe.
  6. I mean Simpson just left school 1 year early to go pro and will likely make $20+ million because of it. Nate didn't have that option. The reality is both left for money. One for the pros and another to a different school.
  7. College basketball point shaving scandal ensnares 17 schools. Three of them are MAC schools, Western Michigan and shockingly, Ohio and Kent.
  8. Today
  9. You are right that we don't need to pay two coaches. Our reality is that this program is in the dumper. I can tolerate losing if they are playing good basketball, but perhaps facing better talent. The talent will come if they play good fundamental bball. That is not the case. They are so difficult to watch. It's painful. Gensler is by all accounts a very good guy, but in athletics you are judged on performance and that is not there.
  10. One more season after this one and there's no way the school is going to expend the money to pay 2 women's hoops coaches.
  11. I don't know, but it's time to move on.
  12. He's right that those schools do fit the profile well. Given the state of politics, I think Senators should focus on things other than the athletic alignment of their alma maters. I'm sure if there was mutual interest, these schools would have already joined the Big East.
  13. Any idea when Gensler's contract runs through? He was a Guthrie hire, so Goodrich may be OK moving on soon if the program keeps moving in the wrong direction.
  14. The comparison is that players in these situations can transfer and get a lot of money somewhere else, but then they lose out on their legacy at their previous school. Nate is getting life-changing money at Kansas State, but loses out on a legacy at Akron that may have ended with a jersey retirement one day and a chance to lead his team to a 3rd straight MAC Championship.
  15. I assume that if this happens, that soccer would be included (article only mentions basketball) IMHO, this would make the Big East a stronger league for soccer https://www.cleveland.com/news/2026/01/sen-jon-husted-pushes-big-east-to-admit-university-of-dayton.html WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, a Columbus-area Republican, is making a pitch to move his alma mater into one of college basketball’s premier conferences. Husted joined Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt on Wednesday in sending a letter to Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman urging the conference to admit the University of Dayton and Saint Louis University, citing the schools’ alignment with the Big East’s mission and their strong basketball programs.
  16. I hate to lose this young man, but I am not as concerned as others. I question whether he had the speed to play today's LB position. We are losing players and it is saddening. Still we aren't alone. Toledo is headed for a major rebuild. Recently I touched base with an operations staff member formerly at UT. Candle asked him to join him at UConn. The pay raise was nearly double. Anyway he told me Candle has taken 22 UT players with him. Obviously Candle would not take any player that couldn't help, so these 22 were scholarship players who were expected to start or get significant PT at UT. Candle is following the plan that Cignetti executed at IU: take the best players, who you know, and build around them. Despite all this I expect UT to be good. They have a great MAC brand in football.
  17. Iona lost to Rider, which entered the night at 1-14. I'm not sure if Iona is battling injuries or what, but they have been nosediving the past couple of weeks.
  18. They were also projected to finish 7th in the MAC preseason rankings so it's not like they were all that hyped in the first place. When it's all said and done I expect them to have a top 4-5 seed.
  19. I realize they have a history of not living up to expectations but I think they will be decent this year. The MAC schedule maker has done them no favors as they've started the season against OU, Miami, UMASS, PCCC and Akron. When it all settles out I think they'll be in Cleveland and could cause some trouble for some teams.
  20. Seemingly, a nobrainer.
  21. Yesterday
  22. The big difference here is that Simpson is going to get life changing money. If he's picked around the middle of the first round he'll come away with $20 million guaranteed. If he slides into the top 10 that number could climb closer to $30 million. For that reason I don't find the situation all that comparable.
  23. I have no ill feelings toward Nate going after life-changing money at K State, but I couldn't help but think of him when I read this quote today.
  24. I think only 8 signed. I believe Christian Young ended up going to Southern Miss.
  25. I guess he saw the writing on the wall after Tomlin resigned.
  26. In my opinion, the only team undefeated at the end wears black and white stripes.
  27. I could see them losing at Kent, at Marshall, at Ohio, or vs Toledo. Not all four but at least 1-2 of them.
