Real team effort tonight. For those that didn't get to see it you can get an idea how many played well by how many different names were brought up in these posts. I would add Portman to that list. He seemed to be everywhere in that last 25-30 min. when you could see the legs getting heavy.5 points

Tremendous effort for 110 minutes. This team has so much to be proud of. I am very glad that they have a week off before their next match. Clapier and Pacheco really battled defensively...as well as on the offensive side of the pitch. I still have no idea...how UNC let Malik Henry go. I love all the skills that he brings to the zips. Coming into the game, WVU was 21 in RPI and Akron was 35 After the tie, WVU is 22 and Akron rises to 25. This could have been the zips best game of the year from their midfield players. Kingsford, Kauzlaric, Fitzgerald and Samu.......all had some outstanding moments....and zips were very competitive on 50/50 balls4 points

A rivalry is renewed as the 0-4 Ohio Bobcats come to town for Homecoming weekend, fresh off of a 35-6 loss @ Northwestern in which a 55-yard TD run by Ohio's Armani Rogers as the clock expired kept them from being shut out. A familiar name leads the Kitten offensive attack, as former Bobcat QB terror Nathan Rourke's younger brother Kurtis now has the reigns. He leads an offense that puts up just under 14 points per game while the defense has surrenders around 35 a game. They opened the year with a very disappointing 29-9 loss at home to Syracuse, followed by a Gardner-Webbian catastrophic loss to the mighty Duquesne Dukes (not basketball) by a 28-26 final. Former Zip punter Jonah Wieland has been dynamite for the Bobcats. Nobody will ever forget the 37-34 triumph over Ohio in November of 2017. That's Akron's only win over the Bobcats since 2007, which is still mind blowing. Do yourself a favor and do NOT look at the box score from this game in 2019. I care about you, don't do it. The Zips open as 9-point home underdogs. I was quite surprised. That's a lot of points. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see Akron lose 35-10. Hope for the best.....GO ZIPS!1 point

Scroll up a bit to the post that with a pic featuring 'Season tickets on sale now' and includes a men's and women's player. Women's in white and I'm assuming the men's jerseys will be similar?1 point

I think this will prove to be spot-freaking-on. The depth on this team is pretty incredible, considering the state of the program when Groce took over. Being able to bring Wynn, Tribble, Clarke, and Bandaogo off the bench is massive - that's two guards and a winger with solid size and experience. I think Castaneda will be the key to the team's success this year. We needed someone to replace LCJ as the floor general, and from what I've seen out of Castaneda, he's the perfect guy to do it. Biggest questions for me... 1) Does Freeman replicate last year's unbelievable individual production? 2) Do we get much-needed outside scoring from either of the incoming freshman guards - Johnson and/or Mitchell? 3) What seed will we be in the NCAA Tournament?1 point

Just an update. Kostelac vs. U of A in the Ohio Court of Claims concluded in July with the University being awarded summary judgment on Kostelac's claims. Essentially, the Court found that the University did not breach its duty of reasonable care to protect Kostelac from an unreasonable risk of physical harm of which it knew or had reason to know, because Gueye's criminal act of assaulting Kostelac was unforeseeable.1 point

Assuming players maintain their starting spots, Ali, Freeman and Trimble would appear to have starting spots locked up. That leaves point guard (Castaneda, Clarke, Tribble) and wing (Dawson, Wynn, Walton) to vie for spots. Hilltopper's take with Castaneda and Walton makes sense. We have however seen that Groce will go with the 5 he thinks play the best together as a unit as opposed to the most talented 5, so we'll see. It's going to be a lot of fun seeing who has the hot hand(s) on any given night. I think the role of the freshmen this year will be to take over the seats at the end of the bench previously occupied by guys like Scotty Walter and Marquelle McIntyre.1 point

I would a thought the same thing.1 point

Put it this way I believe Youngstown State would a drew more fans filling our stadium if that game was played. I believe we would a lost too.1 point

Hindsight is 20/20, but it was a mistake leaving Irons in the game vs OSU as long as we did. He was getting hit on damn near every drop back. If he did suffer a concussion, as some are saying, it's not really a surprise.1 point

Do you think a nationally competitive FCS team would draw more than a bad or average FBS team? I'm not sure the "Joe Akron" fans we're seeking would know the difference.1 point

By the way, with all the yellow cards given out last night, it's worth noting through 10 games, no Zip has more than 2. Hopefully, that rate doesn't increase so that no one gets into peril of sitting out a game, but I know MAC games can get chippy like last night. GO ZIPS!!!1 point

Strachan and Meyer were fantastic. Nine yellow cards in the match though 4 for Akron 5 for West Virginia.1 point

I like this. A lot. I'm hoping and expecting for a much more balanced offensive attack, and Castaneda and Walton's additions to the starting lineup should provide that. I also echo the optimism on depth. Once Wynn got his feet wet, he was a big contributor. And as I've said before, Dawson has an amazing physique and he can do a bit of everything. In this program, the sky is the limit for what he can do. I'm curious to see what roles the freshmen fill on this team. And I'm really excited to see what Aziz looks like. Can't wait!!!1 point

I think these games do, indeed, have a measurable impact and that impact is almost entirely in the negative. If it was positive, athletic directors, who are little more than snake oil salesmen, would not describe them as being "good for exposure". The snake oil salesmen sells snake oil as the cure for your ailments knowing the snake oil will only make you sicker. Since your condition is worse, they then are able to sell even more snake oil for your problems. This is how the Tennessee game came to be. There is nothing about that game that benefits the players, students, alumni, fans and greater Akron community. It almost exclusively benefits the athletic director's career and Tennessee. See how G5 ADs do not act in the best interest of the institutions they work for? Bet everything you have that the Tennessee game will not result in a rapid influx of students from Tennessee.1 point

I just get general admission tickets, but you can always sit right on the 50-yard line in the upper deck on the visitor’s side. The seats are pretty awesome.1 point

Irons being out would certainly be unexpected as there was nothing that indicated he was hurt and I had zero issues with our WRs during the OSU game. Really don't have an issue with the playcalling either.......Tough to do much when you are overmatched in terms of size and talent at every position. My issue is the defense in general. That unit is a sieve. If we have a slew out guys out, its no wonder OU is a favorite. We aren't that talented nor experienced, we can't afford to be missing many starters.1 point

I was on the road in the Spring when we picked up Xavier Castaneda so I missed much of the conversation. I just watched his final game as a USF Bull and honestly he strikes me more like a shorter Channel Banks than a pure point guard. And even though I didn't read the mentioned Beacon Journal article (behind a paywall), this post really got me thinking. It will be very interesting to see who emerges as our lead guard this year, if anyone. I could see multiple PGs playing together and roles evolving throughout the season. Maybe PG by committee. Regardless, the LCJ days are sadly over and we are going to experience a much different flow to our offense. If you can stomach commentator, Dan Dakich you might want to watch some of this game. Xavier Castaneda is #1 in green. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rb_D_MxQVU1 point

Kicking off both halves and running around with a clipboard jammed down the front of your pants should automatically qualify you for this list.1 point

Unfortunately, 4 teams ahead of them are high school teams.1 point

I understand we lost our star PG but outside of OSU, that's an AWFUL schedule. Same as any other year: win the MAC Tournament.1 point

Maybe they're waiting to see if he's even the worst coach in Akron history...0 points
