  2. Good call on Trimble. The entire team has a defensive intensity we haven't seen before. We've had individual strong defenders like Banks and Tribble but this team is far more solid from a team defense perspective and its fun to see. The depth will also help keep that intensity up through an entire game. We can expect to see a lot more full court pressure and trapping in the half court.

  3. Northern Illinois, who hired their head coach at the same time as Akron and had a worse record than Akron last year, is 7-3 (5-1 MAC) after defeating Ball State. They’re in the driver’s seat for the West and control their own destiny. They have 80+ freshman. Arth was 3-24. Wonder how many local media folks will talk about this? Just ask Dustin Fox, he thinks Arth was just turning the corner. Loser.

  4. This is proof that the so-called cost of athletics for UA is a total farce. Nothing more than clever accounting and a shell game. The actual costs of athletics is much less than what appears on the balance sheet.

  8. today is a big day....for conference tournament action Geoergetown has started the day by reclaiming 3rd in RPI with a 1-0 win over Villanova in a Big East Semi Villanova ends the year with an 11-7-1 record...and despite the loss...they stay at 26 in RPI In my long writeup above, I was wrong about Butler having ended its year in the 2nd big east semi at 1:30.....#38 Butler (7-8-3) faces #19 Providence 9-3-4 if Butler were to somehow beat both Providence and Georgetown, they would reduce the number of available at large spots...as Georgetown and Providence will both still get in 4 pm matches Cleveland State #114 vs. Milwaukee in Horizon league semi....we always want Akron opponents to win 16 West Virginia vs. 57 Georgia State I still think that Akron should want West Virginia to win the league. If Georgia State or Bowling Green win the league, I think that Akron's at large status could be very risky. another 4 pm match...this one regular season #32 Stanford 6-6-5....2-4-3 in Pac-12 vs. 82 California 3-9-2 ...1-6-0 a loss would drop Stanford below .500 and make them ineligible for NCAA despite having a very mediocre year, I think that the power 5 loving NCAA committee will take Stanford with a 7-6-5 record 4:30....Colonial athletic semi #10 Hofstra vs. #91 Drexel......let's go Hofstra 7 pm.....#37 Northern Illinois vs. #43 Bowling Green...win that one, NIU 7:30 pm....2nd Colonial athletic semi...#58 Elon vs. #33 Northeastern 9 pm ...regular season matchup to determine NCAA top seed...washington vs. Oregon state #8 Tulsa vs. #45 SMU (8-4-3) in an american athletic semi...was supposed to be played last night bad weather caused the game to be moved to 4:30 today winner plays #56 UCF in final...UCF defeated Memphis 6-0 yesterday in semi Akron fans should root for Tulsa to win the conference so the AAC only gets one team in tourney

  9. I think you misinterpreted the post. He's saying it was stupid to put Irons in the game when Gibson was rolling. Inserting Irons is like tossing water on the campfire, and our staff has done it two consecutive games. Irons showed some high level FBS ability earlier in the season. Auburn and Ohio State fans would attest to it. I would too. 😁 I've watched a lot of football, and I've only seen this bizarre QB swap done one other time...when Butchie Washington was having a great first quarter against Penn State, and Lee Owens yanked him in favor of Greg Gromeck. I recall Gromeck threw two quick pick 6's, and a tight game quickly flipped to a blowout. Gibson has improved quite a bit over his 3 Freshman seasons at UA. He definitely gives the Zips the best chance to win football games. End zone fumble aside, he values ball security way more than Irons. Good leadership, pocket presence, poise, accuracy and good arm strength. What's not to like? But if Gibson elected to transfer at season's end (hope he doesn't), and a good OC and QB coach had the offseason to work with Irons, and we plucked 4 mature OL's out of the transfer portal, I think we'd be in good shape with Irons at QB in 2022.

  10. I like Ali's developing game but at the same time I would prefer that he avoid the crazy all over the floor dribbling display a couple of possessions before he hit the 3. That possession and the possession where Freeman got stuck with the ball were painful at an important point in the game.

  11. People are talking about Trimble defensive improvement, but what about Ali on the offensive end? I remember when he started as a freshmen he was almost afraid to put up a shot. Now he might end up being our #2 or #3 scoring option.

  12. When he transferred, KD and Groce were both fully expecting him to come to Akron. Then one day, everyone got the notification that he committed to Kent and it shocked both UA and Doo-Cane. The kid can play, but he is a bit of a wild card. I wish we got him, but I like our personnel plenty good.

  15. I apologize in advance if this has already been said, and if it has, consider this an emphasis. How important was that WVU exhibition game? This team really busted their asses to iron out the kinks we saw in that exhibition. And what a game plan from Groce to be aggressive and consistently go inside. If we play like this the majority of the year, look out MAC & NCAA.

  17. And in the other ACC semi, Clemson totally dominates Duke, outshooting them 27-4 (!) , 6-1 SOG, 10-3 corners ... and loses 0-1. My theory is that the reason that soccer is so popluar in the third world is that it illustrates the fundamental unfairness of life. Duke moving up to #3 in RPI drops Pitt down to #5.

  19. Good. Enjoy the bench. I love the heart and hustle we showed on defense last night. Bryan Trimble looks like he’s REALLY improved his defensive intensity. Love to see it!

  21. Can't let this post go unchecked. WMU arguably has the best defensive line in the MAC. Fayad (#1) and Holley (#8) are 1st and 3rd, respectively in the MAC in sacks, both are seniors, and both will be playing on Sunday next year. Of course, WMU thought they could get pressure against our all freshman front but those boys played one hell of a game only allowing 1.5 sacks between those two monsters. I am not blaming Gibson for anything but those 20 pressures you mentioned and blamed on the OL is not a fair assessment. Those pressures could have been easily cut in half if Gibson would have just got rid of the ball quicker or ran when the pass option was not available. Do not get me wrong, the OL is not perfect but those dudes are coming together and getting better every game. I've also noticed that the OL is often left on an island with very little support from TE's or RB's. Not only do the players need to adjust to the flow of the game, but so do the coaches by calling plays that are condusive to the QB getting the ball out quicker or by keeping other players in to help block. Plays like screens and changing the snap count can help keep the opposition off balance and slow down the rush. This approach would also help with our rush attack. As we all know, football is the ultimate team sport and you can't just solely blame one positional unit for anything on offense or defense since often times there are multiple factors involved.

  22. Easily should have been picked. 1st of all the safety jumps to early and secondly never should have cut under the route. Bad technique all around.

  23. And Pitt, desptie the loss, remains at #4 with both the #1 SOS and the #1 OSS. Zips in very good shape for an at-large bid.

  24. What the players need right now is HOPE. They have lost two brutally close games and their head coach in the course of two weeks. They play their hearts out and nothing good (such as a win) is coming from it. It will take unfathomable inspirational skills to come in get these kids excited about the future. It's going to take a very special person.

  25. Unfortunately, Notre Dame just scored twice within 14 seconds and they lead Pitt 2-0 at 79 minutes Pitt has had the majority of possession. At one point, Pitt lead 14 to 1 in corner kicks

  27. Three Money Games per year Pluto is a moron "They're looking at hiring a couple of fundraisers. They're looking at playing three money games a year." Akron currently plays two such games against powerhouses for a big payout, but next season will play three. They'll face Michigan State, Tennessee and Liberty. Liberty is a pay day game??? Not.

  28. And AJ Milwee got hired at Alabama and Texas after he was the worst offensive coordinator that Akron has ever had. Those moves don't suggest anything to me that any of them are worth a damn. If you ever talk to people in the game, you know that people who suck get hired all of the time because they either lie or kiss the you know what of who's looking to get a new guy. Scott Aligo has had a different job nearly every year for the last 8-9 years. I think he was a scout for the Browns a couple of years before they wound up going 0-16. Oh, and he's a massive D-bag. John Cooley, who Akron stole from the mighty 2-10 Kent State Golden Flashes, was hired by his buddy Staley. Wonder where I've heard of Staley wanting an incompetent Akron coach he's buddies with before? Jayden Everett came to Akron after coaching RBs for 1-11 CMU. Now he's with Tulsa who sucks. Felton was fresh out of high school coaching when Arth gave him a raise from his coffee-go-getter job at Tennessee, who also sucked. A majority of these clowns share the same resume as Arth. Where'd they start and get their most success? John Carroll. And they're riding those relationships as far as they can go. They went 0-12 playing in the worst division top to bottom in the FBS, and 11 of the games were utter embarrassments. I don't want to hear about how wonderful that staff was.

  29. Come on. This staff had coaches leave for better programs/promotions to Tulsa, Buffalo,Troy, South Alabama, the LA Rams, the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers, and Michigan State. Clearly all of these programs and franchises didn’t see them as a joke or underqualified.

  30. I appreciate your insight. I just feel like that proverbial ā€œturning the cornerā€ was almost upon us. You are right that he had to know his recruiting and roster composition methods may be more of an old fashioned (if 8-10 years ago can be called that) approach but I think that is also the way you build longer term success as opposed to one or two good seasons before dropping off the map again. Being that every opponent is older and more experienced I think right about now is when the improvement would start to be expected. Looking at the last couple weeks I think we have started to see that. I think it was finally just starting to build in the direction they wanted. To me now does not seem like the time to pull the rug out from under the program and start over. I know it’s hard to get past the 3-24 and I would have been for the move if that was the record after three years of rosters with his guys that were as experienced as the opponents we were playing. I just thought this program was building to be a top of the MAC team two years from now but was taking its lumps now was part of the learning needed to get there

  31. After the last two games against two very solid MAC teams, I am thinking that letting Arth go may have been a mistake. Every week, the Zips play with the most freshman of any team. They are starting to come around and Arth's vision of a long range rebuild is coming to fruition. They found the QB Gibson (it took Arth much longer than it should have). The RB's are beginning to play well. The OL is coming together when Gray is not playing. They have a couple of very good WR's. On defense, the Line is awful and needs help from the transfer portal (I posted on this in the past), I am thinking of 3 transfers while the youth develop. They need to go to a 4 man front since their 3 is not successful. When Bubba gets back, he and Boateng will make a great pairing at LB. The DB's are young, but are improving. Get a couple from the transfer portal to help next year. The DL made a couple of big plays, like the pick 6. However, they got run over for over 300 yards which is unheard of, and it should have been more. They are awful. I am curious to see how the Zips play to finish the season. If they are competitive, they are setting the stage for the future. I hope Guthrie makes the right choice and the key players stay around. Otherwise, there will be many more bad seasons and the attendance at the stadium will drop to nothing. Go Zips!
