With as few big DL we have had the past couple years maybe the 2-4-5 would work but hoping we can get in some DL who can play soon!3 points

Could someone please send directions to Akron for all of these players signing on to the team with no contact information for the coaches?3 points

Good call. Also, with the transfer portal and the extra year of eligibility for many players created by the NCAA in response the Covid, HS players are getting pushed down in farther in the process as there's less and less roster room. In addition, teams on the level UA recruits often have to wait for the recruiting processes of the "better" programs to flush out as kids UA may be chasing are waiting to see what may open at a P5 of more prestigious G5 when offers are accepted or rejected by higher level recruits. Best Regards, Jack Wagon2 points

I wouldn’t put much into the defensive numbers. That defense will be a 4 man front with 2 linebackers. There is one safety slash linebacker that can be flexible or like you hear in lower levels a monster back if needed in the box or a DB if needed in a nickel package. So it can be just about any defense depending on the package that is needed but it does need a couple good DT’s to give you the flexibility it needs2 points

I think you just ruined any chance of Clark "Jack Wagon" Griswold taking over the presidency of the John Ward fan club.2 points

Daniel Strachan should have been included on the All MAC teams very glad to see that Daniel was voted All-Ohio https://gozips.com/news/2021/12/20/mens-soccer-seven-zips-garner-all-ohio-mens-soccer-honors.aspx2 points

It also looks like we have a marketing team in place now. That is the first official media graphic we’ve released. Good to see2 points

A free game that was highly entertaining. We should have Duquesne on our non conference schedule every year. An easy drive to attend. Competitive game. Or give us Clarion, directional Alabama, or one of the Carolina A & Ts 🙄2 points

Looks like we chasing some serious talent now. Get some big DL and some guys that can cover and we half way there.1 point

Get the best ready to play right now players via portal, Juco or high school. Win now & you can get better quality high school players for the future with a few needed parts out of portal Juco to sustain success1 point

Yes, that CB we got from WVU is a prime example. He played a decent amount as a true freshman, but didn't see the field much the past 2 years. He comes to Akron and we get 2 years of eligibility out of him. I'm assuming he'll start both years. Tying up scholarships on redshirts doesn't make as much sense now that you can bring in transfers that can play day 1.1 point

I've started to have a sneaking feeling that "John Ward" is a different screen name for "DRE22"1 point

This years already pretty picked over at the high school level and Akron needs players that can help them immediately. I'd expect 80% of this years recruits to be transfers and juco players.1 point

Humor me please. How do JUCO and transfer players get contact info but not HS players?1 point

How about give you directions outta town. And if you notice all these signees is JUCO and transfer’s. None is HIgh School boys. Thats who I was referring to Jack Wagon.1 point

I heard there is an offensive coordinator at Oregon who has ties to Akron who might be interested in the job. Wait, what?1 point

The probably are right now. If G5 schools had their own division and played for a national championship, WKU would be a favorite to win it for the near future after some of the G5 teams depart to the Big 12. If I was to rewrite your quote above it would say, "Western Kentucky was too good for the MAC and they probably know it.". My biggest concern with allowing WKU into the MAC was not how good they are now or how good they might be in the future, but their joining the MAC as a temporary stopping point until they found somewhere else they wanted to be. We allowed that to happen with Marshall and others in the past. It makes the MAC look desperate and simply doesn't make good business sense. The MAC is a good, stable mid-west conference. Some of these G5 conferences look like a bunch of fly by night organizations that don't provide a sense of history or regionality that I think is still important.1 point

Nearly 2/3 of all FBS teams go to bowls. Making a bowl game isn't really an accomplishment anymore. They hand bowl bids out like participation trophies.1 point

Absolutely not. I am calling him (along with Mathison and Qualls) a good player, and that may be shorting him. I think they are very good players. My point is that there are a lot of players on the roster that do not deserve to be D1 and if they would leave, we would never miss them. Please re-read my post. I did not call Mumpfield a straggler. A MAC transfer isn't going to move the needle for a 3-9 school trying to get into a better position than barely edging out Duke for second to last place in the ACC Coastal.1 point

Bowl season over the last 6 years or so always does a nice job of showing the country what the conference is really made of. The MAC has seriously fallen off, and deserves all of the criticism it gets for being a crappy conference. Believe me, I still love watching it and it’s generally fun football, but when the MAC East comes down to two 6-5 teams the the west champ goes 0-6 the year before, as fun as those things are, they tell me there’s a lot of parity and parity that isn’t very good. Toledo pays Candle over $1 million a year, WMU pays Lester like $850k and both have been incredible disappointments based on recruiting outside of Toledo’s title in 2017 where UA didn’t even belong in the same stadium as that team. With that said, it’s a perfect opportunity for Moorhead to strike while the iron is hot and really do something to make moves in this league. It can be done.1 point

Per his UCF bio... Prior to his single season in Colorado Springs, Toth spent five years at Fresno State, the first four as defensive coordinator while also coaching inside linebackers. His defense earned 17 All-Mountain West selections and one 2012 unanimous All-American in safety Phillip Thomas. Thomas was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, won the CFPA Defensive Back Trophy and was the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year after leading the nation with eight interceptions. After having only nine turnovers gained in 2011, the year before Toth’s hiring, Fresno State came back in 2012 and recorded the greatest turnover turnaround in the Football Bowl Subdivision since the turn of the century. Finishing with 35 takeaways in 2012 (ranking fifth in the FBS), the Bulldogs’ differential in turnovers gained in one season under Toth was plus-26. His 2013 defense ranked sixth in the FBS with more than three sacks per game and 40 for the season and also ranked fourth with 8.2 tackles for loss per game. Over the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Fresno State and Stanford were the only schools in the country that ranked in the top 10 in sacks both years. WOW. Toth joined Oregon's staff to reunite with their DC, Tim DeRuyter. Could be this be what the defense looks like? DeRuyter’s 2-4-5 defense emphasizes using defensive ends and outside linebackers in more of a hybrid role.1 point

The MAC is looking like an absolute powerhouse this year. 1. Ohio 2. Toledo 3. Akron 4. Everyone else. 5. Central Michigan. Edit: This is 100% sarcasm, @NWAkron. The MAC sucks aside from potentially OU, Toledo, and Akron.0 points

^^Perusing twitter (FWIW) some WVU fans thought he was a "distraction," and are not upset with his departure. If there's any truth to that, hopefully he matures. Anyway, we needed help at DB.0 points

Fascinating no one mentioned one of the more ironic facts of the game: The Anteaters' coach, Russell Turner came closer than anyone to being full-time coach of the D-1 school in Akron. Multiple reports stated he was offered and turned down the Akron job before it was offered to John Groce. He's one of the top young coaches on the West coast and his team was coming off having led #10 USC by double digits before finally losing by 5. They own wins over excellent teams Santa Clara and Boise State, so I must say: Nice win Duqies!!0 points
