  1. I'd probably be excited to look at the AAC or something similar if we were dominating the MAC year-in and year-out - until then, we have no right or realistic expectations to think anyone would even want us, let alone that we'd deserve it. Could hoops hang in the AAC and possibly elevate their stature? Sure.. Football would be (even more of) an embarrassment. The MAC is fine for us

  2. way too early....to start thinking about that.... Zips need to focus on their next game.... Northern Illinois field is a cow pasture....with very high winds all of the time... Northern played 11 men back at home against a good Western Michigan team and got a 0-0 result. Northern Illinois will play 11 men back and try to use the high winds to their advantage one game at a time for the zips

  3. I am changing my tune from past posts and I believe that the Zips will beat Miami-Oh this Saturday. After studying the teams, I think that the WR's and TE's for Akron will be the key to the game and make Irons look good again. I believe Akron's offense will overcome Miami's Defense and Miami will not have enough offense to overcome Akron. Changing my comments and plan on attending again this Saturday. Looking forward to another tail gate. I cannot stay away from my beloved alma mater. Go Zips!!!

  4. It is a nice touch, the old bulbs had many burned out and they had some kind of rusty gunk gathered in the bottom. A very rustic look indeed, it was time for a little face-lift. Inside, allllllllll of the old banners are gone, with some newer ones finally rolling in. It looks like a bit of a mess with the faded carpet walls, but I’m hoping it comes together and think it will look nice once it does. Zips volleyball is home Friday and Saturday if you want to stop in and see the new look, court, etc. Guthrie has a vision, finally beginning to play out so far beyond the hiring of Moorhead, etc. The new branding and his philosophy on what he wants the place to look like will be quite different from what we’re used to. He’s a bit much for some people and I don’t agree with every thing he does and says, but it’s a nice breath of fresh air to have an AD being proactive and trying to change things that haven’t been working. No matter what happens on the field or in the court, it’s awesome to have a guy in charge that’s involved and wants everything to be better.

  5. Count in me in as being a big fan of the MAC as well. Just wish the conference collectively would elevate in football and basketball. Money is obviously a large part of that and a lot of the conference members having enrollment decline doesn’t help. Additionally, I think I read somewhere the B1G’s new TV deal is paying $70mm per team, while I think we are getting something like $500k per team. We need to renegotiate that to at least a few mil a team. Don’t see any reason we shouldn’t be able to do that. I would’ve really liked to have us add any combination of JMU/Marshall/WKU/MTSU.

  6. I'm content in the MAC. Heck, I'll even say I like it. We've got a small handful of authentic rivalries which I look forward to every season: KSUcks, Ohio, and Buffalo in football; add Toledo in basketball. Having 3-4 true rivals is pretty cool.

  7. That goal against Michigan by Perry was unbelievable. Going down 1-0 early in that game was a gut punch, and to even it up prior to the half was HUGE. Side note: that year (2010), I had my cousin in the family gift exchange. He was a budding Akron fan, and enjoyed their soccer program. I ended up taking a ball to a game and someone on the team was kind enough to take the ball into the locker room and have the entire team (I believe including coaches) sign the ball. Little did anyone know that I'd be giving a signed ball by National Champions that year as a gift. Nagbe, Kitchen, Kofi, Gavin, Caldwell, Mattocks, etc. That is the college soccer equivalent of a signed football from practically any Saban-coached Alabama squad. One of the greatest teams ever to grace the sport.

  8. I know all too well. I used to write for SBNation, but I watched the teams I was writing about. After about 3 months I was given an offer by Rivals. Now I’m covering just one school while also trying to expand coverage for Akron/MAC. It’s an uphill battle because it’s all about money and subscribers. It scratches my coaching itch which my wife keeps trying to push me back into. She’ll eventually win and I’ll have to give up the writing gig.

  9. Referees aren't hired by the MAC. The same referees who work B10, Horizon, A10, MVC, etc are the same refs who work MAC. I'm pretty sure college football is the only collegiate sport where conferences have their own officials.

  10. All these years, standing there about 30 yds out in the stands I always thought that was Nagbe's head on the ball! I never read the papers or watched TV that night! Thanks to Zip_ME87 for clearing up my mind. I looked at the highlights and couldn't tell who it was... Doh! Nice play Kofie! 😂 https://www.independent.com/2010/12/11/college-cup-louisville-akron-set-sunday-final/

  11. Once UC, Houston, and UCF leave, the AAC is pretty much going to be what the C-USA was 10 years ago. I'd say it's a upgrade, but really not all that better than the MAC. I'd rather just save the millions we'd have to spend flying our non-revenue sports teams to places like Texas, Florida, Louisiana, etc and instead invest that money on better coaches and facilities.

  12. We've won 2 total MAC football games over the past 4 calendar years. We're as attractive as Rosanne Barr's puddle of barf after gagging on a dead carp. The MAC is perfect for the Zips. Any other conference has far more pitfalls than benefits.

  13. I've talked with Charles about this very issue and he is adamant that the MAC is the best place for Akron. I asked about AAC membership and he said the economics don't work for us. He feels we can achieve all we want in the MAC as college athletics stand today. I'm sure he would reevaluate if there is a seismic shift at the G5 level, but the P5 schools do not give a rat's ass about the G5 and most all changes in college athletics will be strictly to benefit the P5 schools, especially the BIG Ten and SEC. I think Guthrie wants to be a force to elevate the MAC, not leave it. My opinion of the MAC is probably closer to yours than you think. There are some schools who would response positively to an improvement process. Yet there are more that want to stay just as it is and be happy there. I hate that attitude. I believe most on the site feel the same way. We want to shoot higher. How we get there remains to be seen.

  14. I think there are three points to make regarding this post: 1. First, I check out the forums of the teams Akron football plays as well as the Browns and Indians sites, and I think that this forum is the best. Kudos to whoever owns and runs this forum. 2. I agree that the decline in participation is the result of the poor winning record of the Zips, but that may not be the only factor. 3. I also think the decline is contributed to the very poor posts on this site. I am not going to call posters out at this point who do not post facts but post BS, and I will hold that for the future. Very few people post factual comments, and the majority of the statements that receive media comments are ones that have received smart aleck comments. I think the posters need to improve their statements. Go Zips!!!

  15. I believe the editor-in-chief and perhaps another manager get something like $50 a month to write for them. There’s good ones and not so good ones. HB in particular was really really good back when midweek MACtion was at its peak about 7-8 years ago. It’s fallen off quite a bit, but I still give them clicks to show my appreciation for trying to grow coverage of the league a bit. I remember the Akron coverage during the Bowden years being pretty good, not much since then. SB Nation shut down a bunch of blogs recently as well, due to lack of engagement. HB survived, many others did not.

  16. If I get the chance to look up from keeping my head down during the walk to the JAR to block the freezing wind, I'll get to admire these lights through watering eyes. In all seriousness, that really does look nice. Looking forward to what Guthrie has in store for the interior.

  17. The writer definitely loves him some DJI. I’m guessing he hasn’t watched many of the games or he’d know DJI is responsible for a number of those sacks he seems to place on the OL. Writer also must’ve missed Amankwaa hitting the portal. Outside of that, it’s an entertaining read. Thanks for posting! On a side note, I still can’t convince Rivals to create an Akron site. I’ll ask again after the season.

  19. Do you think some donor paid off the legal system to get this guy's charges reduced/dropped for him to be 2nd team All MAC preseason? He's probably calling the commish as we speak, telling him if that poll doesn't change, he's cancelling his season tickets, and that'll leave EMU with 3 total fans.

  20. Until JoeMo gets a roster full of his guys in here and establishes chemistry and culture, we will have to play a near perfect game to have a chance at winning. That's just how it is this year.

  21. I went through the scholarship chart and counted 19 players who are not seniors that have been in the program multiple years, but aren't contributing at all, or are contributing, but clearly out of necessity as their play on the field has been subpar. Point being, there are plenty of opportunities to further filter and improve the roster next year. I have a feeling this losing is eating at Joe Mo as he's been a winner everywhere he's been and he will take full advantage of the transfer portal again for the upcoming recruiting class. In the words of @bigjim, In Joe I trust.

  25. I've been trying to dial back my excitement a little bit this week, it's about to get crazy with basketball and football overlapping and I was overwhelming myself with thoughts and research for both. It will be nice to have next Saturday off. With that said, we have an interesting matchup coming up. Miami has one of the better defenses in the league, but struggles offensively whether they have Gabbert or not. Akron, on the other hand, can move the ball, but struggles to stop the ball. An interesting thing to look at in this league, which is a hot mess of flaming garbage, is the coaches. There are very few fanbases who are happy or satisfied with their coaching situation. Miami is at the top of that list. Chuck Martin has done a great job at Miami, bringing them from the low point of Don Treadwell going 0-12 to a MAC tite 6 years later. However, he hasn't done much to build on that title. They seem to have plateau'd and are slowly trending downward, especially after a horrid loss at home to the worst WMU team in nearly 10 years, wiping out one of the nation's longest home-win streaks. They are coming into Akron licking their wounds, and perhaps with their head coach's job on the line. Forecast looks pretty good, as we've only got a few more chances to see these guys play in person. I have been thrilled with the progress I see, but must admit myself I am feeling a touch of apathy losing close so many times. I, along with many others on this board and in the fan base, see the obvious progress and improvements. But because of the losses, on the conference and national stage, it's the same ol' Akron. Damn you Larry Williams and Tom Arth. I guess we'll just have to look forward to shocking the world starting next year. I truly feel like that is coming, for the first time in a long time. The program is performing as consistently well as it has since the middle of the 2018 season, but hasn't been rewarded with the wins. They're running out of chances too. Damn, I want to break through so badly. To send Miami spiraling out of control would be a beautiful thing.

  26. Thats a bummer. As @catdaddyp said, it might be an avenue to get his final year of his MBA paid for, which is kind of how the tweet reads. Regardless, I couldn't blame him for trying to find one year of "fun" football before his career is over.

  27. Wow, how about that. I’m disappointed, but I suppose I can’t fault the guy.
