  1. Only one game into the season & we're already so cranky 🤣😭😭😭

  2. In any country outside North America they don’t have college-associated sports. Talented kids play in professional leagues. Yeah, some would come here for a free education, but it made more financial sense to stay in Germany, Israel, Serbia, etc. Now that there’s serious money being doled out by colleges you will see an onslaught of foreign kids crossing the pond to play basketball.

  3. I've said before that athletics is just a marketing arm for schools. Boise State enrollment has grown from 16k to 26k in the last 25 years, which lines up with the time that their football has become relevant. They have grown much more rapidly than other in state public Universities in Idaho. In large part because their football and basketball programs provide an improved college experience relative to their competition. Boise State is one of the few G5s that has been getting a return on their investments when it comes to what they spend on athletics. The $15 million the University spends on subsidizing athletics is a drop in the bucket compared to the revenue they're receiving from having 10k additional students paying tuition. Not to mention donations they receive by keeping their growing alumni base engaged. All of that said, Boise State is unique. They have no real in state competition. Trying to replicate what they have achieved is near impossible since everyone, including Cincinnati, lives in OSU shadows.

  5. I’m actually on the same page with most of this and have expressed similar thoughts myself. One program I think might make sense to keep at both schools however is nursing, given the existing shortages in the field. That issue is only likely to grow as the boomer generation continues to age, requiring more healthcare, while they will also be leaving the workforce. It would be more the engineering, business, liberal arts, etc that I think would make the most sense to divide. Allow each school to plow as much resources into what they're best at. This way we can offer a higher quality education in our region. There will still be plenty of competition as we will be competing with other states and private campuses.

  8. Zips have transferred in quality CBs recently. Matt Paiva makes in three good ones in a row.

  9. Past the midway point of the first half, Zips employed a good old fashioned 4-4-2. This totally took Vikings by surprise. Remi and Farrell were the two Forwards and they immediately terrorized the CSU back line. Unfortunately, Farrell soon caught a silly yellow card, and staff removed him (and this formation). I want Zips to spring this 4-4-2 formation once again. It probably should never be our base system but it can be a real shock to the opposition. We should try it again.

  11. 4-2-3-1 is our base system, and has been so throughout Embick’s tenure. Over the years, Zips increasingly switch on the fly to a more offensive 4-3-3. The ability to switch formations while in game is the hallmark of a professional squad. Not many collegiate teams are coached to do that. Zips switch formations in more than half their matches, usually when substituting personnel, so as to not draw the opposition’s attention. Now, a 4-4-2 is a new (outdated formation) wrinkle. I would like to see us try it again, with same personnel. It’s like an NBA team running The Weave or NFL team running the Wing T. Ha!

  12. Missed this game on Labor Day. Zips have won 3 of first 5 and are 3-0 at home! No matches until next Friday when they head to Dayton to play a very strong Flyers team that owns a win over #12 Michigan State. Strong competition on the road (West Virginia and Dayton) and very beatable opponents at the Cub Cadet Field. So, it's hard to tell just how good this team will be when MAC competition starts in two weeks. But, there's real hope we'll exceed the coaches prediction (last place) 🤦‍♀️!

  14. So hundreds of millions of dollars of subsidy from hundreds of thousands of students taking student loans at MAC universities is worth it so that 30 players who become millionaires upon being drafted can have a local brand? I don't think so. Cost>>>>>>>>>Benefit

  15. Because I love my Alma Mater. I'm a diehard for my alma mater, despite having degrees from two other universities (one incorporated into my name) that I could easily get more joy from following. Akron was my home for a decade+. But at some point you have to call out the bullshit. If we actually give-a-damn about something, at some point we have to call a spade a spade. The Football Program IS NOT GOOD for the University of Akron, it hasn't been a good investment, it will never be a good investment, and we're kidding ourselves. It's time to stop pretending it's ever going to be anything other than a joke.

  16. Dude I was done with the Football program when they fired Terry Bowden. Bowden was a Nationally Recognized Name, and you fired him the same year you beat your only Big-10 team in history, a year removed from a MACC appearance for a no-name coach from John Carroll. Paying them both at the same time. Please stop defending this BS.

  17. Part of the issue is that it's challenging to market a sh** product. Nobody wants to watch 3 1/2 hours of bad football regardless of what free giveaways or extra amenities are added.

  18. In what world do you think Akron football is subsidized anywhere close to that figure? Total athletics, maybe. But the football budget doesn’t even come close to that

  19. This. Akron being so bad at marketing/fan engagement has never made sense to me. They have one of the top marketing franchises in all of minor league baseball 2 minutes down the road. Figure it out.

  22. And you apparently don't think past a headline, and misrepresent what other people are saying. If your program is receiving money from student fees, your program is a net negative. Period. Fullstop. If your program is receiving non-football donation or other school funds, your program is a net negative. Guess what? Akron Football has a Revenue of $30,000,000! Must be good right!? Except $20,000,000 comes from non-football other school funds, which is in most-part a student-fee that's not designated for football, but mostly goes to football. Boise State Football receives $15,000,000 of subsidy to break-even. All while it's cutting programs slashing budgets elsewhere on campus. It's an eff'n joke. You could cut the program tomorrow and it'd be a net positive windfall for Boise State.

  25. Which exists. You're not getting much "competition" between Kent and Akron. More like oversaturation and limited resources. Academic research IS NOT like Business. There are limited research grants and $$$, and with Republican States and Republican-run Congress cutting funding for most crucial research, there isn't any competition to be had. NSF ain't going to be funding to grants on the same topic in the Mid-West at universities less than 20 miles away from each other.

  26. They lost if I recall, and the outcome was never in doubt. So getting the #3 seed wasn't worth more than wiping your own ass with it. And no, I won't STFU, it's this kind of lame-ass pettyfogging that has led universities like ours to making dumbass financial decisions to support absolutely worthless football programs, all so a bunch of suits can pad their resumes. It's same pissass financial analysis that leads so many businesses into ruin because people value the dream over a sound cost benefit analysis. Has being the #3 seed helped Boise State Financially? Nope. So why don't you sit down and STFU. What tangible benefit has football been to Boise State? Not. A. Godamend. eff'n. Thing. Oh, they have a #3 seeding and lose to Big-10 Penn State, while cutting programs and professors. Give me a eff'n break.

  27. The merchandise game sucks today. Like seriously, wtf happened? I remember when I was at UA 2008-2013, there were SO MANY OPTIONS when it came to gear and merchandise. Now it's all generic slop.

  28. What they should do is make a unified state system(s) like California. Have one research branch, and one professional branch; but all one system; have the professional and research branches coexisting, but the the individual branches no overlapping in the same geographical areas. Kent and Akron both don't need nursing schools. Both don't need biology departments doing research ... etc.

  30. A few years ago, I brought up the Rubber Ducks, who play less than a mile away (a 20 minute walk) from campus. If you haven’t been to a minor league game, they keep fans entertained. Games, prizes, T shirt launchers, stuff for the kids (get ‘em interested early). There’s games and videos on the Jumbotron when there’s a lull. It’s often silly but in engages fans. There are simple ways to engage the fans that doesn’t cost a whole lot.

  35. Big changes looming on the horizon include not just where the football program will fit but where/how the school will exist as an individual entity. There's a major public college shakeout coming for the State of Ohio, and the 14 existing public universities will very likely become seven or five within the next 15 years. I have a feeling the state will return to its "four in the corners, one in the middle" concept, which will pit multiple schools against one another, particularly in NE and SW Ohio.

  36. The Missouri Valley Conference has a separate website for their football conference and the rest of their sports Missouri Valley Football Conference website Missouri Valley Conference main(?) website Missouri Valley Football Conference Illinois State Indiana State Murray State North Dakota North Dakota State Northern Iowa (UNI) South Dakota South Dakota State Southern Illinois Youngstown State That's a solid football conference which we wouldn't win right now. NDSU would name their score on us. Missouri Valley basketball schools: Belmont Bradley Drake Evansville UIC Illinois State Indiana State Murray State Northern Iowa (UNI) Southern Illinois Valparaiso For 30 years I've been absolutely dead set against dropping down but I've been kicked in the balls so often as a Zips football fan that I've broken and would absolutely give this move serious consideration... were it offered.

  37. I think you're wasting your time trying to convince the wrong person. I'm not the audience you need to convince. I've said for a few years now that the cost for G5 football has grown too outrageously high and something needs to be done. Whether its just mailing it in and us being the Pirates of FBS (spend little to nothing, but collect the revenue sharing) or do something more drastic like drop down to non-scholaship FCS.

  38. Not all 1 bid conferences are the same. It's true the MVC typically gets 1 bid, but they are seeded better than the MAC. Below are the seeds by years. 2025 - Drake 10th (2 bids was likely had Drake lost in conference tournament) 2024 - Drake 12th 2023 - Drake 12th 2022 - Loyola Chicago 10th (Had path to at-large had they lost conference tournament) 2021 - Drake (at-large 11th), Loyola Chicago 8th As you can see in the last 5 years years the MVC had 1 at-large and their teams were seeded 8, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12. There is also a pathway for an at-large, but only if the top team from the regular season loses in the conference tournament. The MAC doesn't have that luxury. Also, your odds of winning a tournament game an 8-10 seed are far greater than as a 13 or 14, which is what the MAC typically gets seeded. Besides all of this, I'm not just an Akron Zips fan. I actually enjoy watching quality college basketball. Looking at our MAC schedule there are only a handful of games that I'm excited for. The majority are against cupcakes. Akron would be more battle tested come tournament time as they would be playing a higher level of competition. I understand joining the MVC is likely never going to happen. I'm more just sharing my thoughts out loud.

  39. Honestly, how would the MVC even benefit us? It’s been relegated to a 1 big league (same with A10 basically). The Big East wouldn’t take us (nobody cares about college soccer). A tougher bball league makes it harder for us to play in March Madness. We’re in a college athletics era where it’s P4 or bust aside from a few select programs (Memphis BB, Gonzaga BB,etc) and it sucks!

  40. Actually, the student fees largely support athletics, so they a paying. Think of the students non participation like this. You are forced to buy a gallon of milk because you need a cup of it to make something and milk at your store is only sold in gallon sizes. You make the dish requiring a cup of milk and put the reminder in the refrigerator. After a while, the remainder of the gallon of milk spoils in the back of your refrigerator. You have two choices: 1. Drink the milk and get sick. 2. Pour the milk down the drain and write off the loss. The students are pouring the milk down the drain.
