More Cuts coming to Akron ...
Hilltopper replied to ZipCat's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I'm hearing the professor to student ratio is way out of whack in the polymer program. -
I think the weeknight games exposed how the MAC was willing to whore itself out for a few bucks. Also, lots of potential recruits from warm southern states saw just how cold and miserable it was to play a night game in November in the north. That has coincided with the rise of the southern schools growth as large swaths of northerners have migrated to warmer climates.

Snow bowl game.

What happened to that beating a dead horse emoji?

Nothing is going to happen very fast in regards to hiring a new AD. Dr J is the acting head of the athletic department right now. With all the other personnel issues facing the university right now, hiring a new AD isn't at the top of the list.

Lyles helped to the locker room with his ankle wrapped in ice. Doesn't look good. -
Games 4, 5 & 6- The Akron Basketball Classic

It's pretty clear the 2 best players are Tavari and Amani. Their experience in Groce's system showed tonight. -
Charles Guthrie has resigned

In case you haven't noticed, the MAC is a football centric conference. Football is the #1 emphasis at every school. G5 schools can only afford to put enough money into to one sport to be competitive. In fact, the MAC cares so little about other sports that they got rid of men's soccer! So yes, Akron by virtue of it's membership in the MAC is a football school. Sometimes the truth hurts. BTW, it was Guthrie who used his connections with those other AD's in the BE to find a great landing place for men's soccer. -

You realize that without Guthries connections and efforts, we wouldn't be in the BE or have Emil? -
Whoever is hired as the new AD is going to have his hands full. Big budget cuts are coming and the new AD will be viewed as a a hatchet man. Charles did the best he could with the cards that were dealt to him. Over the last 3 years the athletic department budget has been reduced by $6 million. We went from a marketing department of four down to one. Every sport had it's budget cut. Even with that obstacle he still managed to get many significant projects accomplished. New turf at Infocision, new scoreboard at Infocision, complete renovation of Lee Jackson field just to mention a few. The overall condition of all our venues improved. He worked hard to retain our best coaches, men's basketball, men's soccer and swimming. If they were unhappy with him they would have left for many of the lucrative offers they recieved during his tenure. We won 11 MAC championships and one BE championship. Did he probably miss on hiring Joe Mooehead? Maybe, but at the time is was a wildly applauded move. I'm not sure short of a miracle, anyone can turn around Zips football. As far as him being an outsider, you could say that about every AD we have had since Jim Dennison. He did miss on the logo change. He misread how much our fan base liked the logos we had. He also missed on the baseball coaching hire that put us back a few steps. Since he is a NY native and has worked in that market before(Columbia) I think be successful at Fordham. This is what happens at major institutions when there is a leadership change. The new leader wants to bring in his guys to execute his vision.

Good for Charles. Definitely a better situation career wise than staying here to endure all the cuts that are soon to come.
-
Charles is a class guy. Glad he is able to head home with the new job. His wife is also from that area. Good luck to whoever succeeds him at Akron. They are going to need it with what is coming down the line for the athletic department and university as a whole.
-
Not only that, but it is also a huge magnet for people who have a work at home job. My son lived there for a while. Probably 50% of the people in his apartment complex fell into that category.

You're dreaming. 🤣

CLT is warm and sunny all year. NEO is cold and gloomy from December to mid March. That is a big reason why people are flocking there and to other southern cities.
-
It's a commitment to donate $20,000.
-
The reason we play the money games is to make up for the lack of ticket sales revenue from our most expensive sport. Football! Imagine if we could average 20k attendance for 6 games. If we just grossed $15 per fan, that would be $1.8 million in revenue. Then would could get by with a more manageable OOC schedule.

I know this seems crazy, but the athletic department has no say in how the team shop and bookstore operate or what items they sell. One of the many frustrating aspects of the administration at UA. Hopefully RJ can change this.

An outside party has to setup any NIL program. Nobody was willing to do that. It wasn't for a lack of trying. We are not the only MAC program with no football NIL. Donors typically don't fund general operations. They fund projects like a basketball practice facility or upgrades to a baseball field. You know that.
-
Unless we ditch football completely, I don't envision any further cuts in that program. More likely elimination of a few other programs. I'd name them but I'm not interested in getting pelted with tomatoes from the fans of those teams on this forum.
-
Unless JoMo resigns or the new AD comes with a couple of $million in his back pocket there won't be any change. More likely is the new AD will be wielding a hatchet, prepared to slash the budget.

Riq doesn't need any seasoning of how to act like a pro. Most NBA picks are just kids with no idea how to act.
-
They hired the same guys who gave us the Z logo. Those guys were insistent on the A logo. No amount of input from fans, former athletes or donors was changing their minds. I was part of the process.

Not happening.

TSA at the gate was not Guthries idea.
