clarkwgriswold
From the UA Athletics website- Scouting the Spartans South Carolina Upstate enters the game with a 1-3 record after dropping two-straight games to N.C. 1981 grad
Looking at some early stats it seems we are just a continuation from last year, the team that can't shoot straight. We are shooting 36% from the field and a dismal 29% from the 3 line. Remember, 2 of our 3 games were against weak competition. Our best shooters are Reese at 58% and Banks at 44% and 42% from the 3 line. X man is our gunner with 49 shots taken, 12 more than anyone else on the team but he is shooting 32% from the field and 29% from the 3 line. LCJ is shooting 16% from the 3 line. Maybe those 3 balls 10 feet beyond the 3 line are not a good idea? Biggest surprise of the year, we are shooting 83% from the foul line. (The starters are shooting free throws extremely well but our bench players are not)

(The starters are shooting free throws extremely well but our bench players are not) The jump shots are a head scratching to say the least, as in today's game, it's not like everyone on the floor didn't come up through AAU which promotes nothing but shooting. Interested to see in year 3 how Groce corrects that continuous problem. The free throw shooting shouldn't be a surprise. Since the day Groce took over, he has emphasized the fundamentals, and we've seen consistent FT shooting for the most part these past couple seasons. kreed5120
The jump shooting isn't a head scratcher whatsoever. Last season Akron attempted the 12th most 3's per game out of 351 teams. It's clearly a focal part of Groce's offense and he's clearly recruiting guys who are trigger happy. I honestly don't mind being a 3-point shooting heavy team as I feel with the shorter line in the college game it's a bit overpowering and a great equalizer for lessor talented teams. If we want to be that team we just need to get guys who can actually shoot.
clarkwgriswold
I get the three point shooting thing. It's what the college game has become, on all levels. I just hate how hastily the Zips occasionally default to it and that most penetration seems to be solely geared to kicking out. In reality though, if they were making a reasonable percentage of them I wouldn't be whining about it! Let's hope for a more entertaining game than Friday night's slopfest. Talk about a game killing your early season enthusiasm.

The Hip Zip
We've looked good and lost and we've looked bad and won. I'll be curious to see if this is a team that is developing a tendency to play to the level of their opponents. I sure hope that is not the case. I want to see a thirty point win tonight. RowdyZip
Anybody looking to get rid of some tickets or know of any suave marketing deals out there? I've got a 4-year-old and 6-year-old who likely won't make it through the whole game and would like to attend prior to MAC season.

Blue & Gold
They’re looking much better to start the game than they did on Friday. I like that our first two buckets were by Reese in the paint.
