How many of us thought we'd be in this position after losing three straight games almost a month ago?  I'll admit that I didn't.  At the time, the team wasn't playing well and was struggling against the bottom teams in the conference.  It's amazing to see how this team has adapted and grown in less than a month.  And Groce...he's a magician in March.

I sure didn't. After the 2nd KSUcks game at the JAR I mentioned to my brother-in-law that the offense has been like pulling teeth and watching paint dry all season long and, I'll admit, I was getting a little aggravated w/ Groce & Co.  But then Bryan Trimble was asked to take his "leave of absence" from the team and the rest is history.  It's been amazing to watch.

The offense is still deliberate, but that's what blows my mind - that's not typical Groce style. At all. But Groce has adapted his style to the number of rotation players he has, and has done so at an extremely high level.

Funny/weird stat:

Kent won the title in 2008 and didn’t win again until 2017. 9 years.

Ohio won the title in 2012 and didn’t win again until 2021. 9 years.

Akron won the title in 2013 and didn’t win again until 2022. 9 years.

This is truly a funny/weird stat. Based on it, one should bet on Western Michigan to capture next years MAC tournament championship.

Go ponies.

Ken Carman just mentioned he is going to do a segment on Akron/KSUcks this morning on 92.3, in case anyone else wants to hear more media burial of our rival.

Pushed back until tomorrow. They decided to go with Lima's engagement with the last segment.

Having followed the Zips since Dambrot first became an assistant coach and always going to Cleveland for the games I was trying to figure out what was different about this title run and it finally struck me.  This is the first time I can remember is that we overachieved in Cleveland.  For those people who are historians of this team, have we ever won the championship from a 4 seed?  I cannot remember playing 3 difficult teams in a row  and winning each time.  It seems to me that although we have been to the NCAA tournament 3 times with Dambrot, we were always a high seed.  I can also remember losing the championship as a high seed after the team performed poorly in the final game.

The Zips came to Cleveland and played to the best of their ability in 3 straight games.  The coach and the team deserve a lot of credit ignoring the pressures and just playing great basketball in Cleveland.

"Kent State and Akron, whose campuses are separated by 10 miles, have one of the nation's most bitter rivalries."

ESPN does a better job than local media.

The bitter rival is entioned in this article....

They were much bigger underdogs in the 2011 tournament. But I think this year they played 3 better teams than they have in most of the previous tournaments.

The QFinal game against Buffalo was really like a final.  The top 5 teams all could have won minus Ohio, who was struggling with fatigue, illness, and injury.

Thanks for all of the posts.  Obviously, I went to all of those games but I did not remember them being a lower seed.  I must have a selective memory because what stands out in my mind are the Saturday nights I walked out of the Q disappointed by a loss and a poor performance by a team that had the talent to win but just did not play well in the championship game.  (I also remember the bank shot that lost us a game and the missed jumper that gave Ohio U the championship and the run in the NCAA that lead to Groce going to Illinois)

Really is time for a fresh start.  Put Dambrot and the bad memories behind the program. Marla was right about that in her column.  Was a good take.    After 5 years ? With Groce,  new Era.

I went to a sort of send off to Cleveland for the 2017 team.  There was such bad energy in the JAR.  You can see how stressed KD was as he tried to convince the faithful that THIS would be the year.

When I went up this last Saturday,  that overwhelming dread was gone.

Just finished watching the replay. Wow, that defense was incredible! If you take away half of the completely unforced turnovers the Zips had in the first half, that think would have been over before the U4 media timeout. On top of that, nice jumpshooting and a heroic effort from Hamilton really saved them from this one being a 30-point blowout. Aside from some bad unforced turnovers, the Zips played pretty much a perfect game. Kent had their runs early in each half, but that happens in any game. The Zips didn't panic either time, and the culture won out.

I will laugh for eternity at Carry skipping to the camera after getting the deficit to 1. Literally, an all-time Akron vs. Kent moment. Honestly, one of my favorite Akron wins of all-time, if not THE favorite. Love this team!!!!
