Howdy, I don't typically stick my head into the football forum, but this was just too good to pass up. It wasn't all that long ago that I mentioned that there were seasons in the past that I believe U of I avoided playing NIU like the plague because they feared losing to little brother. Not only does this win validate my case, it doesn't surprise me in the least. Awesome for the MAC!! Good luck to Akron on the gridiron and I'll see you all when basketball tips off.
MDZip
How much respect does the MAC get? NIU knocks off Notre Dame (but is still ranked below them), and then gets listed at #25 as... 😂

egregiousbob
As to whether NIU win is biggest in MAC history, I believe Miami had some biggies in the early to mid-1970s and early 80s. They beat LSU in Baton Rouge, for instance. Edited September 9 by egregiousbob
Captain Kangaroo
ND has recently lost to a mediocre Marshall team, and Cincinnati at home. Awesome, jealousy-inducing win by NIU. But ND is prone to such losses.

ND's raking is historically inflated due to the whole, um, Jesus thing. That was not a Top 5 team...maybe top 15.

kreed5120
Notre Dame is often overrated. I don't really attribute it to a Jesus thing. It's a combination of them playing a lot of softer ACC schools, which pads their win totals and from name recognition of being a blue blood. Nebraska was also overrated for many years in the early 2000s. Surviving on their prior success. Eventually the bottom gave out and anyone with have a brain could see they were no longer elite. Notre Dame is still a good/great program today. They're just clearly a tier below the elite programs that they often get grouped with. Regardless, phenomenal win by NIU. As AL Davis use to say, "just win, baby." They do that and they will continue to add more votes. Polls this early in the season shouldn't carry much weight. zippy5
ND hasn't really been too overrated lately. Not that I like sticking up for them, but they've been very solid lately. Maybe this year was overhyped, we'll see. But it's a pretty good win imo, better than anything we've done
