  1. They were transfers, not redshirts. They practiced with the team, attended every home game and seemed very engaged. Can't imagine they'd pi$$ away a year.

  2. Not sure this is apparent to others as to why you posted this. Abdi Mohamed indicated on his twitter account (@_abdi_1) yesterday that he is transferring to Akron for the 2018 season.(thanks to TennZip for finding that).

  3. ”Who are these guys?!” was the question I kept asking myself regarding The University of Akron’s 2018 Football Recruiting Class. The local newspapers gave Akron’s February 7th, 2018 National Signing Day virtually no print space. Northeast Ohio television stations all but ignored the event. And the various internet recruiting websites again focused their columns on the Power 5 programs. Aside from the noble efforts of a couple local AM radio sports talk personalities, the Zips signing day coverage fell well short of what a real fan wanted to learn about the class, and certainly beneath the coverage it merited. 2018 has a chance to be a great year for Zips football, and the kids bound to these 25 letters of intent have some really interesting storylines. So I thought I would head down to the Zips football offices and see if Head Coach Terry Bowden would give me a little time to discuss the class. Here’s what he had to say. 4. Count me squarely in the camp that believes we will be deeper and better next year. I see us challenging for a MAC title. That being said I send out much love and respect to Torrey and Sina. I think both made the right call. The fit was not there at UA and wasn't going to be for the next two seasons. Who knows beyond that. Groce will improve the team with the scholly's he now has and I don't see any reason to doubt that he will find the talent we need. The approaching signing date means squat to me. Grace will do it in his time. I felt he did a great job last year with little time and he is now positioned to do even better since he has had more time. The team will have it's problems next season, but it will be much improved over this season. Let the guy do his job. The world is not collapsing.

  5. Would Ivey stick around if there wasn't a strong probability of success next season? Or, if he didn't have confidence in Groce? I'm with Jimmond. I think we'll be much more talented and deeper next year, and by season's end we'll be in the hunt for a finals appearance.

  8. Both great kids who played hard and helped in a down year. However, if they were ever going to be major contributors, especially SIna, that's not a positive comment on the future direction of the Zips.

  9. ABJ: Two players leaving University of Akron men's basketball team The article cites Patton from the Dayton Daily News: “I wouldn’t say I made a mistake,” he told the Daily News. “I wanted to figure out what I really want to do, be a role player or shine somewhere. I just felt I could find a better fit somewhere else.” Good move for Torrey. I think he made the right call.

  11. Travis had some nice words about John F. in this link https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/recruiting-views:-hilltop-addition_aid43983 Midfielder John Fitzgerald, a member of the Barca Academy outfit in Arizona, will join the Zips in 2019. An under-the-radar attacking talent, Fitzgerald is a wide player that can take players off the dribble, and is the kind of technician that will fit into Akron’s style of play. Originally from Florida, Fitzgerald has 19 appearances for the U19 side in the Development Academy season, and will look to make an impression once he gets to Ohio next year.

  12. Going to TRY?? Doesn't sound like you're fully committed. I'll be there. I'll provide a semi-detailed report on what goes down although the caveat remains that I'll be focused primarily on the offense.

  13. We're going to be good. I don't see Hester as being 3rd string by any means. I'm expecting a grad transfer in at PG again, but we'll see

  14. Not surprised. He always looked uncomfortable. Good luck to him! I'm very happy to have another scholarship available for Groce to use.

  17. The JAR is still structurally fine. I posted a report on this site 2-3 years ago that detailed the report conducted by that independent party that conducted the feasibility study on the cost of repairing the Rubber Bowl. Long story short, the Rubber Bowl was totaled. Building a new basketball arena while continuing playing football games at the Rubber Bowl wasn't an option. The option was either build a new football stadium or disband the program. Infocision was built at a cost of $61 million. That's really cheap compared to most other stadiums built and renovated in that same time period. Could have they built it a little smaller and saved a few million? Probably, and honestly they should have. It still would have only saved a few million dollars at most. Not enough to fund a ~$70 million basketball arena.

  18. Nick McCausland is one of my neighbors. Comes from a great soccer family. Green has a pretty good program at the D-1 level reaching the final 4 during Nicks junior year. Should be fun to watch him develop.

  19. I'll get excited when we get a commitment. I don't understand all the optimism right now. We're 5 days from signing day and we don't have even one verbal for the 2 slots we had before Patton left. I'll get excited if this staff closes the deal with some of these kids.

  20. Speaking of Zips women, last I looked the softball team was something like 1-23.
