  1. The ESPN betting talking head on SportsCenter just featured this matchup and said we should all bet the Zips and the points! Spoke highly of Moorhead and DJ!

  5. Gooooooooooood morning Philadelphia!!!! GO ZIPS!!!!!! This is such a fascinating matchup and I have no idea what to expect. It should be a pretty good game, I’d imagine. Would love to see the Zips open a can of whoop-ass, but I think they could be slow to come on like last year—maybe taking 2-3 weeks to get into a groove instead of 4-5. Hope I’m wrong though. It’s a great day to be a Zip!

  8. Coach Gensler seems to be big on school spirit. He has been all about backing the football team on X. This is cool to see.

  9. From his accuracy, to his arm strength, to his leadership, to his sideline body language, Irons isn't the guy. He has never won and he isn't going to win.

  10. This is actually a real football team. OMFG! Also, LOVE the sideline tire hahaha

  11. The offensive plays are there but Irons can't hit his receivers. This is rough.

  13. I too attended Thursday night versus Dayton. A long-time season ticket holder for MSOC, I attend 2-3 WSOC matches per season. I love futbol. If I am the HC, I would make adjustments in my personnel once I go up early 2-0 to a side thought to be superior. Especially since defending is my team's weakness. Keep formation and system the same but move my best talent back in the formation. In particular, move F to MF. (Defensive midfield is where the Zips got crushed.) Give some bench players a fresh look at forward. Close out the contest. I am familiar with freshman F Rachel Wenzel, having watched her play for many years in HS and in club. She played the full 90. I was surprised to discover that Rachel is among the best players on the roster. In fact, most of the Zips players who caught my eye are underclassmen. Sophomore F Emma King is a player. Freshman GK Sara Bower is tough and technical, if not a bit short to play GK. Freshman D Hannah Langstaff had a rough night, but her talent is evident. Freshman Anna Simmons showed some spark off the bench at offensive MF. Players listed above will be better in the future, and they are already among the best on the quad right now. So, I disagree with zippy-claws regarding the recruiting of late. Coach Jen Simonetti is a coach I would have hired as an Athletic Director. She has the player pedigree and the coaching experience perfect for the position. To speak with her personally, or to watch her conduct practice, one comes away impressed. "There is a leader I would fight for," is the common response. But you guys are right; results are what matter at this level. Jen must convert these players and/or bring in a few of her own. She has until next year to show real improvement. It bears repeating that the facilities and resources at Akron deserve a topflight WSOC team. And the girls' programs in NEO are among the very best in the country, whether HS or club. Recruiting in this area should not require superhuman effort. In summary, the Zips are a team of fast athletes playing the game very slowly. They are thinking way too much instead of letting it flow. Passes are tentative and without conviction, leading to passing inaccuracy and possession turnover. Futbol is not classical music, it is improvisational jazz. Zips are making sure to read the music correctly instead of just finding the groove. Sorry zippy-claws, but the coaching staff of MSOC hardly should be held up as a shining example for WSOC to emulate. The current MSOC staff has never won an NCAA Tournament match, and Embick/Coppinger last won an NCAA Tournament match in 2018. MSOC have their own problems to fix.

  15. Just an FYI, the game is on ESPN+. So if you have Spectrum, that could cause a problem as they are in a contract dispute/renegotiation with ESPN parent company Disney. A way around that is either YouTube TV (different app from regular YouTube) or with Disney+ which also gives Hulu. Hulu has ESPN+. Or I guess could just do Hulu itself, although I’m not entirely sure if that’s an option anymore. I’m not sure if these apps are offering free trials or not, but I guess it goes without saying, if you decide to do a free trial and intend on canceling might want to make yourself some kind of note to cancel before getting charged. Wanted to make everyone aware before tuning in a few mins before kickoff just to be disappointed that the game is blacked out on spectrum.

  16. Some quick thoughts regarding a disappointing loss to begin the season. A lot to be excited about, but also new concerns we didn’t expect. OFFENSE: Irons is not the same QB as last year. He’s missing velocity on the far side/deep out routes he routinely exhibited last season. Outside of a handful of passes, he also struggled with his accuracy. Hard to envision he stays QB1 by the time MAC play starts, much less the entire season. No doubt the running backs are more explosive than last year. Question is, why didn’t they see more touches? Fair to say it was a bad day for the receivers. They’ve got to help their QB by reeling in some of the catchable passes that weren’t perfectly thrown. OL was excellent in pass protection until the last few drives. Run blocking was okay, not great, but there also weren’t a ton of opportunities. I believe about 20 runs were actually designed as such. DEFENSE: Run defense looked much improved. There weren’t many missed tackles and the linebackers in-particular landed a few big hits. Terray Jones, Ryan Johnson, and CJ Nunnally stood out along the DL. Antavious Fish, Bryan McCoy, and Shammond Cooper stood out at linebacker. Pass rush was disappointing. Temple threw the ball 49 times and Zips collected 0 sacks. I’m pretty sure I can count the number of times we touched the quarterback on one hand. Considering all of that, the secondary was impressive and played physically. There were some penalties that hurt, but at the same time they continued to be put in situations where the QB was allowed to have clean throwing opportunities. That’s a tough ask for a full game. FINAL THOUGHTS: Zips fans have every right (and probably should be) pissed. That’s a game we had a legitimate chance of winning. A game where everyone and their brother (outside of some in the Akron fan base) picked Temple to win. Most picked Temple to win big. There was not a talent discrepancy and Temple will likely win their fair share of games this year. If the defense can figure out a way to generate a pass rush, look out, because the physicality is there. Now the offense needs to figure out the quarterback situation. This game will not make or break the season. If anything, it shed some light on adjustments that need to be made. And FYI, I’m still not changing my season prediction. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this one get recouped somewhere along the way.

  28. Zips coaches again made some effective changes at half time. Even before the red card at 29, Gyuwon Chong was touching the ball more. Chong earned a foul at top of the box at 29....which led to Michigan player getting 2nd yellow At the start of the 2nd half, Malik Henry moved to right back and Johnny Fitzgerald came in at right winger Sammy did not start the game....He had strong 2nd half in the middle of the field. Zips were not dangerous at all on corner kicks Late in the game, the zips offense was totally right side dominant due to having a good offensive player at right back (Malik Henry) Dyson again was having to come way too far up the field to get the ball Even though shots showed 4-4 in first half, Michigan pressed and they totally dominated. Akron had huge advantage in 2nd half.

  29. Unfortunately I think there is more reality in your post than the rest of us have come to believe. We are told this program is turning around. Then you see the product on the field and all you can do is shake your head. Jen will be given time. Last year was a pass. This year is only expected to establish the foundation for success. Next year is do or die. If she can't do it we just lost three years and we are following football's miserable tradition. At least JoMo came to rescue football. Who will put women's soccer on the map remains to be seen.

  30. Not an acceptable loss under the circumstances. Up by a significant margin at half against Temple. Then your offense tanks? Defense did its job. Again, not an Irons fan after all these seasons. In Moorehead's offense the QB HAS to make plays. Has to be accurate and know when to get rid of the ball. We have seen this from Irons for too long. He is not a first or second year guy. Not accurate, holds the ball too long. After Saturday the schedule gets a lot tougher. Time for the coaches in the second season to make some tough decisions.

  31. Well said @catdaddyp Thanks for getting us prepared for this season. A lot of what you have said all off-season could be seen today. Some of the good and some of the bad. Very disappointed in the second half offense. Happy to see Golden involved with the offense, but would have liked more of Lingard and Drake Anderson. Much to build on.

  32. I said they would lose by a couple of points. No way I thought they would get blown out but to say they had a legitimate chance to win is a long mile. you don’t blow an 11 pt lead and put up goose eggs the 2nd half. They have a long way to go. 5 wins would be a success. At least they are in the middle of the pack with other MAC schools. NIU was impressive today. I watch UK vs Ball st and that has the making of another long day. small steps…. Forward. we didn’t do that today.

  33. After one of his sacks he was furious. I thought maybe he was yelling at the refs for a missed holding or facemask. Instead he was yelling at teammates. I feel bad for him. After all he's a college kid who had two surgeries that probably ruined his throwing arm. It has to be frustrating, but I think the best move is to find another option.

  34. Frustratinggggggg as hell. So much for "FINISH." Given some of what I saw from the team today, including a cornerback jumping offside, I don't so much question the talent level of this team as I do the intellect of some of its key pieces.

  35. Its not so much of DJ looking bad its his leadership which i saw none, all i saw was him fussing with players and coaches on the sideline blaming everybody we need a leader!

  40. And there is the stupidest play of the game. An offside from a cornerback when we needed a stop. How many years can we still see this type of play from Akron.

  48. The contract dispute should have no bearing on the ability to watch this game. An ESPN+ subscription is required. When streaming in the ESPN app, games that are on the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, etc.) and ESPN3 are controlled by your television provider (these games currently not available due to the dispute). Anything that is ESPN+ is a separate subscription.
