Why? I'll never understand the bitterness...5 points

I really like Jaylin Hunter's game. He's not flashy he's just really solid. 14th in the MAC in scoring; 1st in assists; first in assist to turnover ratio; 2nd in steals. The kid just seems to always make good decisions and can get an important hoop when it's needed.3 points

He did not choose to leave but wanted a commitment from the AD on a contract and the AD kept putting him off and they got into a dispute. He had turned down the Dukes numerous times but after the dispute he finally told them yes. We got Groce and the Dukes got KD so it was a win win. I do not remember him being disrespectful to anyone when he left. I agree he could have done better in the MAC Tourney but he had some letdowns by some key players. However, he always got us to Cleveland and always had us on the top of the MAC. I think he was a great coach for Akron and hope he gets into the tourney with the Dukes.2 points

Other huge thing tonight is we stink shooting 3s. They scored at will in the paint yesterday. Keep taking that ball inside. Don’t get lured by the long ball2 points

The biggest concern going into the OU and championship games is limiting TO's. This is one issue that Groce has not fixed. In my opinion he tolerates them. We do not protect the basketball. We do stupid stuff and have done so all season long. Correct the TO's and I believe we can play with anybody.2 points

I really think Tavari can add to this team if Groce would put him in the game. Groce put him in the game at the 9:56 of the first half when we were down 9. During his time in the game he scored 6 points and had a steal. He took him out at the 7:18 mark and we were down 3. After a Thornton turnover and missed layup, he put Tavari back into the game at 5:01 and we were down 4. He came out of the game at 1:15 and we were up 4. That is a plus 13 when Tavari was in the game in the first half. I thought I would see more Tavari in the 2nd half but he did not get into the game until 7 minutes left in the game. I just do not understand what Groce is thinking. In the 2nd half Tavari had a couple nice passes to Freeman. He clearly outplays Thornton and Scott but is still the last guard off the bench. He scored 6 points in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, I have to watch Dawson shoot 3 balls and go 0 for 3 again. We struggle shooting the 3 and the best 3 ball shooter sits the bench. I am hoping Tavari will see more action against Ohio but I have my doubts.2 points

I agree. The City of Akron is much better now than when I lived there 16 years ago. It's good to live in a city at some point in your life even if it's only for 4 years.1 point

Speaking of future MAC additions (hopefully), Western Kentucky is dismantling Middle Tennessee right now. Come to the MAC, Hilltoppers!1 point

1) I have no recollection of KD ever ripping Akron fans. Source on that? He still considers Akron home and roots for us to do well. There was conflict between he and Larry Williams, but he never harbored any negativity toward Akron. 2) He didn't "empty the cupboards of the program" - Tavian Dunn-Martin and Michael Hughes were the only ones that followed him, and given they were freshman, I understand why they did it. Antino Jackson transferred, but this came after Groce's hire. He attended Groce's introductory press conference and told the ABJ his recruitment was still open, but eventually decided to go elsewhere. Noah Robotham was the other transfer and he was leaving no matter who was coach as he had an offer from his hometown team, UNLV. So two guys left because of Dambrot. 3) It's hard to consistently win as a mid-major program. We made it to seven straight MAC Championships and got there nine times in eleven years. That's an insane run for a MAC school. Do I wish we won more than 3 times? Absolutely. We lost twice by one point (Penno being one of them...ugh) and another in OT. But I don't think that should take away from what was an incredible run. We've only made it back once since he left (although I think they would've gotten there in 2020). 4) While I do think it was time for mutual change between the program and KD, I hope fans never lose sight of his impact here. Akron basketball was a mediocre MAC basketball program. We had never won a MAC Championship. We rarely advanced beyond the first round. While we never got that elusive NCAA Tournament win, he built the program into a a consistent winner. If the program wasn't in good shape when he left, Groce would've never come. If you don't believe me, here's Groce shortly after being hired: "We had battles, and I have just great respect for him not only as a coach but as a person," Groce said. "We hired three former Akron Zips people in different capacities during my time at Illinois for the most part strictly based on Keith's recommendation. "I told him, 'What you've done is a big reason why I'm here.'" We don't have to make this KD vs Groce. We can appreciate what KD did here and wish him well while also being happy about having Groce.1 point

I never understood people trying to use his MAC finals record against him. It's better to go to the finals and lose then get knocked out in the first or second round. His record in the MAC tournament was 27-10 (73% winning percentages) with 3 tournament appearances. For comparison, Groce is 7-4 (64%) with 1 tournament appearance (excluding this year) while coaching in a weaker MAC than Dambrot did. It seems some think he should have won 85%-90% of the games. Edit: To clarify, I'm pleased with Groce as our coach. I'm just tired of reading this revisionist history.1 point

I was a graduate student at UA from 1993 to 1996. Compared to what we had in those days in regard to bars and restaurants, downtown Akron is a gem today.1 point

One of the Bobkitten posters has this in the signature block. Muck Fiami Kant read, Kant write Bowling Green Normie School What, we're not good enough for a denigrating nickname? I hope the team uses this for motivation. 🤣😂1 point

I don't either. He went all in to try to win with Big Dog and Kwan. Much the same way Groce has gone all in with Freeman and Ali this year. He came up short, but that team won 27 games and set the Akron win record. That team would have won 29-30 games if they were playing in this pathetic version of the MAC now. Saying the program was in decline was just factually wrong. I'm pretty indifferent to his departure now. I appreciated his time here, but at the same time I wouldn't even know how Duquesne was doing if not for the weekly updates in this thread. Some posters here just remind me of jaded lovers who can't get over their ex.1 point

It should certainly be included as its a cost of doing business. I believe it's included as part of the overall athletic budget, but just isn't hitting football directly. It just gets lumped under facilities as a whole for athletics. If I remember correctly, Infocision is being financed at a cost of ~4.5 million/yr. $4 million of that is being charged to the athletic department and $500k is being charged to the general fund to compensate for those other miscellaneous uses you mention.1 point

Miami struggled with dribbling the ball up the court. I like the added pressure by our guards. I hope we keep that up. I also liked the fact the we got our hands in the passing lanes several times.1 point

Ohio is playing well. They've also been blessed by the schedule gods. Their 7 game winning streak included Kent, Akron, and Bowling Green at home, with Western today on a neutral court. Their road games were Miami, NIU, and Buffalo. Their run ends tomorrow.1 point

Just got home from the game. Tough start, but proud of them for grinding out the win. Interesting to see Freeman not start out on Mirambeaux - probably helped him stay on the floor. Tavari, Thornton, and Scott provided some good minutes tonight - 19 points between them. Ultimately though, the difference was having the best player in the league. Enrique is special. Tomorrow will be a dogfight if it's OU. Can't wait!1 point

They're a non-profit government agency. So that's a stupid question. A better question is What is the economic impact of NASA technological development? Since it's economic impact outweighs its cost, not to mention the measurable impact it's had on STEM for the past 60 years...Here's a better question: When has SpaceX (or any private rocket company) ever returned a profit? Oh, and before you try to cite the WSJ article claiming SpaceX turned a profit in 2023 (according to self-released records), they had several investor capital fundraisers last year...and have been running in the red relying on government subsidies and contracts and private investor capital to keep going. A boondoggle isn't a good example. And relating it back to UA ... the "profit" doesn't go to UA, it goes to a private company. Is it going to decrease the cost to students? No? Is it going to increase the quality/value to students? No? It's scammy. Just like those speed cameras where 80% of the ticket goes to the private company. Just another example of the private sector leaching off the public sector tit.1 point

Nice redemptive season for KD. They’ve played really well since Grant returned. Next game will be a lot tougher for them.1 point

Using an Oxford analysis between SpaceX and NASA isn't the bolstering claim you think it is. NASA's bread-and-butter is innovating new nonexistent technology, and is hampered by political interests of Congress. While SpaceX's replication of already existent technology (that wouldn't exist without Public Funding and decades of work and research by NASA footing the upstart cost) is to be commended, their ability to innovate is nothing short of a disaster. "Failure is not an option" has been replaced with "well, it cleared the tower before it blew up!" level incompetence. No privatization generally means less-quality and less public control, which means less sense of community and less caring. Not to mention, NASA isn't actually saving that much money using SpaceX when compared to when it ran the SpaceShuttle in terms of the payloads themselves. There's a lot of bad reporting out there (that doesn't do the math they just take the reports of a private company with unopened books as gospel), and SpaceX is burning through investment cash...which demonstrates it's not running profitably (so it's all an illusion).1 point
