Last night everybody was a winner thanks to Bud Wentz. In the putting contest, a new target sign was revealed that was 50% larger and had no target hole. The announcers said all that was required to win the $10,000 prize was to hit the sign. The young lady contestant took aim and sent a straight putt right at it. Just as the ball got there, the helpers lifted the sign and the ball passed underneath. The contestant started to walk away but was informed she had indeed won $10,000! Bud was waiting with the check at the other end of the court. The shot for tuition contest took a similar twist. A student was selected as always who could win a semester of tuition by sinking a layup, a foul shot, a three point shot and a half court shot in 30 seconds. It was then announced there would be a substitute celebrity shooter. Ali Ali! He calmly sank the first three shots on his first attempt. After about 10 attempts he banked in the halfcourt shot and the crowd went wild! Kudos to Bud for thinking outside the box to make senior night special.10 points

I know it’s been mentioned already, but kudos to Groce & Co. for green lighting the Evan Wilson start. Very nice.6 points

Someone told me that the $10k putting contest was for the dance team so they can travel to nationals. So students benefited all around!4 points

Ali Ali sitting next to Wentz in the court side seats. I noticed there didn’t seem to be a seat for Groce lol.3 points

I was with the Akron Zips at the 1974 (IIRC) NCAA College Division (D2) national final 8 in Evansville and saw Tre Eaglestaff's uncle play for the Fightin' Sioux of NDU. He was an imposing power forward who went on to become an educator who has a Native American high school named for him in Seattle.2 points

If he’d stayed with the Zips he’d have probably seen fewer minutes than Marvin. Robert Morris seems like a perfect fit for him.2 points

I wonder if they took a poll that both the team and fans would prefer the second game. I know I would. Does the Corner Alley serve breakfast? 😉2 points

Allegedly, a Kent player punched Morales a couple weeks ago. Morales quit the team. Second Kent player to quit the team this year alone. My guess is somebody in the athletic department had that graphic made weeks/months ago, and the social media team was too careless to notice that Morales was in the graphic. The situation had been kept hush hush up until Kent outed themselves by posting these tweets. Nothing but class from Pinky's Portage County Circus, per usual.2 points

What's interesting about this is ... the original standard, the RPI ... is not part of the equation. Indeed, it is mostly forgotten. But it still lives and offers some interesting insights. First, the MAC is not as bad here as everywhere else with a Conference RPI of 16. Second, three MAC teams are ranked 101 or higher (Akron, 45) Third, with a Top 50 RPI the Zips could be considered a NCAA bubble team, although there are no quality (Top 100) wins to support this. That said, going 17-1 in the MAC should carry some weight in and of itself. That 2002 Kent team went 17-1 and had no quality non-con wins to speak of, either. Although, Ball State, Marshall, BG and Miami were all highly regarded 2002 MAC teams -- unlike the rank and file this season. http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_conf_Men.html1 point

Groce chose NOT to allow this team to devolve into mediocrity in age of transfer portal and NIL.1 point

Oh, I thought it was divide by Pi, which would've been the first logical, real world application of Pi ever.1 point

The most improbable component of their needs, and they don't even have the Balls to show up at Miami. Soft progrum.1 point

An RA started a tradition a couple years ago of a “Johnny Appleseed game” and this year he morphed it into a fundraiser for cancer research1 point

Since we already have this thread, I don't see the need for individual game threads for the MAC Tournament. It would be tough in any event with the quick turnarounds.1 point

Kent just got bumped to the opposite side of the bracket and the four-five is going to be Toledo-Ohio.1 point

Maybe that was intentional on our part since few outside our circle would know what the "A" stands for. 🤔 I still think the A needs to have Akron or Zips with it somewhere most of the time anyway.1 point

You all are virtual teenagers. I started work at Akron June 1965! Started graduate school at night the same year. Not only was Buchtel open, there were apartment buildings across the street- believe they were called the Char apartments (i think) used as dorms to the growing student population. there were small former homes, some used as fraternity houses, where the library is. Akron has grown and developed as a strong regional University during this period and needs to feel prouder about its strengthening than it does. It is an excellent institution and changes like this pathway enhancement will give it the visual "look" that many people associate with a strong school. Looks great Forever a Zip!1 point

Thanks for making me feel old. As it turns out, I can imagine it because I saw it. The fall of 87 was my first semester. It was the last semester Carroll Street extended through campus. I remember how awesome it was when the commons was finished.1 point
