Have you ever played football? Sideline throw isn't a play. There are multiple routes and progressions and that was one of the options. Down late in the game you have to put the ball in the air. Not to mention that we have zero run threat as it is.

Sideline throws aren't "progressed" to. They are somewhat quick hitters once the receiver hits the top of their route and breaks back. Point and case is the pick six; Ramart instantly went to that guy, staring him down in the process. Typically if a sideline throw is broken, there is not a progression, but rather a throw away over the receiver's head and out of bounds. Now, if he read the defense prior to the snap and saw that the sideline route was going to be the best option, to your point that is on Ramart. However, I would still argue in favor of making it simpler on Ramart, and not putting him through those types of decisions in that situation. 

 

My point is it's one of the most difficult throws a QB has to make, and should not have been called - especially as often - as it was tonight once Ramart came in. Instead, they should have stuck with the slants over the middle like they did on the touchdown throw, or screens.

5&10 yard outs are your pick Six,  long throws & timing & accuracy are critical, I agree a different play call to get feet wet is best but hindsight is 20/20

Did anyone watch the game on tv? On NIUs pick 6, it looked like the defender clearly stepped out of bounds on Infocision' s video board. What did it look like on CBS sports network?

At first I thought it was an obvious out of bounds, but then a different angle showed space in between the foot and white paint. What made it look so close was the shine from the wet turf.

Agree to disagree. This wasn't a quick hitter to the sideline. The play was a rollout to get him some time with a primary read over the middle and the next option was sideline, and obviously last resort take off or throw it into the stands.

 

 

In any case I think we'd all agree that he wasn't put into the greatest of spots, but the playbook is a little limited down two possessions with not much time left.

I didn't get to watch the game but I was listening to Frenchy.

 

It sounded like a good, hard-hitting, entertaining game.  

 

Kato was having a great game and the offense was both moving the ball and scoring points.  That was good to see.

 

Ramart was put in a very difficult situation, especially considering he's seen such little game action this year.

Ramart is also likely playing with a limited playbook. I agree with the calls. Give him a chance to win the game. Do not put him in to play safe football. That would show you have no confidence in the kid. I was happy he threw the TD, first. The game will come to him with a little more live action. That being said, Kato sealed himself, as the starter, again, with a good performance last night. I think it was the first time we had 4 good quarters from him.

After the first drive with that crappy conservative play call, I think the O was fine. It sucks to see Kato get injured during probably his best game all year. He's tough and looked to be a good leader out there on the sidelines after the injury. Its time we stop giving him a bad rep just because of a family member's actions. Hopefully he can get back out there soon, but I have my doubts.

 

I also think the D adjusted well after halftime. I didn't see Gilbert out there a lot though. Wonder if he is hurt? Also noticed Brady and Davis switched sides at DE.

 

Even though we didn't win, it was actually an entertaining game against the 1st place team in the MAC-W. I can live with losses like this, even though we still have breakdowns that need cleaned up. Need to get one of OU or EMU.........

Yep, it was a double digit loss where we failed to even cover the spread and were out gained by 100+ yards. NIU was clearly the better team last night.

This picture made it into Sports Illustrated Extra Mustard this morning in a tweet from Sam Borquin saying it was 7 minutes before game time.  Not a good look.

Unfortunately there was nothing open on this play. NIU had the deeper route covered. And,they were all over the sideline pattern. Hopefully, next time he pulls it down and runs or throws it to Milwee on the sideline(lol).

Last couple of games the middle of the field seems to have been open for the passing.Did they throw to a 'tight end' last night in the middle? Can't recall. Too bad that might have been a better option especially after Nelson went down.

I believe Brady did not play the first half due a targeting penalty from the last game (maybe already mentioned)? Also, have not heard why, Boxen did not play (listed on GoZips as participating but I did not see him). If i'm right about Brady the loss of these two hurt in the first half, but with Brady's return and an adjustment to hit the center in the second half the defense pulled together. I think they moved Brady to DT for parts of the game.

Yes they are. They had 300 yards on the ground. Zips slowed them down a little but when you give almost 170 to one RB and 300 total your defense got handled. Funny how that NIU safety on the blocked PAT maybe didn't seem like much. But when they had 'chased points' then finally had a chance to tie, instead they are still down by 3...ouch!

How ironic that KN was having one of his best nights against a quality defense and the Zips put up some points but came up short. They got dealt a tough hand.
