There are two options. One is to promote within hoping that you can keep the core players in tact, but likely settling for a less qualified candidate than you could get from a national search. The other option is to hire an external candidate and face a complete rebuild as the bulk of the players will likely transfer. Killing really any momentum of building off the success. In this day and age there is no continuity. Pretty much every season is a rebuild. An A-10 program is a daunting first head coaching gig. It isn’t Faust to Notre Dame, but it’s close. Hope he rights the ship. He’s only 5 games in.

I don't know about nepotism, but it is probably more like a hungry young coach so eager to sit in the big chair that he makes a bad career decision. Duquesne is a historically bad program. I said months ago he would regret the decision.

I dont think this is fair, personally. Groce, an experienced and winning coach, went 14-18 in his first year at Akron. There's a transitional period for most programs when there's a coaching change. Let's give Dru some time before we insult his credentials.

ClevelandZip
Maybe Dru can throw us a bone and schedule a home-and-home between the Zippers and the Dooks before he’s canned. Rooting for him to turn it around, though.

He should get more than a year, but Groce didn’t inherit an A-10 team coming off a March madness win and then start his tenure with losses to Lipscomb, Milwaukee, and Hampton. Pretty horrid start. Of the 8 players who averaged at least 15 MPG on last year's Duquesne team, 6 were seniors and are now gone, including their top 2 scorers. 1981 grad
This thread is 5 years old, 27 pages, KD has been retired from coaching for 6 months, and the last 10 posts do not even mention KD. This topic will just never die. (LOL)

clarkwgriswold
I'm going to keep rooting for Dru as he is a Zip through and through. He walked into a tough situation with graduations and transfers and I'll wait to see what he can do over a couple of seasons with his own recruits before deeming his brief tenure at Duquesne a failure. I'll also not judge his decision to take on the challenge. There aren't many people who would pass up an opportunity at what is essentially a promotion to the top position in your organization.

Let'sGoZips94
I think what he's saying is Akron lost most of their production as well, but doesn't look nearly as bad as Duquesne.
kreed5120
Groce inherited both Utomi and Ivey who were both great. The issue was there wasn't much besides them.

Let'sGoZips94
After getting his first win as a coach, Dry and his Fighting Dukes drop one to St. Peter's... Just a brutal, brutal start to Dru's HC career. I hope he can turn it around, sincerely. Edited 3 hours ago by Let'sGoZips94
