We’ll, Charles Amankwa got an offer from KSUcks. 😶🤢

I’m assuming he expected bigger offers when he entered the portal. Instead of helping the Zips win a few more games or being CB1 going into 2023, he’s now deciding between Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Stony Brook, Illinois State, and Bryant.

I wasn't sure if this is the right place to post this, but I saw reports that multiple teams are offering Drake Maye $5 million to transfer. The transfer portal is becoming big business.

I forget if it was 92.3 The Fan or the Pat McAfee Show discussing this, but the idea was thrown out that the NFL could become a pay cut for some players that wouldn't be selected in the first couple of rounds. That's a wild thought, but good for these players.

An Indiana basketball player used some of his NIL money to pay off his sister's student loans.

Loving this NIL stuff. The college athletics product will be better for it in the short term and long term.

Never forget, when social media influencers - particularly YouTube - started to become prominent, NCAA athletes were barred from this income. NCAA eligibility was on the line for anyone who wanted to make that side money. If it feels "out of control" now, just remember how overly controlled it was previously, then laugh at the chaos that has exploded in the rich elites' faces that lined their pockets on the backs of student athletes for decades.

I think you're right. And my version of "better" is more entertaining and competitive. There are always going to be the usual cast of characters, around 10 teams, that are always at the top because they can throw money at winning. I'm not interested in those teams and I really don't watch them because their games aren't very competitive or entertaining.

I'm more interested in how the free movement of labor (transfer portal) has made G5 football the most entertaining in college football right now. The quality of players has created better competition and entertainment across the board. We see it in bowl games this year. I know as mac fans we can get down on the conference, but the football is better now than it has been in years. Akron is a much better team than last season and will be even better next year. Now, if they could stop pimping out their schools to P5 schools and play games at more convenient times/days for fans (see pimping out) the MAC will have something. The ongoing suicide needs to stop though.

Agreed and pretty much exactly what I meant by "better product". Instead of the 3 star studs being 3rd string depth chart guys at OSUcks/Bama/etc., they're becoming 1st string studs for G5 schools. It is very much so a product enhancement tool for the vast majority of college football.

Another side effect the portal is creating is making better high school players available to G5 and FCS schools. The portal is hurting high school recruiting when it comes to the P5 level, but players who in previous years would be signing at P5 are now available to G5. (Landers may have been a case here.) On the flip side, there is always the possibility those kids have a great season or two and then transfer up to P5.

The downside is the G5 is going to be the minor leagues for the P5. You might get 1 productive year out of a player after spending 2 years developing them before they transfer.

For every one on the way up there will be one on the way down.

No disagreement there. It's harder in football given the volume of players needed to field a team, but in basketball building through the portal seems like the better option compared to recruiting freshman for this reason. Better to have a player that can help you now instead of spending it on a development project who bolts as soon as they can become a productive contributor

Basketball is interesting. The TP has made college basketball more competitive, but has also made it very sloppy.
