Game 20- Miami

Recommended Posts

The Zips head off to Oxford this weekend to face 9-10 Miami in a Saturday 1:00 game. The Redhawks are 3-4 in the MAC with wins over Ball State, EMU and Buffalo and losses to CMU, BG, Toledo and WMU.  This will be the second year in a row that Groce and Steel’s mom will be spared her sons having to face off twice in the regular season.

6’8” 305 pound senior forward and former UA recruiting target Anderson Mirambeaux (affectionately referred to on Ohio U’s Bobcat Attack as the “fat guy”) leads the Redhawks in scoring at 13.8 ppg.   6’5” win Darweshi Hunter is second in scoring at 12.6 ppg.    Miami is 9th in offense and 5th in defense in the MAC.

I'm starting to worry a little about Dawson and his shooting.  I love his grit and effort, but if you take out his 3/5 and 4/7 shooting on threes against Ball State and BG, he's 4 of 23 on threes in MAC play.  Remarkably, 35 of his 37 shots in MAC play have been threes.  104 of his 123 shots on the season have been threes.  I'd really like to see him pass one up here or there or shorten up his shot/penetrate.  I'm having Trimble flashbacks.

I am not keen on 3 point specialist.  That was Hunter last year and then his parents came to visit and suddenly he learned to rebound and score in the paint.  Maybe we should give Dawson's parents a call?

I agree that Dawson should drive the paint more. But as to his shooting percentages, I believe I have heard something about water finding it's level. I just hope it happens soon.

That's my hope too.  His 3 point percentage in his last full season was .360.  Hopefully, he has a run in him to get him back there.

I really wish writers would avoid articles things like this.  We can have these conversations AFTER the season-

What's the piece even about?

I see newspapers are now like cable where they show you an introductory price, but conveniently avoid telling you the price thereafter.

If you watch the press conference from the last game there were a few questions about how far this team can go, a lot of it is the answers from that. Enrique obviously said “we are taking it one game at a time, but we have another gear in us”

Don’t love that this the article tries to look too far into the future, just a superstitious thing. At least no one pulled a Chris Payton in the article, the players are humble and focused

I don't know, a lot of us on here are always complaining about the lack of attention that our program receives, so I refuse to hate on this kind of article. Yeah, it puts unneeded pressure/expectations on the team, but this is also the kind of thing that can draw out the "Joe Akrons" that claim they won't support the Zips because they aren't really relevant. Articles like this are what the "big programs" get all the time. Baby steps, but it seems like our program has made a bit of progress this season. Between the extra press I've seen the Zips get both from the ABJ/random national press on social media and getting selected for multiple games on ESPN2, there is a different feel in my opinion. Hopefully UA can build on this in terms of keeping momentum in getting better talent and increasing attendance.

Good points @UAZippers.

My reluctance is primarily based upon superstition.

These are the top 2 teams in 3pt. defense in MAC play. I'd love to see a breakout performance like the 2020 team would have where we dominate the bad MAC teams on the road.

I would like to see a breakout performance where we dominate a team home or away.  The only dominate game I can remember this season was at Norther Illinois, the worst team in the conference.  During the post game, Tribble and Freeman indicated this team has another gear.  Would love to see it today.  Build the lead to 20 and keep it there.

They do seem to have the need to make things interesting.  I'm with you.  I'd love to see them establish a first half lead, come out from half and put away a team and then cruise.  Unfortunately, I don't see it happening in the cave that is Millett Hall where strange things seem to happen.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I don’t see a run away win. There were times in both the NIU and Kent road games when the Zips were poised to run the score up to a 30 point advantage only to get their momentum stymied by the refs. Now there are 2 ways to make the refs less relevant, hit a very high percentage of your perimeter shots or be so strong and dominant in the paint that you can still score with guys draped all over. Just don’t expect an And One. Past Zips teams had moments where they were completely on fire from deep. I hoping to see that from this team at some point, but I will take the win anyway we get it.
