Akron at Ohio State

Recommended Posts

Biggest takeaways

Front 6 looked like they could be really good against lesser competition. They held Ohio States run game in check all day
Finley looks like he can be the guy but man he needs to stay healthy and safe. The o line should hold better against lesser competition but if not he’s in trouble.
We have a D1 kicker! Could be a game changer in one score games

I liked how Moorehead called the game I really hope he gets the confidence to allow for more play action and deeper throws but I completely get why we avoided it with the o line being totally outmatched today

Wide Recievers need to do

so much more hopefully it was just a matter of not getting plays to develop but we will see.

Hell of a lot better than 2021 let’s hope it can translate the next few weeks.

Inhave a friend who kinda follows OSU. He said Akron Defense was better than expected. The Offense not so much.

I only hope that the D doesn't get sobeat up that they are gassed for Colgate and OU. The O-line is still terrible. Moorehead better hope that Bullock is ready because against Rutgers and South Carolina Finley is gonna get beat up. If they can get at least 21 points out of the offense the defense can win a couple of games.

Wanna see the Colgate and OU games. Gary Danielson said the OU game is the key game of the season for Akron.

He was my future after Finley in CFB25😂. Played 3 years after redshirt and went like 28-10 for me me over that span

😂 Not going to lie I've had way more fun playing that game than anything else that has come out in decades. I won two National Championships with Finley and then recruited a mobile QB. He's a 99 speed but sucks at everything else. I just run around all game.

Celebrate! We are better, but not by much if you measure us on today's performance against OSU. Defense is a strength if they aren't out there forever. Playcalling was good, thanks Joe. Running game sucked. Our OL is better, but has a long way to go. Where was our supposedly all-world lineman from Florida, Seymore? We are headed for another 2-10 if Taj is our QB, he has not improved his passing. No passing that stretched the D. Where was Adams?  Without a running game we were too easy to defend, especially by one of the country's best D's. There is reason for hope since we started with the best team in the country, but don't buy into the thought that we will excel against the MAC. We have too many weaknesses to address. We have a shot at 4-8. Solve our problems (OL, QB, RB, Special teams) and we can go 5-7 or 6-6.

I didn't get to watch much of the game but we did seem to hang with OSU for at least 3 quarters or so. It's encouraging yes. But I feel like this happens every season that I've been a Zips fan. We hang tough against the big boys, but can't deal the deal. Then have a mediocre run in MAC play.

Not trying to be a doomer, because I want to be excited. Just feels like we really don't know our team until we start conference play.

If Finley is hurt for any length of time, just go with Roggow.  Tajh is only useful in the two QB set (which may legitimately work OK against lesser competition, based on what we saw today).

So how about some strategy for this game? I think the only question is will we cover  the 50.5 spread? In my opinion the Zips will really struggle to run the ball so Joe will attempt a lot of quick, short passes to avoid sacks. Hopefully most of these don’t hit the ground and the clock keeps running while picking up some first downs. I just can’t see them scoring on this defense unless it’s a busted play. Hoping for a few stops and/or turnovers on defense while the Buckeyes offense gets untracked. Zips get a late field goal to make the final score 52-3. Take the Zips plus the points! Just hoping we come out healthy for week 2.

Well, I think I pretty much nailed this prediction, missed it by one field goal. Having said that, the game was different. I thought OSU would get out to a quick 35-0 lead and win on a first round TKO, that didn’t happen. I thought the Zips played really well. The defense looks really solid. Even some of the Buckeyes big pass completions were just great plays on some good pass coverage. Offense struggled but hard to really get a gage on them while playing against one of the best defenses in the country. Overall, I saw a lot of good signs of progress. They need to battle against Rutgers. This needs to be a close game. Go Zips!

Here's hoping that Finley is not substantially hurt and doesn't have PTSD from that experience.  You could see how he got more and more concerned with the rush as the game wore on. Hopefully, his "happy feet" was a situational thing rather than something he'll have to continue to deal with as he missed some potential big plays by bailing out quickly when he felt pressure.

17-3 at the half, trucking along pretty good until they wiped out our #1 qb. For the first time in my memory we weren’t humiliated against a top 10 program.

The two QB set looked janky against a top 10 juggernaut. Let’s play Rutgers straight up and if Finley is ready bring back the new twist against Colgate and get the bugs worked out. Then move on from there. In the back of my mind it’s a gimmick until proven otherwise.

Overall I’m more excited about the program than I have been in quite awhile. Gotta go do family stuff, will have more later.

Like many others, feel score wasn’t really indicative of how the game when. Obviously OSU had us over matched at every position, and the longer you play the worse the score differential will be. Proud of how our guys fought, and we don’t see to be too beat up, aside from Finley which is probably the most important position on the team.  Dude has to have some serious shoulder bruising and perhaps a broken rib. It still pisses me off that we scheduled this game. I thought Bullock looked better, but still not a downfield thrower.

nice to see Bobby Golden make some guys miss, and some other hs guys like Dall, Murphy, and White make some meaningful plays.

biggest weakness looked like RT (and oline in general). Lot of moving parts there and unfortunately I think dealing with injuries from camp. Hope we can settle in on core starters by the time conference play starts. With all the new pieces, understandable need to have some time to figure out best combinations, but I’m about over this being an annual process.

I was able to go back and rewatch on YouTube TV. I didn’t give Greenwood enough credit. He may not be the biggest or fastest safety, but he was really good Saturday.

I also got Hunter and DeWalt mixed up. I do still think Hunter will be a good player. However, DeWalt has excellent size and has the physicality to help us this year.

I also noticed Spriggs on second watch. He may not have always known what he was doing, but he’s fast and will hit. He’s another guy to watch as he continues to develop.

I think there are a lot of positives to take from the game, but having trouble not letting our QB situation over shadow it all. Finley was looking rough. Taj does look improved (and i liked how the staff was using them together), but don’t think the downfield passing is there yet.

It does overshadow everything.  If Finley isn't back and Brayden Roggow isn't able to play at a high level (Tahj is what he is), Akron isn't beating anyone on their schedule, and that OSU money will be overshadowed by the team drawing 1300 fans again for late season games because...who wants to see a 0-10 MAC team with no hope (again) on a Tuesday?

Honestly, I feel that's tough to judge at this stage. We likely won't face another pass rush remotely as talented as OSU the rest of the season. We couldn't really judge the downfield passing because frankly Finley was getting lit up while waiting for the play to develop. If we see the same struggle against a good, but not great, Rutgers squad then I'll agree.

How do you know if Tahj can’t throw down the field it’s only week 1 😂 give the kid a shot to show what he can do Especially vs Rutgers Tahj basically dominated every Jersey Kid on that Rutgers team when he was in HS and will vs them now I like the Finley kid but his body is not built to take hits especially on RPOs Tahj body is built for hits even tho no QB wanna get hit at the end of the day
