Then why have the player's name on the back of the jersey? Blatant focus on the individual as far as I'm concerned. I remain extremely worried how we will ever win on the road, with the opponent's scoreboard keeping running tallies of our players points and fouls. And, what if a member of True Blue yells out "HEY DUVIVIER...YOU HAVE 9 POINTS AND THREE FOULS!!" while we're at Buffalo? Crap...we're doomed. It does give me a deeper appreciation for Keith Dambrot, who won 87 percent of the games he coached at the JAR despite having the player's points and fouls being displayed at both ends of the floor. The guy was a miracle worker.4 points

The last time I did that, Alcorn had just kicked the 57 yard field goal to beat Toledo in 1992, our first game as a MAC member, in front of packed Rubber Bowl for an Acme/Zip game. I was drunk, and fell over the concrete wall, with no regard for personal injury. I'm 25 years older now. No friggin way.2 points

This is the basically the audio to the robocall last night. There is going to some sort of weather in NEO in late November. For the rest of your life. If that's your excuse, you weren't going in the first place. It's going to be 45 degrees and cloudy with a chance of light rain? That sounds like one of the better forecasts I've seen for a late November game. Good news, it will be 70 degrees and dry on December 2nd for those Zips fans that can't watch your team win the MAC east in 45 degree weather.2 points

The boards are for fans. I can go to my high school alma mater and see the players points on the scoreboard. I get it, just think it's lame with the new shiny toys we have in the JAR now.2 points

Hello Zips Nation, I am first and foremost an Illinois Fighting Illini basketball fan. However, I am still a believer in John Groce, the man and the coach. In all of my time following sports I have never seen anyone or any team experience such lousy breaks as he had here. And through it all he fought with grit and grace. You have a decent man running your program. You will never have to worry about NCAA violations and his family is an asset to any community. You also have a fighter who will have your teams playing their best basketball at the end of the year when it matters. I am personally frustrated because I didn't get to see his vision come together so I have decided to adopt Akron if you will allow me. I know absolutely nothing of the MAC Conference and even less about Akron basketball, but I intend to learn. I can share my experience watching the Groce system for 5 seasons for those with questions, but remember I am just a fan like yourselves. Go Zips!!2 points

I love the Roo scary eyes. That is so different and wonderfully scary-looking. We can't seem to make a cyclone look scary, but you do it with a kangaroo. Score one for the Zips.1 point

Heres a little insight on weather forecasting. It is very rare that a meteorologist is incorrect on their forecast of precipitation. For those interested to know, an example of how forecasting the percentage of precipitation works. As of now I am seeing 40% chance of rain at 8pm this evening during the game. That percentage doesn’t mean there is a 40% chance that it will rain. It actually means that in the area, in this case Akron, there is a 100% chance that 40% of the Akron area will see some form of precipitation. So basically the percentage that is given is the area that will see the precipitation not the percentage that it will rain.1 point

Ehhh.....2 personal fouls get you kicked out and 1 targeting penalty gets you kicked out IIRC.1 point

Yeah. For me it's not so much of this being that big of a deal, but an overall continuation of athletics continually shooting themselves in the foot. New scoreboards? Let's use standard definition video and not show player stats. Brilliant!1 point

If we want to get out by 11:15 we need to boo the guy in the red hat that comes on the field and stays there until the TV timeout is over....GET HIM!!!!1 point

I think there is a lot of truth in this post. Groce never struck me as a person who is a climber for fame and fortune sake. I really believe he would have been happy at Illinois for a long time because he had all the resources necessarily to achieve his life goals, personally and professionally. Maybe an opening at Indiana or Ohio State would have tempted him at some point, but he primarily wants to win the NCAA Tourney like everybody else. He learned some valuable lessons at Illinois, no doubt. Some due to poor judgement, but I would argue he learned far more about building a program and competing for elite talent in an unethical and impatient business. I'm sure Coach Groce has even said at his meet-and-greets that he feels blessed to be able to continue doing the job he loves and that he found a great home at the University of Akron. But I don't believe for a moment that he has lost sight of that NCAA Championship dream. Groce is wired to compete on the biggest stage. And this might surprise you, but that actually bodes well for Akron basketball. If the support from fans and the administration matches what will hopefully be great success on the court, you just might become the next Gonzaga.1 point

Are you insane In that scenario, we've gotta stay to the end to celebrate these guys taking their destiny into their hands and seizing their opportunity to get to the MACC game Boo the man wanting to leave early to stave off frostbite!! Thanks for the info, @RowdyZip I think, in the grand scheme of things, after the top 30 - 35 or so teams is there any one person, one ranking outlet that really knows enough about all of the teams to place them in order. After the top 1/4 of the FBS, I believe rankings have as much to do with perception and recency bias as they do with actual team performance and ability. Shifting the perception of a program takes time; and wining. And more time. And then a few more big wins! Go ZIPS!!1 point

It's definitely been done before. A few years ago Kent State had a "no stats" approach on their scoreboards. I don't recall if it was Ford or Senderoff, but one of them decided it would help a struggling offense. Wonder if Groce did this at OU or Illinois too? Honestly I'm okay with whatever the coaches think will work best.1 point

Accuweather now says <20% chance of rain during game hours, rain moving in at 10pm or later. We might stay dry, but it may scare a few folks off from showing up, and we need all we can get.1 point

Our main rival is K.ent State. Kent is a suburb northeast of downtown Akron. It takes less than 15-minutes to get from UA to KSU. Though K.ent calls themselves the Golden Flashes, their mascot is an eagle-looking bird. The above picture is a dead flash. Lol1 point

Fantastic Post! I pulled this part out because it's something I don't think we have talked in depth about here on ZNO. At the beginning of the season there was a doom-and-gloom contingency (rightfully so starting 1-3, and squeaking out a win vs. BGSU), and a lot of people were seeing a lack of talent. As this season has progressed, we've seen players develop and get better game-to-game. And for once, in a long time, younger players are emerging in Key Roles...Alvin Davis, Kobie Booker, Kato Nelson. And a lot of our upperclassmen that we've seen making plays this year, Featherstone, Kwad Smith, are coming back next year. I think we're headed in the right direction. And it feels good to say that.1 point

Here I go being the pessimist again. We need to win Tuesday. Per the current count: 70 Bowl Eligible Teams, 23 teams could still gain eligibility. This week there are 4 games that feature two 5-win teams: Purdue/Indiana, ODU/MTSU, Cal/UCLA, and Utah/Colorado. That puts the total at 74. Chances are that either FSU (beat Florida and ULM ) or Florida (beat FSU) will fill another spot. There are 13 more teams that could possibly vie for those last 3 spots (ESPN odds of winning): **Louisiana vs GASO (63.6%), @App St (14.1%) *NM St vs Idaho (73.1%), vs South Alabama (70.8%) Louisiana Tech vs UTSA (44.6%) UNLV @ Nevada (40.3%) Florida vs FSU (36.2%) Temple @ Tulsa (35.6%) Duke @ Wake Forest (30.2%) Buffalo vs OU (30%) Tulane @ SMU (27.8%) *Florida State @Florida (63.8%), vs ULM (96.3%) Texas Tech @Texas (25.4%) Georgia Tech vs UGA (21.3%) Ole Miss @ Miss St (13.0%) Minnesota vs Wisconsin (10.6%) *UL Monroe vs Ark St (32.7%), @FSU (3.7%) *-two games remaining, needs two wins **-two games remaining, needs one win We're a couple upsets away from a 6-6 team staying home. I don't want to see Akron be that team.1 point

I watched this game at a trendy taco bar in downtown Los Angeles (what a terrible sports town, by the way). Nelson was great. Unbelievable to imagine that we could have another 3 years with him at the helm. There were a couple times where he moved in the pocket to either make a throw or scramble for positive yardage where I believe Woodson would have been sacked. Those little things were enough to be a difference in the game. The defense got some big turnovers and generally played well. It amazes me that we had the same teams on the field at Miami and versus Ohio. The inconsistency is frustrating, but overall we are having an tremendous season. I honestly didn't think it would turn out this way, so I am happy to eat a huge plate of crow. I think this season will propel the staff to another solid recruiting class and the progrum will be on its way to where we all expected to be a few years sooner. MACC! and of course, it's 1:30PM EST and ...1 point
