GET ARTH OUT OF HERE NOW!!! We just got pounded by the former worst team https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-rankings-colorado-washington-state-join-the-bottom-25-as-ohio-takes-over-no-1-spot/ A couple of years ago we had Jim Tressell, Terry Bowden, Jim Dennison and Chuck Amato on campus. A school having financial challenges lets them all leave and BUYS OUT Bowden for THIS!!! The incompetence of the board is UNF@#ingbelievable!!4 points

This team is a train wreck. The coaching is worse. Example: Before the half 1:15 on your own 30. Up 10-3. How do you allow Ohio to get the ball back?? Once the negative play happens on 1st down it's over. Get to half. But no, we allow Ohio to get the ball and score with 9 secs left. That is coaching. This offense is NOT going to score with this QB run 1st mentality. Yes DJ is dynamic, but it's not sustainable. Defensively, NOT one noticeable adjustment. Stop the frigging run, make 18 throw. They didn't have to because we were in base defense the entire 2nd half. Terrible coaching. Seen 3 years of the same script. Something has to change.3 points

Nope I won't lay off on folks who basically hoped for crap to turn to sugar Nope I wont forget about folks who called me out for basically easily predicting the end result of a crap hire I TOLD YOU SO3 points

That looked like one coaching staff that diligently worked at half to make adjustments and one staff that went to the concession stand. So who wants to start the Go Fund Me page for the buyout? No way that a school with the financial issues of UA is buying him out. As I have said before, it is possible to be both anti-Bowden and anti-Arth.3 points

Folks really believed a coach that went 9-13 at Chattanooga could turn this program around #Privilege3 points

If you want to look for some glimmer of hope, it's 40 miles north. It took the NFL franchise >25 years to finally find a man who could put it all together and run a no-nonsense gameplan. And a scouting director and GM who knew real talent from flashes and could-a-beens. HOLY CRAP we've been through some awful football in NEOhio...2 points

They need to take the big payday from the Tennessee game and pay this bum off. Do it now. Name an interim coach. Anybody they name couldn't do a worse job than Arf. Then start a real search for a real HC.2 points

I remember vividly people being run off this forum for not only stating it was a bad move to fire Bowden with 2-years on his contract, and buying out Arth from the remainder of his contract, for a coach who was 9-13...there are people GONE from this forum because people ridiculed them for stating the obvious. "Hope" doesn't improve football programs.. Smart and strategic long-term planning does. Firing Bowden for Tom Arth (a not even high-upside risk) was hitting the reset button twice over.2 points

https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings/college-rankings/ncaa-di-men/ In the United Soccer coaches poll, the West Virginia moved up to #3 in this week's rankings (they were #4 last week) One of the 24 coaches voting...voted West Virginia as #1. The Zips dropped from #20 in last week's ranking.....to #26 The soccer coaches rate the Zips as the 3rd best team in the MAC. Bowling Green is 7-1-1 and stayed at #17 in the weekly rankings. To side track for just a second...it is interesting to look at some big name schools that are not in the top 25. Indiana is #30 ; North Carolina is #31 ; Stanford is #34 ; Wake Forest is #40 Getting back to West Virginia West Virginia is 6-0-2......and is a team that is fully capable of reaching the college cup in December I think that it is safe to say (that if you exclude Akron teams), this is the best MAC team in the past 15 years This is the toughest MAC season opener that any Zip team has ever faced. West Virginia began this season with a huge chip on their shoulder. West Virginia deserved a berth in last year's NCAA tourney. They had a regular season win over eventual NCAA champion Marshall and they thoroughly destroyed at large selection Charlotte 3-0. West Virginia ended the year around #15 in RPI. West Virginia deserved to be in last spring's NCAA tourney West Virginia did not receive one top 25 vote in the preseason coaches poll. WVA is 6-0-2 they started the year with a 2-0 win over Robert Morris. In their 2nd game, they hosted then #3 rated Pitt. WVU came away with a 2-1 win 3rd game, they hosted then #17 ranked Penn State. WVU won that game 3-1 On Labor day, they hosted Loyola (MD). That game ended 0-0 5th game, they hosted the Ohio State Buckeyes. WVU added another shutout in a 1-0 win they then travelled to #6 Marshall. After 110 minutes, it was a 2-2 result On Sept. 21, they hosted Dayton and WVU won 3-0 On Sept. 25, they hosted St. Bonaventure and WVU dominated in a 4-0 win. in 5 of their 8 games, they have shutout their opponent. They have only allowed goals to Pitt, Penn State, and Marshall. (2 of those 3 teams were ranked in the top 6, other team was ranked #17) 17 goals scores in 8 games. Only 4 goals allowed. West Virginia coach Dan Stratford is one of the great young soccer coaches in the game https://wvusports.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/coaches/dan-stratford/3999 3 years at the University of Charleston (WV) - 61-4-5 record....Division II national champion in 2 out of 3 years This is his 2nd season as WVU coach. This is a team with great depth. 11 different players have scored goals for them. Yoran Popovic leads them with 3 goals. Frederik Jorgenson has 2 goals and 2 assists. Kevin Morris has 2 goals and 1 assist. Pau Jimenez Abelda has 1 goal and 3 assists. The zips will have to get off to a quick start in this game. In the past 2 games, Malik Henry has been fantastic early on and put the ball on a forwards foot in the first 5 minutes of both games. In both games, the zips striker did not convert. To use a Jared Embick term, the zips need to be very clinical and put the ball in the net early in the game. The zips were not at full strength - player wise against Yale. Hopefully, all of the backline players are back healthy. The zips have proven that they can compete with Indiana and Pitt. West Virginia is every bit as good....possibly better than last year's college cup teams. The zips can get a win......But they need to regain their confidence....BE CLINICAL early in the game. Huge Challenge for a young team. Go, Zips !!!1 point

I don't think it's it is as simple as making the right coaching hire. Akron has to change. I am not sure that the U has the will or means to do that. In addition to proper X"s and O's skills, 1. He has to understand that the job involves the public and the need to raise money. Tom Arth didn't seem to u derstand this part of his job. 2. The right connections to get quality assistants and recruits referred to them. Tom Arth did not have those. 3. He has to be a motivator.1 point

About equally sad, if he was 9-13 since arriving in Akron, he would have already received a contract extension.1 point

The Athletic Director for each hire was not the same, but some of the assistants were. UA Athletic Department staff who were involved in the hiring of iCoach and Arth should not be allowed to participate in the next one.1 point

The Zips were #125/130 and lost by 17 points to #126. #127 New Mexico State lost by only 6 to San Jose State. #128 UNLV last by only seven to unbeaten USTA. #129 UMass got killed by Toledo. #130 UConn lost by 2 to Vandy. UConn and UMass play next week. The Zips will be at #129 or #130 soon. These are the CBS rankings. A similarly situated program and one that embarrassingly lost to this team las year, BG, had a defining win at Minnesota last week and were competitive against PCCC in the MAC opener yesterday. They hired a guy nearly a month ahead of Arth who was a D1 OC at Auburn, Virginia Tech and Boston College. He cleaned out some of the bad character in the program, suffered a couple of years, used the transfer portal and it now up and running and making progress with the program.1 point

The obsession with defending Bowden is just weird. He's gone. Arth will be gone. Wistricill is gone. Wiliams is gone. Now it all falls onto Guthrie.1 point

Agree - with Bowden, you always felt there was a chance, because the Zips won games they had no business winning. Bowden had the team moving int he right direction until the admin changed. The difference, you have an amateur that can't cover for poor administration at the helm, now.1 point

Today we were the better team and still found a way to lose. The future of football is in Guthrie's hands and I believe he has made his decision. Arth will be gone before the end of the season so a search can be commenced at the earliest opportunity. The guarantee for the Tennessee game allows Guthrie the freedom to act and he knows he has a coach and staff that is prepared only to lose and cannot grow into competence. We will lose a year of recruiting, but that is a given whenever you change HC's. On the other hand a new coach will be smart enough to mine the transfer portal for talent. Guthrie and Miller know they can not wait another year for 1-11 to repeat itself. Arth may be a good man and I wish him well wherever he goes, but he must not remain our HC.1 point

There’s really not a ton to say about that game today. All I could do as the game was so obviously slipping away was laugh and say to me friends “do you have any idea how bad the team they’re about to lose to is?” Honestly, I don’t even care about Arth at this point. He very obviously wasn’t ready for this level and he just put his name in the bin and ended up getting paid. Good for you buddy. And good for all of your John Carroll buddies too. The football program is pathetic. Simple as that. 4-29 since beating Northwestern and nearly zero improvement in 3 seasons of this coaching staff. Every time this happens, the list of quality candidates diminishes more and more. Why would anyone worth a damn want to coach at Akron right now? Enrollment is plummeting, budget is plummeting, you’re starting at the very bottom with nothing to hang your hat on, it’s just pathetic. Meanwhile, Kent, which is a football graveyard in every sense of the term, is now 1-0 in MAC play as the preseason MAC East favorite after a win on homecoming day. That makes me want to pull my hair out. In the past, we could at least say they sucked too. They may not be the football gods they think they are, but they’re heads and shoulders better than Akron. And it’s a dump. That should pee everyone at Akron off. There are so many discussions to be had about this disaster. As used to bad football as I’ve become, it just keeps getting worse and worse as the time passes. I think a lot of us saw this coming but hoped like hell it wouldn’t and denied that it would. But here we are. 7 MAC games left, all against much better teams than that. Shameful. Disgraceful. Basketball can’t come soon enough. I love you, Coach Groce. Thank you giving us all hope in Akron and something to be excited about.1 point

I never had a problem with Bowden not being renewed, but as you point out, a cash strapped university cutting academic programs like crazy while BUYING OUT Bowden was the appalling part. All so we could hire iCoach 2.0. It really makes me wonder what UA could be post-Proenza with perfectly average hires in place of iCoach, Arth, Larry Williams, and Scarborough. Given UA's financial circumstances, Arth shouldn't be bought out either. Tell him he won't be renewed and hope he gets another job knowing what's coming. State it publicly if necessary; shame him into leaving. That gets us out of buying out his contract or having him hang around. That's the best outcome we can hope for.1 point

I had to stop after 90 seconds. To have a "presser," one must have a press. GT's non- question question was middle school newspaper club worthy material. Arth is smiling at the quality of the dumpster fire we have here in Akron. Unreal...1 point

Was at the game. Have been deliberately avoiding posting to see what might happen. Well, lets see. Irons is a definite improvement at qb. BUT...He while he runs with authority, he also tends to hold on to the ball too long. Some of that is because the O-line is bad at pass blocking. Its also because the WR's often have problems separating. But ,he missed an open receiver in the south end zone and then held the ball. What's going on with the running backs? The defense?! What kind of crap is that?! They can't tackle at the line of scrimmage. They just can't tackle. The line shows limited ability to rush the passer so the secondary gets hung out to dry. This is not an OU team that Solich coached. This one is not good enough to challenge in the MAC. Akron's defense is lacking in fundamentals. Not acceptable at this point. Thats coaching. Don't see any coaching changes this year. Nobody on that staff appears capable of taking over. Problem now is even next year how do you convince a decent HC prospect to come in here? Yes, and I was one who thought it was time for TB to go. But, didn't foresee them hiring someone who really appears in over his head. With the experience Arth had, would have thought he would be more competent. This is sad.1 point

I am not faulting the coaching staff for this situation. Not too long ago, we had Gest, Dollard, Williams, and Norrils. I thought we were loaded at that position short and long term.1 point

Agreed it was time to move on from Bowden and obviously Arth was not the right choice. I don’t think we can afford not to make a change now (buyout or not). We can’t dig this hole even further by giving it another year.1 point

I look at them as two separate decisions: one was appropriate and the other was horrible. The awfulness of the second decision doesn't mean the first decision was bad as well.1 point

That game was definitely the nail in the coffin for me. Barring a complete turnaround, they must buy out Arth and go in another direction. Zero results in year three and not much talent in the pipeline. Normally, one would be concerned with talent leaving the program with s departing coach. Not much there to worry about.1 point

Sadly, I'm not even disappointed. The game was actually a lot closer than I even expected it would be. I just don't really care about this anymore. It's just not worth it. Looking forward to basketball season.1 point

Incredibly difficult to win any lawsuit in the court of claims. That's the point of it. That being said, the lawsuit was spurious but the incident ridded the Zips of Gueye and KLac in one fell swoop.1 point

I think this will prove to be spot-freaking-on. The depth on this team is pretty incredible, considering the state of the program when Groce took over. Being able to bring Wynn, Tribble, Clarke, and Bandaogo off the bench is massive - that's two guards and a winger with solid size and experience. I think Castaneda will be the key to the team's success this year. We needed someone to replace LCJ as the floor general, and from what I've seen out of Castaneda, he's the perfect guy to do it. Biggest questions for me... 1) Does Freeman replicate last year's unbelievable individual production? 2) Do we get much-needed outside scoring from either of the incoming freshman guards - Johnson and/or Mitchell? 3) What seed will we be in the NCAA Tournament?1 point

Just an update. Kostelac vs. U of A in the Ohio Court of Claims concluded in July with the University being awarded summary judgment on Kostelac's claims. Essentially, the Court found that the University did not breach its duty of reasonable care to protect Kostelac from an unreasonable risk of physical harm of which it knew or had reason to know, because Gueye's criminal act of assaulting Kostelac was unforeseeable.1 point

Really have been out of the loop. Just looked at the tournament we're in and I'm pretty disappointed. Those are the type of teams we could be scheduling outside of tournaments. I really prefer tournaments that give us a chance to pick up quality wins on a neutral court. It's really challenging to beat Louisville, OSU, West Virginia's of the world when you have to play them at their home court.1 point

Have had the opportunity to meet both Coach Parry and Coach Porter. In fact attended the same church as Stu. They are two of the classiest people in the world not to mention being outstanding soccer coaches. Have not met Coach Embick to date but he's in a great coaching tree.1 point

An opportunity was missed by our AD by not being at this game. I can assure you OSU took it seriously and so did their administration. Christine Johnson, the president of OSU, was in attendance. There was a lot on the line. Guthrie needs to seize every chance he gets to network with big, influential athletic depts if we want to grow. Kudos to Jared for calling our poor play exactly that. We were sh*tty. Contrast that to Arth's presser in which he sugar coats incompetence and wastes time on OU-Duquesne. What about addressing our issues starting with QB and DL? I think he doesn't talk about those issues, and others, because he doesn't have an answer.1 point

I’m very disappointed in our new Athletic Director and his Deputy. In the past, UA has often sent a bus load of Rowdies to Mens soccer matches at Ohio State creating a great atmosphere on the road. No, not tonight. Don’t tell me it didn’t happen because of Covid. They’re sending a bus on the 25th to see a completely lopsided grid iron game at Ohio Stadium. Also, I didn’t see the AD or his Deputy in attendance tonight. I saw Caleb Porter, Darlington Nagbe, Perry Kitchen, Evan Bush, Blair Gavin, Chad Barson, and the founder of our Men’s Soccer Program, Stu Parry. In fact, Caleb has so much respect for our program he made sure to catch up with Stu Parry and took a picture with Stu and Bill Parry. Caleb, Darlington, Perry, Evan, Blair, and Chad were all very gracious to the Zips fans in attendance taking time to reminisce with us and talk about current happenings in their and our lives. Our AD and his Deputy missed a great opportunity to meet some key people from our prestigious Men’s Soccer Program and current coach, staff and players of the Columbus Crew. Heck, I think one of the OSU sports facility staff with whom we talked prior to the game knew more about our program than our Athletics Department leadership. Come on Charlie and Marcus. Soccer may not be your thing, but Zips Mens Soccer is the most successful program in your department as you should be able to tell from the banners at First Energy Stadium Cub Cadet Field. Soccer continues to grow in popularity in the USA. You’re doing better than the previous AD, but time to get yourselves out to more than hopeless grid iron games and to use some of those pay outs from Auburn and OSU to help some of our sports other than grid iron.1 point
