A friend of mine is a financial planner. He submitted a 30 day notice to leave for another job (customary notice in his industry). He was due a bonus at the end of his term. The employer told him he was free to leave immediately. He said "Ok. I still get my bonus, right?" The employer said "no." So my friend decided he was going to stay the entire 30 days. His new employer wasn't expecting him to start for a month anyhow. The old employer subsequently stuck him in a warehouse with a card table for 30 days. My friend dutifully sat at his card table in the warehouse for 30 days, and ultimately got his bonus. I feel Guthrie is treating Moorhead is a similar manner. If/when Moorhead departs, be very scared of the next coach Guthrie hires. It has a very good chance of being much, much worse. The uneducated person with say "How can it be worse...Joe's only winning 2 games per year?" Trust me, it can.7 points

The season opener is now less than a month away. The Zips will head to Jonesboro, Arkansas on November 4th to face the Arkansas State Red Wolves in the MAC/SBC Challenge. The Red Wolves are led by head coach Brian Hodgson. As @Let'sGoZips94 previously mentioned, Hodgson’s prior experience includes being an assistant for Oates at Buffalo and Alabama. In his first year at Arkansas State, he took the Red Wolves to a fourth place finish in the Sun Belt Conference after being slotted as the ninth team in the pre-season poll. They also made it to the third round of the CBI. They have been predicted to win the conference this year by Mid Major Madness. The Red Wolves return a number of major contributors from last year’s squad. Second leading scorer, 6’4” Senior guard Taryn Todd averaged 12.8 ppg and is joined in the backcourt by the team’s fourth leading scorer 6’3” junior guard Derrian Ford who averaged 10.4 ppg. Leading rebounder, 6’10” forward Izaiyah Nelson, who averaged 9.8 ppg and 7.6 rpg also returns. UMass transfer Dyondre Dominguez, a 6’8” forward, will be in his second year with the team and contributed 10.3 ppg and 5.8 rpg last year. The Red Wolves were also successful in the portal, bringing in the Sun Belt’s leading scorer from last year, 6-6 senior forward Kobe Julien, from Louisiana where he was named to the All Sun Belt second team. They also added Arkansas transfer Joseph Pinion, a 6’5” junior guard and Ole Miss transfer Rashaud Marshall, a 6’8” forward. This is one heck of an opener for our Zips as new members settle in. I’ll update as more preseason previews are released.5 points

Game thread and preview. QB: Hayden Wolff is in his second season with WMU and is currently completing close to 70% of his passes for 907 yards. He has thrown for 7 TDs vs 2 INTs. Wolff has been able to complete 75% of his passes when not pressured. When pressured, that number drops to 53%. RB: The Broncos have two excellent backs in Oklahoma State transfer Jaden Nixon and senior Zahir Abdul-Salaam. 2023 All-MAC RB Jalen Buckley is being slowly incorporated back into the lineup from injury. Nixon is 2nd in the MAC with 484 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. Abdul-Salaam is 10th in the MAC with 225 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. WR: Senior Anthony Sambucci has been the go-to target at WR. He has 22 receptions for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior Kenneth Wommack has gotten involved in the past two games and has 13 receptions for 111 yards. TE: Junior Blake Bosma is usually good for at least a few catches per game. He has 15 receptions for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. OL: The OL is a veteran group that can be a punishing tandem with the RBs. They have also done a solid job of keeping Wolff upright this season. LT - Tedi Kushi (R. Sr.) LG - John Hofer (R. Jr.) C - Jacob Gideon (Sr.) RG - Addison West (R. Sr.) RT - Jack Sherwin (R. Sr.) DL: Junior Tyson Lee is a starter at one DE spot, while junior Corey Walker will likely start on the opposite side. Lee has 9 tackles and a sack. Walker has 10 tackles and 3 sacks. Iowa transfer Anterio Thompson and junior Mason Nelson start on the interior. Thompson has 15 tackles. Nelson has 13 tackles and 2 sacks. LB: Senior Donald Willis is having an All-MAC caliber season and is 7th with 43 tackles. His running mate is Jacob Wahlberg who has 28 tackles and a sack. DB: Senior cornerback Bilal Kone (we also offered in the 2023 portal cycle) is also having an All-MAC caliber season. Kone has 29 tackles and 5 PDs. Opposite Kone will likely be Tennessee Tech transfer Nyquann Washington. Washington has 9 tackles and 3 PDs. Senior Damari Robinson is the NB. He has 18 tackles and 2 PDs. Senior Tate Hallock starts at one safety spot, while junior Aaron Wolford starts at the other. Hallock has collected 31 tackles, 2 PDs, and 1 INT. Wolford has 21 tackles and 1 INT. K: WMU has utilized two kickers so far, but Butler transfer Luka Zurak has gotten most of the action. He is 4 of 5 on FGs and 16 of 16 on XPs. P: Redshirt freshman Ryan Millmore is averaging 43.1 yards per punt with 9 downed inside the 20 yard line. KR: RB Jaden Nixon is the main return man and is averaging 19.1 yards per return with a long of 27 yards. Breakdown: Offense - WMU’s bread and butter is running the football. The passing game is effective when the running game is humming. Wolff is not fleet of foot and can be limited by a pass rush and lack of run game. However, when he has time, Wolff can pick apart a defense. Defense - WMU’s defense has been hit or miss. They were soft against a not so good Ball State offense, but were much better the game before against Marshall. Akron and WMU are very similar in terms of defensive statistics, except WMU has only managed to create 5 turnovers thus far. Summary: This is absolutely a winnable game as these two teams seem evenly matched. It will likely come down to coaching and special teams play. WMU has had issues with their special teams coverage, so that could be an area where Zips gain an advantage on field position. If Akron can pull out a victory here, then go into the bye week and get some more players healthy, the back half of the season could get interesting.4 points

My son attended one of those snooty east coast universities. The school in question focuses on top notch D1 basketball (and has been bad at it in recent years) while sending their football team off to compete in the Patriot League. While I know many in here would oppose such a move, with the changing face of college sports and the continued misery of this football program, such a switch is looking more and more like an alternative.3 points

A small thing that bothers me, I think the team needs to go to the band with the cheerleaders for the alma matter after a game win or lose.3 points

If there has ever been a football team that needs a Fullback or if JOMO would play two Tight Ends - it is this one. Ben Finley looks like the best true QB that we have had in 20 years. All Ben needs is time and a FB or an extra TE would assist with the pass protection and the running game. Also, Jordon Simmons needs 20 or more touches per game!3 points

Embick calling out "the freshman left back substitute" in his Temple post game comments....was very unprofessional. It showed very poor judgement by Embick. Other players (some of them an early season co-captain) gave up goals in several games earlier in the year and they were not targeted by Embick in the post match comments. One former zip player (time frame before 2000) called Embick's Temple press conference comments "reprehensible." Being a freshman athlete is very hard. Trying to balance schoolwork and athletics. Being away from home for a significant amount of time. Criticism of a freshman athlete should be done in the privacy of a locker room. It should not be done publicly when the coach is frustrated by poor results. James Buebendorf was a highly ranked recruit and I very much want him to succeed at the University of Akron.3 points

https://gozips.com/news/2024/10/4/cross-country-school-record-time-highlights-akrons-efforts-at-joe-piane-notre-dame-invite The 2024 men's XC team looks promising after losing the team's coach and top two runners from the 2023 MAC Championship team. Two of the newest runners just ran sub-24:00 in the 8K race in South Bend. Zips are within striking distance of Miami, EMU, etc. MAC championship should be interesting on November 2 in Muncie, Indiana.2 points

At this point I kind of want to just wait and see what happens. It seems we’re headed for a separate G6 league. If that’s the case, I would want to be all in on spending to compete in that league. For now, there is zero chance a team like Akron can compete in FBS, but I also don’t want to see us drop down to FCS and admit we’re as small-time as YSU. Whether we are or not is a different debate.2 points

At 2-10, worse is 1-11 or 0-12 (sorry for being pedantic), and as a long-time fan and UA alumnus I don't feel the difference in those degrees of failure. Worse could also mean dropping the program outright, which is something that many G5 programs on the bottom of the NIL-Portal tidal wave will have to consider in the near future. Given the choice, I would prefer no team to annual failure ("worse" than 2-10 as you indicate). Many universities survive without football - some never had it and many dropped it for financial reasons. I do not know anything about UA's AD; I still hope that he and the new UA President will make future decisions to benefit UA and not to accept the undesirable status quo.2 points

Good- only 2 penalties Bad - 3rd down D Good - 2nd half o line/Finley's footwork Bad- 1st half o line Good - punter/kicker Bad - shanked punt The team took a step in the right direction but it's still not enough. Coach's frustration during the post-game was noticeable. I feel for the TE but man does that sum up this team.2 points

Intense practice. Tavari looked good. Josiah Smith Harris looks like he'll be our leading scorer. Skilled & definitely looks like he has a scorer's mentality. Seth Wilson is built like a bull.2 points

One thing you can always count on from the members of sports message boards is Monday morning quarterbacking. I think on the subject of the relationship between the athletic department and Joe Moorhead we lead the league.1 point

I can tell we are on different sides of this conversation, so no need to continue it, however I can tell you from first hand knowledge, a lot of players are looking for that kind of tradition and connection. Especially those that understand that they are not going pro.1 point

Those are all for the fans and students. The players don't care anymore. I wish I was wrong.1 point

Not meant to get off topic but what was really infuriating about that Ianello hire was that Akron was booming at the time. Enrollment was up, new stadium, relatively new fieldhouse, Akron's athletic budget was near the top of the MAC. We then decided to cheap out on what was the most important factor to success for a college program, the coach. I'm in the camp that doesn't think we should fire Moorhead as we can't afford it. Also, who out there could you get that you confidently believe could turn Akron into a winner? I don't necessarily think Moorhead is a bad coach. He might have been a great coach for us 15 years ago when we had an adequately funded program and bright spots to sell recruits. It's much tougher to win at Akron now as the stadium has lost that new car smell, the budget has been gutted, and apathy has set in. I'm not sure Moorhead has it in him to overcome the challenges.1 point

1st half, more of the same. 2nd half might have been our best half of offense against FBS competition this year. Still need to clean up some inexcusable stuff, but in spite of that, its really just coming out behind on 3-4 plays a game. Catch the touchdown pass at the end, don't shank the punt. Doesn't feel like there's that big of a gap from where we are to being at least an average program.1 point

Thanks whatever coaches’ family member you are. Happy you’re standing up for your relatives. It’s awesome to win a few games. Not arguing with that but relying on Mitch Budler to stand on his head every game as well as team saves is not going to lead to post season success. Not likely to go far post season playing like this. But please continue being drunk on a few W’s. 🤪 Pro teams, including the beloved Arsenal, use more subs than the Zips.1 point

Very fun practice to go to. my biggest take away was although the new players are shinny new and have good resumes. I think the core of Tavari, Scott and Amani will be major players and all have improved a lot. (Nate Johnson did not play) Isaiah Gray and Seth Wilson look like grown men that will be bigger and stronger then anyone they guard. Like eye popping big. my biggest surprise was Eric Mahaffey. I think he grew this summer. Hit shots and looked like he will play. Was running with the core of Tavari, Wilson, Harris. Which I thought had starting back court vibes. my most excited player going into the practice was Sharron young. He was as advertised. Might not start but by March could be our best player. Can shoot, pass, and is a pesky defender. my prediction for the opening night starting line up is: Tavari Johnson Seth Wilson Nate Johnson Josiah Harris James Okonkwo1 point

You fire Jim Dennison for Gerry Faust (after 8 win season and going to 1aa playoffs) You fire JD Brookhart for Rob Ianello (while opening a brand new stadium.....iCoach, really?) You fire Terry Bowden for Tom Arth (Bowdens are CFB royalty.....Arth was 9-13 at UTChat) What do you expect!!!??? These have got to be three of the dumbest moves in the history of CFB and have SUNK Zips football!! Especially crazy moves from a school that cannot afford buyouts!!1 point
