Game 2- Southern Mississippi

I vote Nate Johnson just keeps doing the things he did tonight. Most of the guys, as a matter of fact, should keep doing what they did. Turnovers could continue to be an issue, but we’ve got quality depth.

Through 2 games, I think these guys still have a long way to go. But they are way ahead of schedule compared to this point last year.

The first 5 minutes seemed like deja vu, but this isn't last year's team.  last year they would have gone into halftime 8 or 9 down and needed a big run or a bunch of free throws to eat into the lead.  For a few moments i was like...gosh the Zips need Castaneda...but the power guys are making the points this year not the guards (even though the MAC is apparently a "guards" conference).

Great game and win. Still early, but if Nate Johnson really took this big of a step forward..sheesh!

Already mentioned, and I'm not one to jump in on all the gameday experience talk, but we gotta do better. Only the main concession stand open with 3 people working. One beer stand open. Getting anything was a nightmare.

The JAR has the worst concessions experience out of infocision and Cub Cadet. If they can afford to open 5 different stands for a football game with maybe double the amount of people here tonight, they should at least be able to open a third window when the line is back to the doors in the lobby

A couple of my friends went to buy concessions & 10 minutes later came back to the seats empty handed complaining that there was nothing but beer on the 2nd floor & down in the lobby the lines were 25 ppl deep w/ ppl cutting in line to boot.  pee poor job. What's up with that? It's like we realized 5 minutes before opening the JAR doors that, 'Oops, I guess we'll maybe need a concessions stand open tonight?'

Is Greg Tribble a threat from 3 this year????

Two games in and he's already doubled his 3-point count from last year!🤯 🤯😂

But seriously, wouldn't it be great if his defender had to respect his 3-point shot? That'd open a whole new world for Greg.

Simple formula ... win all games at home, split (or better) on the road. Zips are on target.

Tavari & Thornton both had rough games again last night.

Tavari doesn't yet really look like a D1 player & Thornton hasn't yet been able to provide the steadying veteran presence I was hoping he'd provide.

I thought we ran the O pretty smoothly when Shammah was doing a lot of the ball handling. Maybe we should give him a shot at the PG spot? He's played a lot of PG in the past & I love his defense.

I like to see Nate Johnson shooting 15 foot jumpers off the dribble.  He gets great height on his jumper and fades away from the basket.  Very difficult to defend.  They tripple teams Freeman in the first half and he passed to the open wing but we could not hit a 3 pointer in the beginning of the game.  We did not score in the first 5 minutes.  Great game.  We follow this up with Heidelberg?  Rediculous!!!

Yes, he reminds me of Deji a little bit of red shirt, and then growth every year to his game.  I could see him being all Mac his senior year, maybe next year as well?

I disagree.  Tavari did not shoot the ball well going 1 of 5 but in 20 minutes against a high pressure defense that forces a lot of turnovers he had 0 turnovers.  He also had 2 assists 3 rebounds and 2 steals.  I believe he sees the court better than any of our guards and can find the open man.   He will remain the point guard with those stats and I believe his shooting will improve based upon his stats from last year.

Good perspective. Good post.  (I'm out of 'likes.')

I too have been disappointed with Tavari so far this season, primarily after all the potential he showed scoring in OOC last year. Also seemed to me after a number of his misses, USM came down and hit a shot in his face.

Maybe I’m missing some of the smaller things.  He does seem to have good effort on defense and makes some nice passes. I left last night leaning with wanting Thornton to start for now. Regardless, still a big fan of Tavari’s overall potential. We’ve seen it.

SOOOOOO glad Michael Beaven now seems to be covering the Zips.  That indicates the ABJ is taking UA athletics much more seriously.  Hope they never send GT back.

He'd written a couple of Zips articles recently so I was hoping this was the way it was going.

Did Amani Lyles get any PT last night?

And I think I saw Groce put Ryan Prather into the game for a single free throw (not him shooting) and then pull him?  Hope Prather's able to offer us something sooner or later.

I was thinking the same thing, that I couldn't recall seeing Lyles and the box score confirmed my memory. He was in during a period of the SDSU game, and it was full of flaws. Not sure the speed is quite there, whether it's an athleticism issue, game speed issue, or both. I expect him and Prather to play 39 minutes vs. Heidelberg.

A USM fan from their Eaglepost Facebook page (in response to someone saying USM sucks)...

"No way, Akron is a surefire NCAA team, probably a sweet 16 team and an outside shot at the final four. There's no reason to be alarmed I mean we had it within one point with like 5 minutes to go. Plus we're still feeling the effects of the Tyndall era and all the scholarships we lost"

Two great matchups for the Zips to start the season.  With those two and then heading to a tourney, I have no problem going D3 in between.

This Zips team is incredibly athletic and deep.  When Ali gets back it only gets deeper.

My only goal for the next game against the 'Berg is a couple Wilson 3's.
