Game 3- Heidelberg

The Zips get to catch their breath after real challenges from South Dakota State and Southern Miss as Heidelberg visits the JAR this Tuesday night before the Zips head out onto the road for 4 games. Heidelberg does not yet have a game of record as I post this but are playing in a tournament this weekend.  They finished last season at 19-8, losing in their league semi-finals to Mount Union.

One of Heidelberg's leaders is Hoban grad Isaiah Young, a 6'2" junior guard.  Last year, he appeared and started in 27, led the team in assists, averaged a team-high 27.8 minutes per game, averaged 13.1 points per game and was second team All-OAC and Academic All-OAC

Wait, you’re telling me we decided against being the only good team in the country to not schedule a couple cupcakes??

Who is this Groce guy anyway. Weak schedules every year! Team never ready for March!

As a fan, are you looking forward to this game?

As a season ticket holder, is this game worth $30?

How many times have we played a weak team and played down to the level of competition?

How many on this board wish the football team was playing Heidelberg?

It'll cost me approximately $4.  It's a chance to work on things for the team.  I don't like these games but every team has them and it's a chance for a small school to play on a bigger stage (and Cedarville wasn't available).  I think it is a positive in some regard as the Zips are on the other end with football where their top competition asks "why are we playing this team?"

Yes, I look forward to all Zips games but it's not really about me.

Yes, I am looking forward to watching this team play basketball. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their enormous road win over South Dakota State, their exciting win over USM, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to watch them play again in just a few days. I’m not gonna whine and be bitter for no reason. Any other questions?

Not whining and not bitter.  Just stating my opinion.  I am a long time season ticket holder and have probably watched 50 of these games against division 2 or 3 teams especially under KD.  My preference as a fan is to watch better competition than Heidelberg.  If you disagree, so be it. With regard to scheduling, Groce is a great coach and obviously feels like this matchup helps the team.  As stated in my post, I just don't know how a team progresses when the level of competition is far below what you will be facing the following week.

That’s fine. I just wish Zips fans would have a little perspective is all. Every quality team in the country has a couple of teams like this on the schedule. It’s just how it works when trying to fill out a 13-game nonconference schedule. And there may be a time in a few years when we aren’t fortunate enough to be winning championships regularly and we beg to see the team win. Or we walk out of the JAR one Friday night not knowing we just watched the best Akron team we’ve ever seen play for the last time.

Enjoy what we have while we have it. What I would give to watch the 19-20 team play Heidelberg right now…

Anyone have any idea what's up with Darrion Baker?  I really think he could give us some productive big man minutes.  Sammy's just not physical enough to defend true big men.

Groce said on the post game he and Kamali elected to redshirt. He offered them limited minutes if they wanted them, but presented them the opportunity to redshirt. He left the decision to them, and they consulted Nate and made the decision.

I heard something similar on the post game show. Assuming we have quality eligible players, his thought process is that you're a lot better in your 5th year than you are in your first year, and you get an extra year of free education. Hard to argue with that. Just means we get a better Darrion Baker!

The downside of this is with the transfer portal now, having a player during the senior year becomes less likely. So there's an argument to be made to play the guys while you've got them. Luckily we haven't really been hampered by it yet, outside of Ali

Tru. I also don't understand why in football players can play up to 4 games (33% of the season) and still have their redshirt. And basketball per my understanding, where you play many more games, the redshirt is burned as soon as you play. Makes no sense to me.

Really, really hope this group of vets leaves an environment that the young bucks want to shoulder the burden to carry on. Meaning, after this year when Freeman/Tribble/Hunter/Ali are gone, there's a sense of pride in what is being built at Akron and there isn't an exodus by the talented guys like Baker, Nate, etc.
