The 10-6/4-0 Bobcats come to the JAR for a 6:00 game this Friday to face the Zips.

The Bobcats were predicted to win the MAC and return the most regular contributors of any MAC team this year.  We'll see a lot of familiar faces and they've added  6'8" Senior All-MAC forward AJ Clayton is back to lead the Bobcats at 16.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg.    6'2" junior guard Jackson Paveletzke has transferred in from Iowa State and is averaging 12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.7 assists.  6'4" Second Team All-MAC preseason team sophomore guard AJ Brown kicks in 11.8 ppg.

I used to root a little for Boals as he once worked for Keith but his sideline demeanor over the years has ruined that for me.

They are 4-0 in the MAC having beaten CMU, Buffalo, NIU, and Balls. First two on the road, last 2 at home. They are one of the top 3 offenses in the MAC and like to play a up-tempo style similar to Akron. They have very streaky shooters, though. They will go as far as Clayton, Brown, and Paveletzke take them. Hadaway is a nice 4th piece. They are shooting a strong 48.2% from the field this season along with 36.7% from 3 while averaging 81.1 PPG.

Toledo was a good warmup measuring stick. 2 of our next 3 are the measuring sticks - Ohio and Miami. The MAC will come down to one of these 3 I believe.

He's awful.  He symbolizes OU and everything that is detestable about that team and fan base.

Hoping for a packed house tonight, good crowd on Tuesday despite being sapped by the bingo in the union. Seems like the marketing division is genuinely trying to attract students to go.

i would say "first tier" rival but that may be more of an issue for us older folks.

Respectfully, no team equals the dislike and disgust I have for Kent. No one is close. That being said OU and Toledo are in the next tier, for me, and they are easy to get fired up over. The rest in the MAC are Meh!

I don't know, that UA and Northern Illinois rivalry is pretty intense

I see it as Portage being by far the primary rival and Athens clearly the next in line… after that it’s pretty much all those former MAC East foes and Toledo in basketball due to recency only…. I still have never gotten over that title game loss in Cleveland to Miami on the miracle shot just as Akron was becoming a MAC power nor the way Buffalo treated Akron in the Hurley days.

PCCC

Ohio

Toledo

Everyone else. And that's the problem with the MAC. PCCC is there because natural due to proximity. We are the northern version of the Tobacco Road rivalry. Ohio and Toledo are in there because of their competitiveness. Nobody else in the MAC consistently competes towards the top. Buffalo has fallen way off after their run in the mid to late teens. Miami (OH) hasn't been the same since Charlie Coles (although Steele might bring them back to make this list). BUGS simply exists. The rest of the traditional "West" is irrelevant. The MAC needs more competitive programs.

With that being said, Beat the Kitties.

In 2013-2014 the Zips would fill the Convocation Center and we would play a regular season game before 11000 crazy fans in the Ozone and we had 5000 fans at the Jar.  They had DJ Cooper and Kellogg and we had Zeke Marshall and Treadwell and Abreau.  Both teams were loaded and at the top of the MAC and there was some great basketball games.  Last year we drew 5500 fans at OU meaning the arena was at less than half capacity.  My guess is that tonight our building will be around half capacity even with all the student promotions.  I just don't see the passion for MAC basketball that we had a dozen years ago.

Keith's departure seemed to be a turning point with a substantial portion of the fan base for some reason and it is a damn shame because as much as I like and appreciate Keith, Groce is every bit as good or better.

I think covid compounded the issue. I know I personally never resumed my season tickets after. I think people just fell out of the habit of going to live sporting events and replaced it with other things. For the college students that would probably be things like tik tok.

I agree and actually know some of those people.  However, not enough to make that big of a difference.   I do not think any of the MAC teams are drawing like they were 12 years ago.  Even if you are a fan, you can stay home and watch the game on ESPN.  I think the large crowds for MAC basketball are things of the past.  Even this year I wonder if Kent has a bad year whether we will draw good numbers for these games.

Free gold t-shirt tonight for Gold Rush night that just has AKRON on the front and Children's Hospital logo on back. No reference to Zips, basketball or the University. Oh, and the team just came out in black uniforms with gold trim. 🙄
