  1. Recent events have caused me to schedule a last minute trip to Ohio. Does anyone know where I can buy an expedited fishing license in Hudson?

  2. Trimble has been a conundrum this season. He's played 20 games. In his twelve worst shooting games, he's 16-90 from behind the arc, for a ghastly 17.7 %. In the other eight games he's a sizzling 38-69...good for 55%. The best thing about Freeman is - he brings it every...single...night. If his shot is off, he still rebounds and defends at a high level. When Trimble is off...he's WAY off...and with the volume of shots he takes it seems increasingly tough to keep him on the floor hoping he turns it around. Clarke, Dawson and Tribble are all playing their best ball of the season. I think Trimble needs to find his stroke if the Zips are to win a championship this season, and reach their full 2022 potential. His 3-point season average is 34%, which is sub-par for a "shooter." And 60% of the time, when the final buzzer sounds he's shot below that average. 1/3rd of his season's 3's came in two games (BG + Marshall). It's fun when he hits those 26 footers. Hope he gets back on track tonight.

  3. His post play was pretty suspect. 😁

  4. Any conversation regarding the best all time bigs in UA basketball should include Bill Turner 63-67. Realize he was before almost all of you. 6-7 power forward/center, ranks 5th in all time scoring and 4th in all time rebounds ( please note he played with two other players in top 6 all time rebounds). Realize this was against smaller schools but did include Earl the Pearl Monroe among other top talent. He did make the NBA and play for 6 seasons.

  7. Anyone have info on our kickers bench press, vertical leap, or 40 time?

  8. The problem with Trimble is that if he is not shooting the ball well he does not add much to the team. He has one offensive rebound the entire season and has a very low number of total rebounds this season. He is not a great defender nor does he have great assists numbers. He is amazing when he is on. However, there is only one game against Western Michigan when he went inside the three point line and started scoring. If Groce's emphasis is going to be on rebounding and toughness, I would not be surprised to see him limit Trimble's minutes if he is not hitting from the 3 point line.

  9. When your "elite" shooter isn't in the conference's top 25 in 3 point shooting percentage there's an issue. By the way, Ali and Castaneda are 8th and 7th.

  10. Agreed. But my hunch is that the best is yet to come.

  11. Prediction: At least 1 technical foul will be called on KSUcks. Not sure if it'll be on Pinky or Insincere, but at least one of them is getting T'd up.

  12. Which is infuriating. They did the same thing for 3 years with Zeke Marshall. Good job, MAC. Way to keep some of your best players on the bench. That's worth the price of admission. šŸ™„

  13. We're learning to play w/o relying on Bryan Trimble scorching the nets. I like it. If Bryan's on fire then great! Icing on the cake. But we don't go into games with that as our game plan & then commence to offensively pee down our legs if Trimble, as is more often the case than not, happens to be cold as ice. Kent ran us off the 3-point line last time & we didn't respond well. Playing inside out should, one would think, give us better looks from 3-land tonight. I think I'd start Dawson over Trimble tonight. He's a junk yard dog, won't get punked, is a better defender, better rebounder, and he'll keep you honest from the 3-point line. What's worse for Trimble's psyche? Being relegated to Instant Offense Microwave 6th Man, or getting yanked as soon as Groce sees he's cold? I think Microwave 6th Man is a cool role to play on a team. Wonder if Trimble's "teamism" is strong enough to allow him to do that?

  15. This is not brain science. We were 1 of 11 from 3 point land in the 2nd half, got outscored in the paint by 10 points and got outrebounded by 10. Based on our recent play I expect more points in the paint, better rebounding and less reliance on the 3 pointers.

  21. I'll be that guy,...Big Dog deserves to be in the discussion. He did win MAC POTY. I think it would be cool if we could somehow create a poll and rank our top 10, 15, 20 whatever Zips players and combine the votes to get the official ZN.o player ranking.

  22. This is why I always tell people to pump the brakes on Enrique being an NBA prospect. I think he can get there, but if Romeo Travis never played in the league, I find it tough **right now** seeing Enrique playing in the league.

  23. Took a look at the remaining schedules for the top 5, which I consider to be contenders for #1 seed, and locks for Cleveland. This game is a must-win for Kent, as they have by far the most difficult remaining schedule. The conference regular season is Toledo's to lose, however. They have the fewest games remaining, and by far the easiest schedule.

  24. Zips swept them last year. And you know it's always hard to beat a team 3x in a season...so that could bode well for Cleveland, right? Take 1/2 a Tramadol tomorrow around 2pm. Looking at the MAC conference only stats, these two teams are quite even and are top 2 in DEFENSE (points allowed). Neither is high in the 3 point shooting stats. So Im thinking this will be a game in the 60s. side note: the winless Broncos have the highest scorer in the MAC.

  25. Losses due to sub-par kicking should not be a problem this season. When I say we are plenty deep at kicker I mean we are bordering on Mariana Trench deep.

  26. Having it televised, on a Friday night, doesn't help in drawing a crowd. But I'll agree COVID has killed our attendance. It'll take some time to get it back up post-COVID too. Sucks, because we may have our best basketball coach ever...and have seen two of the Top 10 Zips players ever...and perhaps the best Zips basketball team ever...and few fans will have seen them work their craft in-person.

  30. Great post @Let'sGoZips94. Groce was a fairly obvious hire and though that first team he had in 2017-2018 was downright hard to watch most of the time, they showed some tremendous flashes that made me very excited for the future, especially knowing that short little guard sitting out is supposed to be pretty good. Fast forward to 2018-2019, Cheese and LCJ lead the back court along with Ivey, nearly beating a ranked Clemson team in an early season tournament. Unfortunately, that team couldn't win a close game to save its life. But high-level defense and loads of back court potential led to a blowout win against Kent and a home MAC tournament game before a destruction against Buffalo. Believe it or not, this team was rated #2 in the MAC in KenPom at something like 108. Then Team 119. What a special team. My favorite Akron team ever, quite possibly. Sure, they could have blown the QF game in Cleveland, but the fact that they didn't even get the chance to compete while programs like Buffalo skated losing to the 12-seed in the first round makes it all more painful. That team was nearly perfectly put together. Then COVID nukes nonconference play and the preseason and despite that, Akron started MAC play 12-3 before a bit of a collapse and then coming within a bucket of playing in the MAC title. And coming into this year, they should've beat Ohio State and outside of two clunkers that could've in hindsight been the result of a broken locker room caused by Whitford's Saboteur KJ Walton (I'm joking...or am I?), they've played some really nice basketball even with a big interruption after they began to play their best basketball. Yes, I am biased. Yes, I am a homer. No, I am not making excuses for the shortcomings. But there's been a lot of adversity thrown at the program over 5 years, and Groce & Co. have pretty much stayed the course and trusted the process all the way. I admire him a great deal, and I'm very happy to have him leading the program. What I like the most about Groce is the type of culture he has instilled. The teamism stuff can be annoying and seem silly, but we saw what true teamism is in that championship team. It was next man up, hard-nosed defense, high effort, good attitude in every game, they were so easy to love. Also, the general emphasis on conditioning and defense is something I love and has been important in getting the edge on teams late in games and competing with the big boys like Louisville, WVU, Ohio State when we do play them. It's almost like the obnoxious Heat Culture in the NBA. You love it when you have it, and hate it when you compete against it. I have said it before, Akron fans are very lucky and very spoiled. There will come a time where the program doesn't have these kinds of expectations that we've had for nearly 20 years now, at a traditionally lousy Mid-Major program. I'd love to have Groce here for the long-run, at least a couple more years maybe. I'm sure his thoughts on the "Akron job" have changed since he took it. He probably thought of it as a three-year rental until the next pay day, but maybe, just maybe, he's gotten comfortable at Akron and has pulled a Moorhead, realizing that it's a bit more fun to coach when the bright lights aren't on you and you don't have to compete with the best programs in the country every year. At the end of the day, Dambrot has proven you can build a winning program at Akron. John Groce has proven you can build a winning program at Akron. That's a great selling point on the job as a whole for when it comes time to bring in a new leader again. But until then, in Groce We Trust! Go Zips!

  31. I didn't know where to post this, but this is somewhat of a "where do I expect Akron to be" thread... Caris LaVert just got traded to the Cavaliers. The 6'6" Columbus, OH, product will be a home-team player in Ohio for what was almost the 3rd time in his career. I say almost, because he signed his NLI to play for Groce's OU team before decommitting when Groce left for Illinois. Groce, at OU, had 3 NCAA tournament wins in 4 seasons. Following the 3rd win (which resulted in a trip to the Sweet Sixteen), Groce was hired by Illinois. That Sweet Sixteen team returned in 2012-13, and was poised to add Mr. LaVert to that already-successful squad. When he was hired away, I told my dad, "Thank goodness. Groce was about to build a dynasty at OU." COVID killed the quick momentum Groce had rebuilt at Akron. We were poised to make a run in the 2020 NCAA tournament (assuming we would've won the MAC tourney) with that incredible squad led by LCJ, Cheese, Banks, and X1.0. We had the guard last season in LCJ, but lost the supporting pieces (I'm assuming COVID put a damper on the recruiting process as well). Now we have some nice pieces, but are young and lack that killer guard. I think this upcoming recruiting class fixes that issue, and we'll have this same team for a couple years because of the COVID eligibility rules. Given this information and what we're seeing this season, "progress" to me looks like getting back to what we were building with the 2019-2020 team, which was similar to what Groce had built with his DJ Cooper-led squad at OU. That squad was able to land a commitment from a player of Caris LaVert's caliber. I want to see that here (plus the NCAA Tourney wins).
