The MAC office needs to step in and talk to the members about scheduling out of conference. Maybe the MAC needs to pair up with a similar conference or few similar conferences for a scheduling arrangement or “conference challenge” type thing. The Zips seem to do well with the neutral floor tournaments they get into but also seem to play a lot of teams in the bottom of Division 1 (this year I do like that they got games at Ohio State and Wright State)... I am not saying I want them to schedule an impossible gauntlet, just instead of teams ranked 335 out of 358, why not teams ranked 260 and more home and home contracts that go for 2-4 years? This is also exactly why they need to bring back a Bracketbusters type of event.

Keith got bounced from the A-10 tournament but it was a close game. I would make one suggestion for him for next year. They have DUQ on the front of their uniforms but on TV it looks an awful lot like DUD. I think I'd change that.

One Ohio team made it to the round of 32. One made it to the sweet 16. We'll never know what the Chesse/Banks/LCJ/Williams team would have done, but it was the best team I've seen in the JAR wearing a Zips uniform. No one can deny it is a viable argument that he is an equivalent or better coach.

Huggins took over an Akron program that was on probation (previous coach's doings) to the NCAA Tournament in his second year. Although Wikipedia doesn't show it, he also had 2 Akron teams with NIT bids. There's a reason Cincinnati wanted him, and he delivered a Final Four soon after he arrived. Damn good coach wherever he's been. His final two seasons @ UA were as an Independent, with no conference tournament/automatic bid possibility like Dambrot had. But I think a lot of people think in binary terms...either he sucked or he was the Messiah. I like Dambrot. I spent 13 seasons supporting him. But I know Huggins is a better basketball coach. And I'm pretty sure Groce is too. No disrespect to KD. Dambrot was usually the second best coach in the MAC. That's pretty good. But 0 NCAA tourney wins, and 3-9 in MAC Championship finals doesn't get you an A+ grade. More like a solid "B."

Bob Huggins was the best University of Akron basketball coach in my lifetime without a doubt. KD or Groce could not hold a candle to him. Huggins and Akron basketball got screwed after Akron hired Faust as the football coach and wanted to move up in Football to Div1A from then Div 1AA (now FBS and FCS). Maybe you all are too young to remember Huggins, but 85-86 season was magical, led by Marcel Boyce. They moved to the Northeast (I believe) conference and Akron went down hill and Huggins left for Cincinnati.

I will absolutely take the over. 1. Look at my post from a few days ago. As long as we sign a couple of top players each year, the program will improve. 2. Go to GoZips and look at the high school signees this year. The coaching staff was successful in being over with just the late signing period. If you count all P5 schools, Coach Joe was way over 2 even though 90% of the high school players sign early. I cannot wait to see what this staff does with an entire recruiting cycle. In Joe We Trust!!!!

Has anyone talked to Coach JoMo about his views on Akron’s scheduling in the future. Does he like a FCS opponent every year? How many “pay day” games would be ideal? Will there be an emphasis on getting home and home series’ with other Group of Five programs? Does he think long cross country road trips build team chemistry or would he prefer a more regional approach? How possible does he think it would be to get Power Five schools to regularly visit InfoCision?

Brief post-regular season NET rankings. Took a look at conference rankings by AVERAGE and MEDIAN NET rankings. The MAC comes in at 20th (of 32) in Average NET, and 25th of 32 in MEDIAN Net, reflecting how considerably bottom-heavy the conference is. All of the P5 teams have average AND median NET rankings that are sub-100. I do believe the NCAA finally has a satisfactory metric now to justify exclusions of 99% of Mid-Major teams that may deserve an at-large bid.

Looking at the conference only stats, Toledo has an advantage in that only one of their players (Dennis) is in the top 15 of minutes played. Milner and Rollins and Shumate are at 18, 20, and 22. Meanwhile, Ravenna's Carry and Jacobs are in the top 5. My gut tells me that Miami is going to put up a tougher fight against Ravenna than Central is against Toledo. And I still believe that Ohio blew through the tourney last year because they had fresher legs and minds. This year they are tired and are collapsing at year end. Toledo is #1 in offense by a lot an Zips are #1 in defense by 1.3 points.

So we still technically over-achieved, despite getting literally nothing and then basically nothing from two key players we expected to have this year - one who prior to the start of the season, we may have reasonably assumed would be our best player. Well done Groce and team. The future looks bright. With that said, it will be a tough road in Cle, but I at least really want to get over the Buffalo hump up there.

For kicks, I compared the pre-season poll to the final standings. While the order is a little different, the top 5 teams are correct.
