Game should not have been that close, but a win is a win, especially in the NCAA tournament. Haven't been able to say that for 5 years. Survive and advance.7 points

Princeton has won the Ivy League 3 years in a row. The Ivy League is ranked 10-12 in NET conference rankings. The MAC is low 20s. Sweet 16 appearance 2 years ago, NIT appearance last year, even without the automatic bid5 points

Best student section all year tonight, still pretty far off from what it was even two years ago but it was such a nice sight to see. Some young life running the rowdies now apparently, looking forward to see how next year goes student wise.5 points

If we're able to pull that off I am going to insist that all games be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday mornings to ensure that the MAC games are the only football games happening at that given time in the whole USA to draw in that huge TV crowd.4 points

I really liked the new rowdies I talked to them for a little bit. Hopefully they’ll do better with the new regime. Akron staff took away the horn and the Drum we had because of “NCAA regulations” so we were nerfed a little bit by that. It was a fun student crowd who was super into it which is what matters3 points

On Wed against Houston Freeman played 14 minutes and scored a career high 6 points and had a really nice assist that made the highlight clip. Indiana has a lot of injuries and he is getting more playing time.3 points

Alternate angle on the goal. With how good Princeton's goalie was tonight, this is the type of location that was needed to get a goal. He nailed it.3 points

Zips really played good soccer tonight. Very proud of them for winning an NCAA tournament game. Soccer is such a hard game. If this were a football game, it would have felt like a game that was 31-0. But the game is soccer....The zips and their fans will take a 1-0 win to advance to the 2nd round. The zips really dominated on shots and shots on goal. Zips just missed scoring 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. I thought that this was Ashton Kamdem's best game ever as a zip. He was absolutely fantastic. I do not know that if they measure interceptions. Ashton stepped in and corralled the ball numberous times to start the zips on a good break. I thought that Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal was aggressive tonight and helped keep the zips on the offensive. I was really glad to see Malik fire off a hard shot around 70 or 75 minutes. Malik might have been a little too much unselfish in the first half. Malik's speed and skill generated some great opportunities early in the first half. Zips are going to need Malik to score a goal or two to go deep in the tournament. Congratulations to the coaches and all of the players. Zips Nation is very proud of the Soccer Zips.3 points

Last game of 2024 for Zips football. QB: Former Georgia Tech transfer Tucker Gleason left the game against Ohio with an injury. Assuming Gleason is healthy, he will be the starter. Otherwise, redshirt sophomore John Alan Richter will start. Gleason has thrown for 2,168 yards, 20 TDs vs 7 INTs, and completes 60% of his passes. When kept clean, Gleason is incredibly efficient - completing 72% of his passes and throwing for 15 TDs vs 3 INTs. Under pressure, Gleason completes 37% of his passes and has thrown for 5 TDs vs 4 INTs. Richter is the less mobile of the two quarterbacks, but perhaps the better passer. He has thrown for 497 yards, 4 TDs vs 0 INTs, and has a 64% completion rate. RB: Surprisingly enough, Toledo has actually run the ball for less yardage than Akron in conference play. The 2024 Toledo squad splits snaps between four backs - true sophomore Connor Walendzak, Georgia transfer Sevaughn Clark, redshirt senior Jacquez Stewart, and redshirt junior Willie Shaw. They have combined for 969 yards and 6 touchdowns. The backs will be utilized in the passing game. WR: Toledo will roll out two of the better MAC receivers in redshirt senior Jerjuan Newton and true junior Junior Vandeross. Newton is the 3rd leading receiver in the MAC with 56 receptions for 868 yards and 10 touchdowns. Vandeross is the 8th leading receiver in the MAC with 62 receptions for 679 yards and 4 touchdowns. TE: Former Western Michigan transfer Anthony Torres takes the majority of snaps at tight end. He may be the best pass blocking TE in the conference. Torres is 4th amongst tight ends in receptions with 21 catches for 280 yards and 7 TDs. OL: Toledo had to fill a few vacant spots from last year’s OL. They have been solid in pass protection, but have struggled to consistently create holes for the backs. LT - Allen Jones (R. Sr.) (Prairie View A&M transfer) LG - Carter Fouty (R. Jr.) C - Jakob James (Sr.) (Ohio State transfer) RG - Ethan Spoth (R. So.) RT - Cole Rhett (R. Fr.) DL: Former Maryland transfer Deshawn Holt and redshirt senior D’Andre Ragin are the defensive ends. Holt has 38 tackles and a sack, while Ragin has 38 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Redshirt seniors Darius Alexander and Cavon Butler are two of the better pass rushing defensive tackles in the conference. They have combined for 68 tackles and 5 sacks. LB: Redshirt seniors Daniel Bolden and Jackson Barrow are the linebackers. Bolden is 9th in tackles with 82 total and 1.5 sacks. Barrow has 61 total tackles and 2 sacks. DB: True juniors Avery Smith and Nasir Bowers are the cornerbacks. Smith is 2nd in the MAC with 13 PDs. He also has 45 tackles and 2 interceptions. Bowers has 32 tackles and 2 interceptions. Senior Maxen Hook and former Penn State transfer Jaden Dottin are the safeties. Maxen Hook has already exceeded the 100 tackle plateau with 104 total tackles. He’s also collected 2 interceptions. Former wide receiver Jaden Dottin has played in only two games on defense this year. True sophomore Braden Awls is the nickelback. Awls has 65 tackles and 3 interceptions. K: True freshman Dylan Cunanan has yet to miss an extra point on 34 attempts. He is 13 of 16 on field goals with a long of 54 yards. P: True sophomore Emilio Duran is 9th in MAC punting. He averages 41.3 yards with a long of 70 yards. KR: Jacquez Stewart is the most dynamic kick returner in the MAC and has already taken one back 98 yards for a score. Offense: Toledo has rushed the ball more than only one team in conference play….and that is Kent State. The Rockets rely heavily on their passing attack and average a few yards shy of 250 yards per game. That’s good for 4th in the MAC. Defense: Toledo has been slightly better against the run than Akron in conference play. Toledo allows 167 yards rushing per game, whereas Akron allows 171 yards rushing per game. The Rockets fielded an elite secondary in 2023, but have since lost some prime talent and their defensive backs coach. The 2024 secondary is still very good, but Toledo has allowed 195 yards per game through the air. Akron allows 228 per game. Summary: Some will say Toledo has played a more difficult conference slate than Akron. While that may be true, let’s take a look at common opponents and scores. With the exception of NIU, it is the same result and similar point differential in all the games. Buffalo Toledo = Loss 30-15 Akron = Loss 41-30 Ohio Toledo = Loss 24-7 Akron = Loss 30-10 Bowling Green Toledo = Loss 41-26 Akron = Loss 27-20 EMU Toledo = Win 29-28 Akron = Win 25-21 NIU Toledo = Win 13-6 Akron = Loss 29-16 My point to the above is that while Toledo most certainly has more talent than us from top to bottom, they have not played up to their potential. In fact, some of Toledo’s players have publicly questioned their teammates’ effort through the course of the season. We can question plenty of things about the 2024 Akron team, but hustle/effort has always been there. This is an opportunity to change the public perception of where the program is headed. If the Zips can play a clean game, and Toledo treats this as a walk through, we’ll have a chance to go into the offseason with momentum. A season ending win, coupled with a potential 3-1 start in 2025, would slingshot the program to where most of us thought it would be when Moorhead was hired.2 points

Our ball movement is fantastic. Will be interesting to see how much better we look in March when the chemistry is more solidified. Also, Amani is a completely different player this year. Wow. Props to him for putting in the work this off-season.2 points

https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/article/?categoryId=21&articleId=54105&articleTitle=mens-ncaa-tournament-round-two-preview No. 5 Akron(m) (12-4-4) at No. 4 Indiana(m) (10-4-5) - Sunday, November 24th, 1 PM Eastern, ESPN+ Two of College Soccer’s blue bloods meet as Akron travels to Indiana. The story of this match is what Indiana can do, if anything, to slow down NCAA Division I top scorer Emil Jaaskelainen. And even then, the Zips have several more attacking talents like Malik Henry, Dyson Clapier, and Victor Gaumlin, who can wreak havoc. But Indiana is on a nine-year streak of making it past the second round, suggesting Todd Yeagley and his staff will have the answers.2 points

Thanks for the history. Notable is that Caleb Porter never lost only once to his Alma Mater. [CP never lost to IU with Jared Embick on his staff.] EDIT - CORRECTION, my brain was off by a year when I posted my original, now edited, statement above. As I recall, 2006 was CP's 1st year as Zips Head Coach. Zips lost to IU that year, but never thereafter during CP's tenure. Still a great accomplishment once he started making his mark on Zips Men's Soccer. (sorry for my original misstatement above.)2 points

Always love seeing the Gauchos win, especially over UCLA. Their support in 2010 will never be forgotten.2 points

They really should've done a "lower tier" mini plan for these 6 home conference games. They have the pick 6 plan at $60 for GA, but you could easily do a 6 game nonconference plan at $40 total2 points

I wish they would've done a weekend ticket or a multi-game discount of some kind. Would've been nice to see some creative marketing for this.2 points

As a Zips fan, this would probably be for the best. I could just view the boxscore after work to see they lost. No need to waste hours of my evening watching the pathetic product we've been putting out the past ~15 years.1 point

I couldn't imagine the PR hit Akron would take absorbing ~$1 million in payout hit for firing the coach and his staff at a time we're discussing major layoffs. Then again given Akron's track record of being poorly managed and being a PR nutcase, it would be onpoint.1 point

Thank you, Zarek Valentin......for recommending Beto Ydrach. Big East Defensive player of the year !!!!! Hard to believe that a great player....like Beto only started 1 game last year for Central Florida. Beto has been fantastic all year !!! https://ucfknights.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/season/2023/player/beto-ydrach1 point

It is amazing how similar .....the seasons are for both the zips and the hoosiers Akron started the season 1-3-3 Akron then went 10-0-1....before a loss to Georgetown in the Big East semis Indiana started their season with a record of 2-3-4 They went 8-0-1 ....before a loss to Michigan in the Big Ten semis It looks like the zips....and hoosiers had 3 common opponents Notre Dame, Butler and Ohio State Zips went 1-1-1 Hoosiers went 0-0-3 One other interesting comment on the Hoosiers Hoosiers have a higher RPI than Princeton Princeton had an RPI of 17....and they were given a road game in the first round Indiana had an RPI of 21.....and they rewarded with a first round bye.....with a top 16 seed (14 seed)1 point

Following the 1-0 Zips win v IU on 9/7/2012, back in the lobby of the Zips hotel, after I congratulated him and team, Caleb Porter smiled and told me that there was nothing better than beating your friends. 😃1 point

Akron hosted a first round Gardner Webb was on the road.... I would think that Akron...would definitely host that game.1 point

I think the criticism for KD's schedules was surrounded around being in years 10, 11, 12, 13, and not taking that next leap as a program. Should the program under Groce fail to take that same desired leap, it will get loud. It's also a very different college basketball landscape now compared to KD's tenure. Complete roster overhaul doesn't exactly lend itself to wanting a P4 gauntlet. Competitive mid majors suit this squad better.1 point

I think some have used it as a running gag to make fun at others over a previous disagreement on here. If that wasn't your intent, I apologize. I agree completely. A lot of different paths they could've taken.1 point

The basketball program actually has enough donor support to cover a healthy chunk of its bills. Without people like Bud Wentz it probably would be whored out like CMU and several other MAC basketball programs. It's much more expensive to run an FBS program, especially given that we're still paying on that monstrosity. I know Kaulig gifts a lot for football, but you need a much larger pool of large financial backers to be competitive in football. Especially in this day and age of NIL.1 point

Some people are impossible to please. They say football schedules too tough and then complain basketball doesn't schedule tough enough. The reality is we already lost the 2 measuring stick contests we had. At this point OOC only value is to sort out rotations and build chemistry. This is a completely new group of players. It's going to take time before they peak. Also, these schools are as good, if not better, than several of the schools that we'll play in MAC play.1 point

Whoever is hired as the new AD is going to have his hands full. Big budget cuts are coming and the new AD will be viewed as a a hatchet man. Charles did the best he could with the cards that were dealt to him. Over the last 3 years the athletic department budget has been reduced by $6 million. We went from a marketing department of four down to one. Every sport had it's budget cut. Even with that obstacle he still managed to get many significant projects accomplished. New turf at Infocision, new scoreboard at Infocision, complete renovation of Lee Jackson field just to mention a few. The overall condition of all our venues improved. He worked hard to retain our best coaches, men's basketball, men's soccer and swimming. If they were unhappy with him they would have left for many of the lucrative offers they recieved during his tenure. We won 11 MAC championships and one BE championship. Did he probably miss on hiring Joe Mooehead? Maybe, but at the time is was a wildly applauded move. I'm not sure short of a miracle, anyone can turn around Zips football. As far as him being an outsider, you could say that about every AD we have had since Jim Dennison. He did miss on the logo change. He misread how much our fan base liked the logos we had. He also missed on the baseball coaching hire that put us back a few steps. Since he is a NY native and has worked in that market before(Columbia) I think be successful at Fordham. This is what happens at major institutions when there is a leadership change. The new leader wants to bring in his guys to execute his vision.1 point
