  1. Seems like things are kind of percolating right? Finally got some buzz, sustained conference success, good kids on the team, the culture, finally some good marketing.. We're right there if we want to take the next step. Today would be a good day for it

  3. Great article on the transfer players. Love the quote from Okonkwo: Per a change in NCAA rules, Okonkwo has one year of eligibility left and said, "I plan on staying here for as long as I possibly can. I love it here. I have no reason to leave. The coaching staff here, the atmosphere, it is everything you could want in a place. I am so thankful I came to Akron."

  12. I think Wilson and Hardman are keys. We need them to shoot well from distance. They are both streak shooters and do not need a great deal of room to shoot.

  13. I will add that a lot of times in these 14vs3 or 13vs4 games you see the underdog come out with lots of intensity, but then loses steam in the final 10 minutes or so as they get gassed. Akron is different in the way that given our 10 man rotation, we can play at a high level of intensity for the full 40 minutes.

  14. Arizona is going to pound the ball inside either by their guards attacking the rim or their post players backing us down. They have formidable bigs and I think we'll be eaten alive if we just allow them to back down our smaller defenders. For this reason I expect Groce to send guard help to force Arizona players to pick up their dribble. This will lead to them getting some open looks beyond 3. They aren't a good 3-point shooting so our best bet is to force them to shoot over us. If they're able to score in the paint it will be a long night. At the same time, I think the Zips will need to make 13-14 3's while shooting it at a 45%+ clip. We also must limit turnovers and secure defensive rebounds. This is probably a game we lose 4 out of 5 times. Let's play our a$$ off and make this that 1 out of 5 time that we win.

  15. Indeed. Because it stayed invested in the economy, in companies, and in workers instead of flowing to the wealthy. Because if you're going to pay 90%, you don't take it home as pay then. You keep it in the company, and pay your workers more. This isn't rocket science. Ironically THIS is what actually generates more tax revenue. Because if you're paying workers more money, that's all taxed as income for everything from social security to FIT. So preventing the wealthy from being able to be paid exorbitant amounts, and rewarding the actual boot-on-the-grounds workers more, is what actually generates more tax revenue.

  16. Ohio.com article by Brad Bournival today about Shaka Smart and his love for Akron and Keith Dambrot. No mention about how he poured it on after the VCU/Akron game was long over. I've liked Marquette since the Al McGuire days of my youth but I'll never root for them as long as they're coached by that disingenuous little troll.

  17. If the quality of the teams you get thrashed by is indicative of the quality of your program, then Zips football is much better than I was led to believe!

  18. One thing I love about these Zips is that everyone on the team is involved and having fun. Guys like Gray and Wilson have been here for a short period of time but they are right in the middle of the mix. Seth is leading the team in the huddle before they come out. Seth is putting the Akron name as the winner on the bracket board. No sulking, no outsiders. From Nate Johnson to Connor Groce they're all in and happy for each other. That's TEAMISM.

  20. What actually caused the National Debt that we now pay $800-billion in interest on? What actually caused the $1 Trillion deficit we are currently experiencing? 1. The Bush-era Taxcuts 2. Two unfunded wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) 3. Continually increasing military budgets to the level of absurdity over the past 20-years (and no, Military aid to Ukraine doesn't actually count here because most of that was surplus stockpile that was going to cost us $ to decommission anyways). 4. Trump (2016) Taxcuts. The four things are the major contributors to both the Debt AND deficit. And no, it goes much further back than the past 10-years. It goes back to that 2000s era of Taxcuts that turned Bill Clinton's surpluses into deficits. And if you want to play the conspiracy theory game, it's all by design of ONE political party so they could justify cutting Social Security instead of doing the sensible thing, which everyone knew in the 1980s we should do to solve Social Security, which is eliminating the cap on taxable personal income. I'm so sick and tired of people lying about this. It's not a mystery as to where this debt and deficit came from. It's from cutting taxes into oblivion, and running up the charge card on military spending. Period Fullstop. It wasn't spending on education, or food stamps, or national park funding, or NASA, or the EPA (etc...etc...etc). It was taxcuts and military spending. Yes, we should have been able to spend stimulus money in a lifetime of a Pandemic to keep people in homes and to keep the economy from free falling into a depression. You know, basic crap governments are like supposed to do. But no, a segment of this country decided it was better to give free handouts to the wealthiest people in the country at the expense of the future.

  21. I do not want to offend anyone but I was hoping to read comments about our game tomorrow and not guessing who may or may not transfer. Lets enjoy the moment where we can get our first NCAA victory. Go Zips!!!

  22. I believe, based on my experience at the tourney in Pittsburgh last year, there has to be an hour between the end of game 2 in the first session (in this case, GCU vs MD) and the start of game 1 of the second session (Akron vs Arizona), which is why our game is pushed back to 7:48. Because they have to clear out the arena and then let fans back in.

  24. The highest tax rate in the 1950s only applied to income over $200,000. Today, $200k = $2.4 million. They didn't invest in workers to keep their taxes down. They created paper losses on real estate and country club memberships. A summer home was a great way to keep your taxes down. There were many more ways to hide income in the 50s that didn't exactly find their way to the middle class. Does anyone really think people in the 1950s making $200,000 per year and only took home $18,000?

  28. Two more Beacon articles on the Zips- https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/college/zips/2025/03/20/coach-john-groce-ncaa-tournament-upset-history-akron-vs-arizona-march-madness/82559868007/?tbref=hp https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/college/zips/2025/03/20/akron-zips-seth-wilson-ric-flair-pregame-speech-ncaa-tournament-march-madness-arizona-wildcats/82559794007/?tbref=hp The second article is on Seth Wilson's Ric Flair ritual used pregame to pump up the team. In the words of Flair, "to be the man, you gotta beat the man. Wooooooooo"" Tonight, the Zips beat the man.

  36. Downtown is pretty safe I almost never hear of many issues down there nor have I had any issues ever. Downtown just gets lumped into Akron as a whole and makes it look bad when it really isn't. The city needs to cleanup the surrounding areas though.....

  37. We've already been down this road. The NIT clearly stated what the criteria would be before the season even started (I can link you the press release) and they followed through on that. Complain about the NET, Kenpom, and whatever metrics you want, but that's what the NIT committee decided was important. They made that public knowledge, which is more transparency than we've ever seen in the selection process. Pretending to be shocked over something that was common knowledge is a waste of time to discuss.

  40. KenPom ranks Akron’s roster as the 4th-smallest in the country, with most of the contributors no taller than 6-foot-3. How will it be able to match up with Arizona’s rotation where everyone is at least 6-3? “Not good. Akron has been a program that has struggled with size the last couple of seasons. It caused fits for them last season in a first-round game against a tall Creighton team, losing by 17.” I think this is a bad take. We struggled against Creighton because they had shooters and we didn't. We had actually had the lead late in the first half before we went cold and they started not missing. Freeman had 20+ vs. Kalkbrenner. The only team we've truly struggled against with size was Saint Mary's, and they're an anomaly with 3 guys at least 7 feet tall. Yale had size but that wasn't the reason for the blowout; not making our shots was the cause. If size was everything, Purdue would've won 4 straight national titles with Edey. March is dominated by guards, specifically with shot-making ability. Nick Lorensen, the guy who answered these questions, isn't exactly the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to CBB. It took him a very long time to include Akron in his Mid Major Top 25, and his Top 25s are suspect at best. He has several answers in the article posted above that are very shallow and lack any sort of true understanding of Groce/Akron.

  41. McNeese coach Will Wade agrees to become the next HC of NC State. I never want to hear a single person ever complain about the players getting paid or transferring when coaches like this can crap all over the place and let someone else clean it up.

  43. If you guys are going to make snarky comments, you should at least know what your talking about. Considering the amount of injuries and other issues with players, this year's team still competed every night. You know that Bud Wentz also runs a NIL program for the womens team? We have some pretty good freshmen and will pick up a couple more players from the portal. Shelbee Brown will be back and those injured players will return too. Gensler is a good coach. Eventually things will start to go our way.
