Coming last football season, they had the second most win in the ACC over something like a 6-8 year period. Only Clemson was better. They Were in the ACC championship two years prior. They have had several Top 20 rankings in the past 20 years and even some top ten. Their baseball team was in the college world series last year. In the past 20 years they have won six national championships in six different spots. The women's golf team won the national championship last year. They compete at the highest level in soccer, mens golf, women's golf mens tennis and women's tennis. Will Zalatoris is a known professional golfer. They contribute nothing? Their school and athletic department are not taxpayer supported. I think you may have them mixed up with Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse, Georgia Tech or NC State. Unless, you just don't know what you are talking about. The teams in bold that you mentioned are pretty much the majority of those "second most ACC wins". Add in some down FSU teams, and that accolade isn't very impressive. The ACC is not a good football conference, and Wake Forest is consistently 7-6, 8-4 at best in recent seasons (11-3 or something like that was their best record a year or 2 ago, which was indeed impressive). Teetering around .500 or slightly above .500 does very little for the ACC. You mentioned the six national championships in non-revenue sports. I specifically referenced their impact on the ACC, or lack thereof, when it comes to revenue sports. I would hope a private school that mooches $40M per year in conference media revenue would be able to produce strong country club/Olympic sports. Imagine what Akron or many G5 programs could do with the $40M that the ACC schools get thanks to Clemson, Florida State, and UNC/Duke basketball. I stand by my statement: Wake Forest does nothing for the ACC when it comes to revenue sports.

zippy-claws
Back in chilly Ohio for a family function and Hubby and I went to the Zips game last night vs. Buffalo, and I was pleasantly surprised and excited by the size of crown, after reading some of the posts leading into this weekend. Still wasn't like the "old days", but nice crown, engaged, and the game was great. Still a sorely lacking student contingent. We were talking about it with our seat-neighbors and we all agreed that waaay back, the student population was not only a larger number enrolled, but also a huge number of students were "commuter" students, not living on campus or really that many out-of-towners. So it was always great to get out of the apartment, Mom and Dad's house, grab a local beer before and after the game, then drive home. Students grew up on the Zips, not moved to campus from other regions and had to form a loyalty quickly. Abd there was a heck of a lot of night school students (us included) that used to stop by and catch whatever part of the game was left. Just a few pbservations....

Move it to Akron and drop a basketball court in the middle. But I like the idea of a retro design. I would choose a small, intimate, comfortable, modern version of Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse. How’s Akron vs. Eastern Michigan gonna get them off the couch? I really don't know. People don't go to games or even the movies anymore. My home TV is great for watching movies. It's a better view for most games than most seats. Watching a game at a bar, which I did Friday, is a pretty awesome viewing experience. Is a free T-shirt going to motivate me to go to a game? Probably not. I have more T-shirts than I need. I should probably go upstairs and throw a few away after this post. Beer? I can drink beer at a bar or home. Free parking? I probably blow more than $10 per day on things far more stupid than a parking spot. Free tickets? Maybe if they were decent and I didn't need chiropractic care after. I do like to attend events of high quality and gladly spend the money. This isn't a high quality opportunity.

How’s Akron vs. Eastern Michigan gonna get them off the couch? One other thing. I think younger people struggle with watching live sports events and television in general without assistance. For example, I like listening to music in bars. I'm also capable of understanding what's going on in the sporting event I'm watching without listening to the announcers. Younger people will throw a fit now if they can't hear the announcers during a game. Another thing I was reading about recently was young people watch television with the closed caption on even if they aren't hearing impaired. What kind of assistance would they need if at a game? The first guy arrived and when the farmer answered the door he said "Hi. My name's Joe, I'm here to pick up Flo, we're going to see a show, is she ready to go?" So the farmer called upstairs to Flo, she came downstairs and left with her date. Then the second suitor arrives, farmer answers the door and the guy says "Hi, my name's Freddy, I'm here to pick up Betty, we're going out for spaghetti, is she ready?" So the farmer calls Betty and she also leaves for her date. Then the third guy arrives, the farmer answers and the guy said "Hi, my name's Chuck...." So the farmer shot him. 1
RowdyZip
I moved to the Wilmington, NC area earlier this year. I got a hankering for some basketball so I looked at taking the wife and kids to a UNCW game. They're a solid program in a similarly situated conference (CAA). They play in a very similar mid 80s arena with an almost identical capacity as the Jar, Trask Arena. The get-the-door price for a family of 4 is $130, plus parking. They regularly sell out games at Trask. Basketball season weather, public perception of the program, and competition from professional sports absolutely suppress attendance. It'll take some seriously outside the box thinking, or another 20 game winning streak, to get regular season butts in seats to a higher threshold. I swear there's a fan blowing down Carroll Street when you're walking to the JAR.
