Zips have had some issues with practice violence as well, of course.  Not too long ago.

Kostelac and other guy was what, Groce’s 2nd year? Am I forgetting something?

It was Groce's 2nd year and the other player was Khadim Gueye.  Kostelac was a  bench player and it was Groce's 2nd year and after this incident Kostelac transferred to Walsh.  He sued Akron and Groce after the incident but I do not believe the suit was successful.

And since this incident, Akron has been home to some of the highest character rosters in the NCAA, which is the true difference between Akron & Kent. Chris Singletary blew a .13 and punched Nate Linhart 17 years ago - they've had countless incidents since. We have Abreu and Gueye/Kostelec. That's it.

Also Diggs and Treadwell domestic issues.

You're dealing with 18 to 22 year old young men with lots of testosterone and undeveloped brains.  Some things are bound to happen no matter how hard you try.  Groce and staff have done a nice job of sorting through the available players, avoiding the kids with obvious warning signs and bringing in kids that have the type of character to avoid trouble, while other programs are willing to look away from the obvious warning signs if a kid is talented enough.

You're probably too young to remember when Coleman Crawford's player hit his teammate over the head with a folding chair!  😉

Ryan Andrick cold cocked Dan Hipsher on the sidelines during a game.

The legend has grown over the years 😀…he shoved him. Still pretty shocking to see a player forcibly shove his coach.

My favorite exchange- at the end of an Akron-Kent game Kyrim Massey clocked Jami Bosley with an elbow at mid court as a ball was being inbounded. Bosley was laid out on the center court logo, and no referee saw it.

The next season Massey went up for a 3 on his first shot of the game and Andrick “accidentally” rammed his fingers into Massey’s eyes. An 8-month delayed payback.

Ahh the good old days..,now you get T’d up for saying “You can’t guard me” as you jog down the floor after a made shot.

I loved Ryan Andrick. He was a former Manchester Panther 💪

Those were my first favorite Zips teams w/ so much local flavor.

Ryan Andrick - Manchester

Nate Shindenwolf (sp?) - Manchester

Jamie Bosley - Jackson

Jimmal Ball - Canton Timken

George Phillips from Chicagoland

I was not a huge Dan Hipsher fan. I would have never wanted to play for a coach like him. Seemed like the team despised him.

I went to one of his summer basketball camps when I was real young and if I'm remembering correctly, he was a real piece of work. I remember a lot of yelling. The players were nice but he was something else.

On the flip side, I attended KD's basketball camps and holy crap what a difference. KD's staff was always so incredibly nice. To this day Lamont Paris is one of the nicest sports figures I've ever met. Not to mention the players - Quaide Milum, Dru Joyce, Jeremiah Wood, Cedric Middleton, Steve McNeese, etc. - all very kind. Those were core memories from my childhood. Ended up playing on the same 3v3 team as Larry Nance Jr. He was special even back then. Watched him do a drill once where he was 1v2 dribbling the ball up the court. Defenders were next to each other at half court to slow his momentum. He faked one direction, dribbled the ball between his legs from behind, and split the defenders for a breakaway dunk. Completely off topic but since we're reminiscing...

Folks forget a lot of these 'flareups' are just one continued battle ... the infamous Singletary/Linhart punch actually goes back to the previous year, MAC Tournament, final moments late in the game when a hard (very legal) Linhart boxout at the FT line caused Singletary to fall hard and hit his head. Kent immediately took Singletary out of the game. Don't know what happened first Kent/Akron game that next season, but the second game was 'the punch'

Made a great impression on you but not KD as the rumor was that big Larry lobbied KD to give little Larry a scholarship but it did not happen.

The women's All MAC teams were announced today, which makes me believe the men's will be tomorrow. I'm not even sure I could make a credible guess how it plays out. Nobody really stuck out this year in the MAC.

I think Shelbee Brown deserves some recognition for making all-MAC third team on what ended up being a pretty horrific team.
