As a graphic designer it drives me crazy and yes, I probably care more about this stuff than the casual fan. The issue I have is that the Akron wordmark isn't a logo. It's a stock Nike font from their Uniform Builder site using their generic "Script" font. I'm assuming whoever was in charge of ordering the basketball uniforms a few years ago, went to that site and picked that font for the jerseys. This is perfectly okay and it happens all the time. Some examples: Unless you're Ohio State, Oregon, Syracuse, etc. You order basketball uniforms from a specific list of templates. The athletic budget for smaller schools can't afford to have custom uniforms designed and honestly Nike isn't really worried about what Akron, BG and Toledo are wearing. The issue is that someone important liked it so much they wanted to make it the official logo of a D1 school. Basically the equivalent of going into Microsoft word, picking a clipart image and using it as an official logo. Something that's done by lower level High Schools. The full kangaroo and Z logos looked awesome on the helmets and hope Miller and Guthrie take note.4 points

The reality of college sports is that the P5 teams poach talent from lesser conferences. Who knows if Mumpfield would have stayed if the Zisp were successful. Good luck to him. With regard to Gibson, I'm not going to lose any sleep on that one. He looked good at times but at others showed why his best offer was from Chattanooga. I'm trusting Moorhead will bring in a P5 recruit transfer equal to or better than Gibson.4 points

The sky is not falling folks. If the program success over the next couple of years was based on one player then the Zips have bigger problems. Let’s celebrate Konata and wish him well. He has the chance to find his way on to a P5 school. Moorhead is the real deal and he is going to find several guys with Konata’s skill level.4 points

Agreed. But I think they probably filmed that at the Cleveland Hopkins airport.3 points

Taken from the FIU Football website. This is what Moorhead said on Joel Rodriguez. I like the part about recruiting as well! This staff is looking loaded!! "Coach Rodriguez brings a wealth of experience to the position as a player and a coach and combines it with tremendous passion and knowledge of the game. His players are well-coached, tough and productive. He was a huge reason for our success at Fordham. On top of it all, he is an absolutely tenacious recruiter. He will do a fantastic job for Coach Davis and FIU." - Joe Moorhead (Former Mississippi State Head Coach/Current Oregon Offensive Coordinator) https://fiusports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/joel-rodriguez/18213 points

If Konata doesn't think he can make it to the NFL at Akron - especially with Moorhead - then I don't want him here. Soon enough, this team will be full of guys who see a path to the NFL through Akron. If Moorhead talks to ZG5, Mumpfield, etc., and they end up staying - awesome. Otherwise, good luck with your next school.3 points

Assuming the above guys sign the dotted line, we will have big time Big Ten, PAC 12, SEC, ACC, and NFL experience on the staff between 4 coaches, with still the OC, DC, and several other position coaches to go. Two of the guys already on the staff have been at Akron before and will know how to sell the program to recruits/transfers. This is EXACTLY what I was expecting when Moorhead was rumored to be the guy. Absolutely STOKED it's playing out how it is.3 points

Yes, as designers, we do care more about this stuff than the casual fan. But, we also know what works and what doesn't. The Z works. The script doesn't. The Z is simple, bold and instantly recognizable. Everything we designers strive for in a logo. You hit the nail on the head with your comments about the script Akron. Extremely generic. That's fine if you want to be middle-of-the-road, but we want more.2 points

This has been a blast since the rumor of Coach JoeMo broke. We talk Coach. Now we're talking staff. Then we'll talk recruits. Then we'll finally have good football to discuss! Crazy times.2 points

There are 4 hotbeds to recruit - Ohio/Western PA, Florida, Texas, Southern Cal. If we're in two of those four automatically, it's hard to go wrong.2 points

For those hoping Old Man Winters would get another crack at the Zips HC position...his 2021 Wayne State Warriors matched Arth's 2-win total.2 points

Yeah, the spring showcase thing was whack. I get that the spring game technically takes away a practice session, but it’s a cool way to energize the fan base a little bit on the tails of basketball season heading into the summer. I have a feeling Guthrie would make the push to have one. Sell season tickets. Sell club level. Sell the suites. Have them open to the public, sell beer, post pricing and buying info all over the place. Have the players and coaches sign posters or something afterward. The more interaction and connection, the better. Those are the kinds of things I miss the most from the Brookhart era. I’m hoping Moorhead can bring back some of the pre-Infocision/iCoach aura around Akron football.2 points

Good wishes to Simon Spelling. Medina soccer had the greatest high school coach for the past 8 years https://medina-gazette.com/news/284206/high-school-soccer-simon-spelling-steps-down-as-medina-boys-coach/2 points

Non P5 schools need to create their own Bracket Buster event again to help with this. I miss the anticipated payback visit from Nevada, VCU, NDSU, etc. Those were fun.2 points

More of a privilege than a right to post on here. They need to rebrand the entire football program and game day experience.2 points

I'm trying to think about how excited I was when we hired Terry Bowden in order to temper my expectations for Coach Joe. It isn't working.1 point

Can we create a script Fear the Roo logo for helmets? So cool. Please don't show this to Gary Miller, or we might actually get it. 😁1 point

You have overlooked Georgia, which has emerged as a better area to recruit than Ohio/W Pa. But to your point, Georgia may also be well covered by our new staff. JM is surrounding himself with a rock star group of assistants. I hope Mumpfield reconsiders. This very well can grow to be a super place for him to be, especially considering, as others have wisely pointed out, few athletes ever make it in the pros.1 point

Exactly! I would even be excited for some MAC v. MAAC action. (Winner keeps the A?)1 point

I agree, but I don't think it is realistic. I have been astonished by how many kids who don't even see the field still think they are going to the NFL. I wish the NCAA included trade schools better suited for a different type of student athlete, too.1 point

It doesn't matter to me where the players come from as long as they can play. Beggars can't be choosers.1 point

I agree the portal is here to stay and good for the players. I would disagree that most players use it for better opportunities and facilities. Some get the opportunity for better programs but most are not happy with their circumstance and are looking for an opportunity to play and need to move to a lower level, lower level program within P5 or down to a G5 or even down to FCS or D2. In Akron’s case other than Brandon Council most our players are struggling to get opportunities at the FBS level let alone move up1 point
-
I think college football fans need to move on from the position of hating on players who enter the portal. Portability is here to stay, and it is more fair for the players. They usually move on for better opportunities and better facilities. For years there has been an expectation that the player be more loyal to the program. than the program is loyal to the player. If coaches keep open lines of communication they have a chance of winning the player back.1 point

Guess the good thing about ignoring Zips football for the past 3 seasons, I don't really get upset with these transfers.1 point

Yes, on the road. Someone was commenting about nobody showing up to the JAR because of who the opponents are. My comment was that these are the same type of opponents we always get to come to the JAR OOC.1 point

Am I bummed? Yeah. Is it the end of the world? No. I would love to have Mumpfield moving forward, but it feels good to have faith in the man in charge to quickly go out and get someone that is just as able and wants to be here.1 point

Certain players in Zips MSOC history are the gold standard at their position by which all who follow are judged. There have been many excellent central defenders in Zips lore, All Americans and NCAA Champions; a few became professional players. None have been as good as Simon Spelling. If you do not understand how dominant he was in the early eighties, you really need to ask some old timers. Remember that Simon was Steve Parker's assistant coach for several excellent squads in the mid to late eighties as well (1986 runner-up). His career coaching at Medina speaks for itself. See above. ZipsNation salutes you, Simon Spelling! We do not forget.1 point

All the conferences better than the MAC have challenges setup with one another. I wish the MAC was able to team up with the MVC and do a MAC vs MVC challenge.1 point

Sources: Akron expected to hire Reno Ferri as TE coach. He recruited elite TB Sean Tucker to Syracuse and coached NFL TB Terrrance West at Towson. He’s a former Akron assistant with strong ties to Joe Moorhead. Source: @Pete Thamel1 point

I literally posted this 9 minutes ago in the New HC Search thread after seeing @clarkwgriswold post Moorhead's staff at MSU. Had not seen this post yet. "Not sure where Terry Richardson is, as he's no longer listed on MSU's website and he doesn't have a Wikipedia. However, I wonder if he'd be a candidate for OC. He produced Donald Brown at UCONN, Lamar Miller & Duke Johnson at Miami, and coached Maurice Jones Drew during his stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played for the Bengals & Steelers in the NFL, so he is not a stranger to Ohio/NEO area. Interesting fact: he's the second to last player in Syracuse football history to wear the number 44. He would be an interesting OC candidate, at the very least." Very excited to hear that Terry Richardson is a target to join his staff at Akron in any capacity. Wow! I like Fessler as the QB coach, too. Clipboard holder for Penn State under Moorhead, followed him to MSU, and he had one heck of a QB room at OSUcks. This is exciting stuff. I'm almost as excited for the staff to be built as I was for Moorhead to be hired, largely because Moorhead is widely considered one of the brightest offensive minds in the country. Whomever he brings in will be successful at their respective position, I have no doubts.1 point

There's just not "that" guy. They have the benefit of depth but no one that has emerged as that guy to go get a bucket when needed. Obviously, LCJ filled that role for the last couple of years and two years ago you had two decent alternatives if he couldn't do it with X and Cheese. It's going to be interesting to see if any of these guys develop into "go to" guys.1 point

Seriously? "Skirt wearers"? I don't care how old you are. What a completely ignorant and unnecessary remark. I am not sure if you are calling the guys who work in design girls, or just trying to be patronizing towards women, but in either case, inappropriate.1 point
