  1. This is so well deserved for Beto. tremendous season

  2. BG getting creative on ways to get some attendance for MACtion games. Doubtful that this would create much of a ripple at Akron but would still like to see them try it.

  3. "The Boys played hard!" was his standard response first thing out of the box at press conferences. I used to enjoy talking to him at Green Hills Golf Course in Brimfield where he "worked" as a starter after The U. What stories! He would always stop where I was at basketball or football games and say Hi and kibbitz for a time. Great Guy.

  6. He always seeed to be a genuine person. He used to hold "Lunch with the Coach'on campus every week. I believe on Wednesdays. They had a pretty good spread too. He talked. Had some of the players attend. I still have the "Movin' A' I won at one of the lunches. Sadly his brand of football was outdated. But, he did recruit some good players. I think he recruited Jason Taylor among others. Check me on that.

  7. This. Not getting into whether or not the rebrand was a good decision and/or looks good. It happened, we have the A, but it's worthless if you don't get it on the bodies of the masses in the greater Akron area. Somebody should host a charity event where people bring in their gear from other colleges - mainly Ohio State - and trade it in for a Zips shirt/hat. Donate the Ohio State gear to Africa to get it out of the country, and get the Akron gear to the masses.

  9. I really liked the guy, he was very friendly. I bet he was a great fundraiser judging how he talked to people. An awesome big time high school coach/recruiter, a lot of us thought he could translate that to college football. He was a very nice man. Maybe too nice to be involved with big time college ball. Maybe that’s been Akrons problem, hiring great guys who aren’t ultra seedy recruiters. Rest In Peace Coach

  12. One of the nicest human beings I've ever met during my time around Akron. Genuinely kind and sincere person. He will be missed.

  13. It could be argued that he was the first of a string of "Faustian bargains" that have put UA in its current condition.

  14. Gerry was not a great college head coach. He was a great guy in general. He was 43–53–3 at Akron. Sadly, that's pretty good in comparison to recent Akron football.

  16. Then why are we slashing our budgets so severely if he was so good at bringing in donors? Why does football have $0 NIL? Kaulig and Wenz were around long before Guthrie, and will be around long after. I don't see giving Charles any credit for not offending them over the past three years.

  19. More and more 'fairness' is becoming a very lost element in our moral fiber. And sadly I'm just not talking about sports.

  20. Have to win games consistently to get students and the city remotely interested. Can't do that with the way the AD has scheduled over the past 7-10 years. It's a chicken and egg debate.

  24. At this point, the only scenario I can envision in which we do not get in to the tournament is by losing to Georgetown by two or more and then Georgetown losing and not playing well in the final. We are afterall, the Big East regular season champions, and we've not lost (thus far) in about thirteen games. (I am too lazy to review the schedule and figure out the exact number.)

  25. At the beginning of the football season my wife wanted a couple of new Akron shirts. She ordered them from the University's shop on-line. A week later she got an email that both items were out of stock. You can't make this ineptitude up.

  26. A few MAC schools have learned a painful lesson from the elimination of sports programs - they're also severing ties to dedicated current and future alums who would otherwise be very likely to donate money to the university. One school has determined that its elimination of men's track cost far more over the intervening decade than it saved.

  27. All I'll say is that Zippy (the live mascot) had a pouch going back to at least 1987 because I personally witnessed the KSU Flash tear her pouch at the ACME-Zip game. Zippy threw a real, deep punch into Flash's air hole. Good times.....

  28. I know this seems crazy, but the athletic department has no say in how the team shop and bookstore operate or what items they sell. One of the many frustrating aspects of the administration at UA. Hopefully RJ can change this.

  29. The one place not on campus where I've seen a fair amount of Zips gear is the Fairlawn Walmart.

  30. The Infocision team shop didn’t open until 30 minutes before game time for the homecoming game. There were 10,000 fans there, and the tailgate crowds arrived early. Lots of alumni were looking to buy gear, and the shop was closed. Ditto the last home game, with a lesser crowd. The bad news is the Arby’s A is lame. The good news is the team shop is never open so nobody can buy the items.

  32. One way to get the current A embraced would be to get it out into stores like Walmart and Meijer. What is available out there is very limited. I'm still looking for a hat ot two at either place. I have plenty of older hats from Walmart that are just fine. And put Akron and/or Zips below it. I also don't know how anyone can get excited by that merchandise with the bland block type.

  36. Ok.....you have read all that.... like me...you probably wonder where the cutoff point is.... let's find out together I am not a predictor.... for this purpose, I am going to say the highest RPI team(still playing) wins the conference tourney (yes, I know that means that I list Georgetown rather than Akron)...... but I need to be consistent I am going to use San Diego as winning their last game and getting bid....they have lower RPI than Oregon State but they should beat LMU 22 conference automatics 22. 37. I know it's kind of a tired topic with the logo, but this one is indeed my favorite. I also liked the A-roo but it wasn't really instantly recognizable as a kangaroo. Looked a bit too much like a donkey. But the Z is so unique, there are only two colleges in the country that start with a Z and I don't think anybody would confuse us with Zane(sville) community college nor Zaytuna college. There are over 100 institutions of higher learning that begin with A, and more than a dozen Division 1 football teams. For a logo you want something that is instantly identifiable, connected and has some uniqueness to it. I thought the Z was fantastic. I hate the rationale of going back to an A to be more connected with the community. I think that was a load of crap. Long live the Z!
