Glad to see this. I thought his lack of PT against good teams would have him looking. Unless he was on fire from 3, JG couldn't play him due to his defensive and rebounding issues. I will say he increased the intensity on the defensive side of the court as the season progressed and I think he can be a real contributor next year.3 points

I mean I guess it's good if we schedule a P5 or two outside this tournament3 points

For most, the jerseys will be interesting pieces in a man cave. Adult men look a little odd in a basketball jersey and they're the ones with the money to spend on such things.2 points

I think Josh Henderson will be a superstar. 6'5" and can stroke it from 5 feet behind the line. Tai Perkins is tough & won D2 POY in the Central Ohio Region, but his team was so deep it was kinda hard for me to gauge how good he really is. But to win POY... he's gotta be legit. I wouldn't expect either to play next year b/c of our returning depth, but @Illini Zip made a good point that Groce doesn't redshirt PG's (Tai Perkins) and after Illini Zip pointed that out I think he's right; I don't remember Groce redshirting a PG.2 points

I think the Jersey and Vest are priced very well. the listing does say an authentic Nike Jersey. if you buy a Cavs Jersey it cost $120-130... $159 is only $30 more for a piece of clothing you can't get anywhere else. I am assuming it a game jersey and the school is just purchasing more from Nike. Plus it helps Nate and Tavari as the proceeds are going to them. it's like thanking them for the hours of fun you spent watching them, plus you get a Jersey that might be 1 of 100. a Nice Vest like that is worth $40 to $50 but you are helping the school.2 points

During this period I turn into a little kid, constantly refreshing my phone hoping to see what Santa Wentz brought us.1 point

Understood, but have been told you can make a contribution to the “general fund” and state which account you want it allocated to.1 point

Had Akron sprung an upset, I'd probably have gotten a signed one for my man cave. I'm kind of limited on space at the moment.1 point

I had high hopes for him. At one point, and I think CK can take credit for this, there was concern he might just be the next Maishe Dailey. The team did okay without him.. Maybe it's just best to let him find his home and fill the roster with a better-fitting piece.1 point

A person who can't afford a $150 jersey likely isn't someone who they're marketing this product to anyway. The target demographic is likely upper middle class alums who plan to buy it for their kids, grandkids, or more likely man cave. There are plenty of other ways to get discounted Zips gear that fit into working middle class or college student budgets. Those people can contribute to the program by buying season tickets, attending games, spreading Zips Fandom, and if they so choose sending a small donation if they so choose to do so.1 point
-
Yeah, these aren't supposed to be bargains. The money goes to the NIL fund. Just a more fun way of donating1 point

I still have a small inflatable Goodyear blimp in my basement that was a giveaway back when I was at UA. Pretty sure that's the only contribution I know of lol.1 point

Xavier is looking at bringing back Chris Mack. Drake's coach is already going to Iowa. WVU and Nova are the two main jobs left.1 point

Looking for a bright spot.... Incoming transfer Jack Sullivan #19 provided real spark off the bench in limited minutes. He is quick-footed and very intentional. We need to see more of Sullivan.1 point

He posted an Instagram story yesterday that looked like he was at a mall in Columbus. No activity otherwise on his socials.1 point

There also just aren't many attractive openings this year. Sean Miller is expected to leave Xavier to take the Texas job. The Xavier job might have been appealing for Groce if not for his brother already having history there. Other than that the only other openings of note are Villanova, which is eyeing Drake's coach and I guess WVU.1 point

No, top seeds get preferential locations and that has always been the case1 point
-
Surprised MMK stayed to be honest, I still don't see him getting much PT next year, let alone if we bring in a B1G forward1 point
-
One fascinating aspect to all of this is how playing time shakes out. Our past transfers have typically been guys who were blocked and weren't going to play much, if at all, if they stayed. Right now, we have: Lyles/MMK N. Johnson/Mahaffey Okonkwo/Brisco Scott/Hardman T. Johnson/Young But we will have 2 open scholarships (maybe 3 if Harris leaves), and we obviously want to get better. How Groce manages all of this will be something to watch.1 point

I didn't think Kent was seeded, Loyola-Chicago either. But back to the metrics LC is 107 Kenpom and Kent is 109. That's my suspicion on the LC home game. Another thing: When Kent wins, shouldn't every team in the MAC get a boost in the metrics as well. Especially Akron and Miami. with a combined 5 wins over Kent. But while Kent's numbers have gone up quite a bit in the tournament run, everyone else has stayed the same. Doesn't make sense.1 point
-
I think this is at least the second time ... maybe the third, Kent has advanced to the NIT Elite Eight over the years. No ... It's not the tournament it used to be. But it's still a national tournament, and the teams they have defeated were both Top 100 KenPom teams when they played them. Take advantage of the opportunities you get. Give them credit for that.1 point
-
Yes, I saw some statistics earlier. I forget the exact numbers, but something like only 2 teams that were the 12-16 seeds shot above 30% from 3. A common theme for Cinderellas is they get hot from 3. That's probably more important than ever since top teams are more experienced and deeper than they have been in recent years past. It just didn't happen this year.1 point

The way his family posts on facebook I would find it very hard to believe he transfers1 point

The only way to take the next step is more money. We lose in the tournament because we have 2 and 3 star players playing against 4 and 5 star players. We have a top 10% coach and effort is never an issue. In the age of NIL the only way to get those 4 and 5 star kids is to pay them and the Akrons of the world are never going to be able to compete with P4 money. Can Akron outspend the PCCCs and BGs of the world? Yes, as long as they have guys like Bud Wentz. However, it is a completely different era now than it was when teams like George Mason, OU, Florida Gulf Coast and the like made their runs.1 point

And just like that, most things about the NCAAT that appealed to the casual fan are gone. If this continues into the future, there will be viewer apathy, and ratings and advertising will suffer. The suits are always so short-sighted. I was only planning to watch games featuring Cinderellas. Since there are none, I've lost substantial interest. There are other things I can spend my spring weekend days enjoying.1 point

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_men's_basketball_tournament_all-time_team_records Interestingly, of all the teams to play in the men's NCAAT and not win a game only Boise State (10) and Eastern Kentucky (8) are more than our total of 7 without winning, and we are tied with Long Island University, Nebraska, and South Dakota State So, we are due to win a NCAAT game! 😁😆1 point

Going to take a little time to get their footing. 95% of the goals from 2024 have moved on. For example, Stefan’s PK against Creighton is the only Big East conference goal scored by a returning player.1 point

I have just shared my frustrations with the state of the MAC and college basketball in general. But I too want to thank the guys for an entertaining and successful year. And even though we the fan base are dying to get this NCAA monkey off of our back, this year was another step in the right direction. And every player who contributes along the way is appreciated and deserves to be celebrated. So thank you to Seth, Isaiah and Evan. You all seem like great dudes and it’s been a pleasure watching from afar. And now, Tavari, back in the weight room with you. Marvin and Amani improve your driving and shooting and Okonkwo, free throws and finishing around the rim. Because we know Groce & Company with the help of Bud Wentz are not quitting. And I’m not going anywhere either. I have a scholarship chart that apparently needs a couple more spots added to it. Go Zips!!1 point

Don't think you should base what the MAC should do, based on your disappointments. Using this year, the MAC has 2 teams in the WNIT and a future member for 3 teams. The MAC is fine. MAC Buffalo against future member UMass in the second round of the WNIT at 2PM Sunday. ps. You will be our first of our 4 MACtion football games on Nov 4th. There should be very little dip in MACtion games. We'll loss the metro Boston crowd, but there are a lot of locals that will attend.1 point

Cutting women's basketball isn't even an option. It's a MAC requirement. To be clear my comment earlier wasn't intended to be disparaging. It was more of the variety of if we can finish at or near the bottom of the MAC with X player, we can certainly achieve that without them. It's not really a sky is falling situation.1 point

This a good post that shows your support for the program. Nonetheless it is headed for a rebuild again. Losing Mobley and possibly Brown adds to the loss of a foundation to build on. Compounding that is the questionable return of injured players and players with personal issues and you have little consistency, chemistry or culture. Groce caught lightning in a bottle when he brought in 9 new players, but his culture and tradition were firmly established and unchanging. Ryan does not have that advantage. I hope he rights this ship, but it is no knock on the program to cite reality. We welcome being proved wrong.1 point
-
And what men's program do you propose to eliminate to balance it out for Title IX purposes?1 point
-
If you guys are going to make snarky comments, you should at least know what your talking about. Considering the amount of injuries and other issues with players, this year's team still competed every night. You know that Bud Wentz also runs a NIL program for the womens team? We have some pretty good freshmen and will pick up a couple more players from the portal. Shelbee Brown will be back and those injured players will return too. Gensler is a good coach. Eventually things will start to go our way.1 point
