We should tip our hats to our AD for executing on what looks be a good hire. Anyone who thinks Akron isn't a great coaching opportunity is nuts. If you aim high, you hit high. If you aim low, you hit low. Guthrie aimed high. Hiring a good coach just takes a little more imagination than Ianello and Arth. Good grief.4 points

Since it's been years since I've been able to log in to my account(mes102) on here (I think it was the off season when Dambrot left and Groce was hired). I've been just reading the site but decided to make a new one since I can't even get into my email for that account. (facepalm to myself) Here are my thoughts: Ever since Moorhead was mentioned to be the hire, I've been looking at candidates for his staff. I've based it off of places where he's been since being the head coach at Fordham with stops at Penn State, Mississippi State, and Oregon. I will start with Oregon because I don't think he will bring anyone with him from Oregon. If you pay close attention to the offensive coaching staff at Oregon, most (if not all) of them have worked previously with Cristobal instead of Moorhead. Could be one of the reasons why he's looking to get out of there. Only one that I could see coming with Moorhead to Akron is Bryan McClendon but I highly doubt it. As for his stop at Penn State as offensive coordinator, I only see one possible addition to the staff from his time there. Matt Limegrover is currently the offensive line coach at Arkansas State. The current Michigan offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis, was on his Penn State offensive staff so I don't think that's a coincidence for how Oregon and Michigan had similar game plans against Ohio State's defense. As for his time as head coach, below are some names I would look at that might join his staff that he had at either Fordham or Mississippi State (most from his time at Fordham). Andrew Breiner - Current offensive coordinator with Florida International Michael Johnson - Current offensive coordinator with Floriday Atlantic Joel Rodriguez - Offensive Line coach with Florida International Tim Zetts - Offensive Assistant Coach with Green Bay Packers Shane Fogarty - Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator with Fordham Ian Pace - Offensive Coordinator with St. John Fisher College Mark Dupuis - Wide Receiver Coach with Old Dominion Tyler Bowen - Tight End Coach with Jacksonville Jaguars As for defensive coordinator, I think the no-brainer here would be Bob Shoop. He's currently the off-field defensive analyst for University of Miami and was the former defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, Tennessee, Penn State, and Vanderbilt. David Blackwell is currently the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech and wouldn't be shocked if his name pops up at some point. Another name that might come up would be Chris Marve, currently the Linebackers coach at Florida State. A couple other names that might be content with their high school head coaching positions but has had coaching experience with Moorhead. At the very least, might see a recruit or two from these schools from time to time. Tim Cary - Current Head Coach at Trinity-Pawling (NY) college prep school Jon Wholley - Current Head Coach at Avon Old Farms (CT) prep school I hope Shoop will become the defensive coordinator and I expect either Breiner or Johnson to become Moorhead's offensive coordinator and associate head coach. I expect Shane Fogarty to come on as special teams coordinator. Again, no knowledge or inside information on what Moorhead would do but this is my educated guesses.4 points

I respectfully disagree with the esteemed Farmer Jones. If Joe focuses on QB and skill position transfers before bolstering the OL, DL and LB’s, we’re in trouble. Re-recruit Gibson. Make sure Mumpheld and Mathison are in the fold. Personally I’d be happy if Norrils stuck around. That’s where I’d focus my early skill position “recruiting.”4 points

Wentz had only one scholarship offer to an FBS school coming out of high school. That means pretty much everyone missed him. He went to NDSU because he didn't have many options. It happens, some guys get missed because they played at small schools or because things clicked late for them. Josh Allen went to Wyoming. Derek Carr went to Fresno State. Jimmy Garroppolo went to Eastern Illinois. This shows you not all QBs went to P5 programs. Some fall through the cracks. That is fact. To say you have a 0% chance of making it in the NFL if you go to a MAC school is perhaps the worst take I've heard on this forum. Is it a lower percentage than if you went to OSU or Alabama, definitely. But it's not 0%.3 points

I don't agree that local talent is what produces a winner at Akron. When you look at other G5 programs that are successful, it isn't via local talent, it's by getting talent, period. Every G5 fan board thinks their area is a hotbed of talent and are upset when a new coach doesn't grab the local guys. In this age, the ability to recruit from the portal is what makes you successful.3 points

My guess is that the news from UA will break tomorrow afternoon that Moorhead hire will be official. News conference on Monday to intro the new coach on campus. Can’t wait to make this announcement official and go to the first home game in 2022!!3 points

Congratulations Mr. Guthrie and Dr. Miller for hiring Coach Joe Moorhead. You have renewed my faith in the program and I cannot wait to see the results. Please change all of our sports back to the "Z" Logo. When we had them they were considered one of the best and unique uniforms in the NCAA. Hopefully this post will get enough likes to show you it is what the fans want.2 points

In my experience, the head coach makes that call that we’re going to try to score here instead of running it out, and may provide a request on what he wants to see (“let’s take at least one deep shot here”), and the OC calls the plays. I’ve seen a lack of HC direction sometimes, like the OC calls a pass on first down and the HC breaks in and says knock it off and run the ball. Yes, the buck stops with the HC, but usually the OC is designing the overall scheme and the wrinkles for the specific opponent. The HC is responsible for selecting an OC with adaptability and the scheme the HC wants to run.2 points

I love response on twitter. So many "Why Akron?" "Akron sucks, he can do better!" "Should have waited for a better job!" "Am I missing something?!" Yeah you are missing something. Akron is a nice f'n school. We have a great stadium and fans that deserve to watch winning football. Even one Oregon fan chimed in with: If Moorhead was that bad shouldn't he be taking a "step down"? There are just so many angry people on social media that rant to their 30 followers, while hiding behind a keyboard. Just because a school's football team has been bad, doesn't mean they deserve to suck forever. There's always been an arrogance to fans of "big" schools. They love to make fun of schools like Akron and when something goes well for the underdogs, they get mad.2 points

Enrique is such an awesome guy, this semester he worked for intramurals being one of the coordinators for Sunday afternoon soccer, never seen another student-athlete do that. I also love the question about his grades lol2 points

I miss the Z. It was one of the coolest logos in all of sports. Additionally, our old football uniforms were the most beautiful football uniforms in the nation, regardless of level.1 point

He can put script Akron on the academic planners & supplies. Let the Athletic Director be in charge of what is marketed by athletics.1 point

The thanks for this hiring goes to one person only. He is the President of the University, Mr. Miller. He is changing the face of the University in the midst of hard times. Regarding the Athletic Department, Mr. Miller has provided the funds for the coaching salaries. All AD's want to spend money, but if the money is not allocated in the budget, the opportunities do not exist. So, Congratulations and Thank you President Miller for making this coaching change possible.1 point

Only Kent State could come up with those awful uniforms. I hope they paid someone to come up with this. Maybe they could be held liable1 point

I am not on twitter.....so I can't share them. David Trainor had a part 2 and part 3...to his tweet in his 3rd tweet...he wrote this about Larry "the Loser" Williams "He had zero business leading Student-Athletes, or an Athletic Dept."1 point

Brilliant. The past was filled with lazy and apathetic hiring. There are few more of those coaches at Akron. They won't last long1 point

Well that's not remotely accurate. Carson Wentz was just drafted #2 overall a few years ago from an FCS program. If you're good enough, the NFL will find you. That said, no 5* prospect would join a MAC team. Any NFL caliber QB on a MAC squad would be a 3* recruit who was a late bloomer.1 point

Already planning a football/cycling week-away road trip next September book-ended by Tennessee and Liberty. Road trips just weren't worth the time and expense in recent years. We A-R-E N-O-T going to suck!1 point

This cheer has gone on in Lot 9 during football pre-game parties for years. I would like to take credit for its origin, but I cannot and will not. There has been a full lot 9 of tailgaters belting this cheer out prior to entering the stadium. Also, see another post where this cheer happens at soccer games. I get it now. You are another of the $uckeye fans who likes to credit everything in the universe to that place in Columbus. Go ZI.........PS1 point

It's not the early 2000s anymore. There's precisely 0 chance a MAC QB has a shot at the NFL other than changing positions. Though why not go for him? However: there are other QBs on other benches that probably stand a better chance of landing.1 point

Ah yes, the national media. No excitement to see a bottom team hopefully become relevant. No, they just want to continue reporting on Alabama winning the title every year. Or Ohio State, whomever. All the boring storylines year after year.1 point
