I get it but I think your balls are safe. Enough has leaked out, Guthrie’s subliminal Twitter message. Moorhead wants to get through PAC 12 ship with no distractions, there is enough time after that someone can step up to OC for the bowl game & he will leave to come to Akron to build staff & get on the recruiting trail to hit the road running. That’s what I choose to believe3 points

Don't know if this is how the search will play out, but if Guthrie's going with the traditional understanding of that verse, it means it's a done deal, we just have to wait patiently for it to be consummated. In other words, it's good news. It's gospel.3 points

Not a peep on Wilson or any other plan. I heard through the grapevine that Eddie George was reaching out to Akron, not the other way around. And before Arth was even fired, I along with many folks at UA were expecting a name like Tony Alford to get more traction. While I like the idea of Alford, it’s clear that Guthrie is punching a good deal above that weight class. Guthrie demands excellence out of all programs. He is so different from Larry Williams. It’s taken a lot of folks by shock and even rubbed some the wrong way, but once you’re used to a decade plus of Wistercill and Williams, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have someone come in and ruffle some feathers. It’s clear he is not playing around with this search, no matter who ends up getting the job. The names we’re hearing speak volumes to the ineptitude of the previous hiring committee. Their top 3 were Arth, the Navy OC, and Texas RB coach, with the committee swooning over 9-13 UTC Arth. A member of that committee told me that it was a slam dunk no brainer after the final round of interviews. The biggest thing that won them over for Arth was his commitment to turn around the culture of poor academic and character standards. The fear they had with the Navy OC Jasper was that it would be far too drastic a change in culture that would set the program too far back. Yeah, I should’ve known right there this was going to be a mess. This search, however, is unrecognizable by Akron standards.3 points

The media in neohio has always irked me. They always touted as being a supportive part of the neohio community putting reporting in the area first. However it's the same old 99% of reporting coming from one city on the lake and one in Central cow fields. I have since moved to Charlotte NC and wow what a difference in support for our local community and surrounding colleges like davidson, uncc, app state, and hell even gardner webb. They will show sports highlights from all these colleges and do actual reporting and interviews with coaches. They will even put the college logo of the team playing that Saturday on the weekly weather planner so that people will remember to go to the game! I'm really glad i moved here, they actually seem to support their community.3 points

I can understand that, just wasn’t sure if being the “head coach in waiting” thing would be an attractive enough draw2 points

When a school moves a coach along primarily on the basis that a a program is struggling under her leadership then hires a person from her very staff you have to question the decision making.2 points

The news media in NE Ohio is currently more concerned with social justice engineering and lecturing than they are in actually reporting news. Most of what they present as news is nothing more than opinion.2 points

I agree 100%. The current Zip fans are great and really are die hards. But, we do not have the number of fans to fill up the Big House like the Wolverines, or even the Info. I loved going to school at the University of Akron. I had many great experiences and memories. My only regret is not being able to participate in a game like Alabama Auburn or OSU Michigan. The closest that I came was the 86 basketball run to the NCAA. We started out with 20 fans and ended up having weekday parties and filled the JAR for the OVC run and championship.2 points

My guess regarding coaches - Maybe a Grad Assistant. That's about it. Incumbent Players? Whomever wants to stay, and buys into his program. 2022 Recruits - I'll guess a handful. Probably < 5 of those who remain committed would be offered by the new coach My guesses based on past "new regime" history...1 point

That's how I took it. "Look, what you're hearing is true. But that doesn't take my focus away from making sure our offense kicks Utah's ass on Friday night. Anymore questions? No? Cool. Go Zips - errrm... - I mean Ducks."1 point

So we have demonstrated our willingness to pay $500k per year for a D1 win. If we pay the new coach $1.15m any more than 2 wins per year and we are ahead of the game.1 point

This whole coaching search has been nuts. Quiet, but nuts. Now we have the AD leaving some crumbs on Twitter?! This feels like Big Time College Football! 😂1 point

I assume there's a clause in Arth's contract that he loses his UA pay if he accepts a coaching gig elsewhere? Bowden took a grad student position and took UA's money. But Arth is young, and marketable as a position coach somewhere. UA will likely be on the hook for little, or none of Arth's salary if he ends up coaching elsewhere. At least that is my understanding.1 point

Joe was my #1 choice but thought he had got to far up the food chain for it to happen. Reading all this the last 2 days has really got me excited. The list of candidates a lone is at a higher level than we have seen. I wonder if our 2 week night national TV games played into this. We showed there is potential here and we got a lot of love from the national media during those games. That si article showed why Joe would come here. He was loyal to his alma mater and stayed there longer than expected till the right job came a long. A job that was close to his family. Our opening does both of those things. He can come back to where he got his start. In a program he knows. In a place that is close to home.1 point

"Heaven" would like to have a word with you. Ironically enough, both teams in the 2021 Field of Dreams game scored more points each (9-8 was the final score) than Iowa's football team in two games in 2021; the combined score was as much or more than Iowa's point total in 12 games since Ferentz took over as OC.1 point

The search function on the Twitter machine has been my best friend for about 24 hours now trying to dig for info. I’m growing tired of seeing all of the “he’s too qualified for Akron!” Well, yeah. But people seem to forget that: 1. Coaches are people. Will you always go to the money or do you also value feel and where you feel comfortable? 2. Akron is not a bad job (at all, IMO) because all the coaches have failed, it looks that way because they’ve had dysfunctional coaching and admin No bleep Akron is probably the least “enticing” of Moorhead’s options. But these know-it-alls fail to recognize that Akron jump started an amazing career for this guy. Maybe he wants to bring it full circle? Akron fans sure hope so.1 point

Well, there's certainly something cooking. There has been roughly 18 hours for reports to come out of Moorehead denying his interest or saying he has no idea where these reports came from. Land the big fish, Mr. Guthrie! 💪💪1 point

Morehead..... I hope it's true. I thought he would be out of our league in terms of interest and price. Akron badly needs competency at the helm. His resume smells of more competency than any other coach in the division or even the conference. Some guys reach their level. Joe is a G5 head coach or a high level coordinator. If you want to lead, you become a head coach. If you want to follow, you stay a coordinator. Joe is a good leader. He did well at Fordham and MSU. He knows how to lead a team. He also developed a good list of QBs. For those who root for defense, his 2018 Bulldogs lead the nation in total defense. He was on a MAC Championship team at Akron so he knows what it takes. If this is true, and God I hope it is, there will be brighter days ahead.1 point

Completely disagree. @Hilltopper has thrown as many college TD passes as Marousek and Jankowski combined. In the transfer portal era there are scads of decent, disenchanted QB’s falling from the trees. If QB is a problem for the Zips next season, we have bigger issues than QB…we will have picked the wrong guy to turn around Akron’s football program. Just my opinion tho…😇1 point

I get made fun of frequently by friends and family because they are all fans of teams like Penn State, Ohio State, Pitt, etc. People ask me who my college team is and it will always be Akron. My response is always that I'd rather watch the Zips lose every game than root for some random school I have no connection to (which most "big schools" fans do not). I got a but tipsy watching the Zips win the National Championship in soccer in the packed Barley House and make a few NCAA basketball appearances during my time there. Held the trophy, talked to Faust, Dambrot, Porter and Bowden on different occasions. I feel like being an Akron fan, I appreciate the small victories so much more. OSU fans are ready to jump of bridges because they lost to Michigan. The Zips barely lost to the Wolverines and it was probably my favorite Zips football memory.1 point

Exactly. He wasn’t happy here all year. Believe he was leaving even if Arth wasn’t fired. He didn’t play Saturday because he wanted to preserve his health and his stats from his 2.50 good games this year.1 point

Brookhart had to sell Frye on staying after Owens' firing, although transferring back then was a lot more daunting than it is today. I'll hold out hope that Gibson is open to at least listening to the new coach's sales pitch. If it is Moorhead, and he promises to bring in some Jr and Sr P5 OL transfers, ZG5 should strongly consider staying.1 point

And this is what we call Circular reporting. And how our so-called independent media works now. 1. Take a rumor tweeted out by 1 person. 2. Keep citing it over and over on different sites 3. Now add the work "Sources Say" to the citation. Boom -- full on press.. used to be you needed at least 2 sources to corroborate the facts to run a story-- not anymore... a guy in his basement with a smart phone and twitter account can affect us all. My favorite is when the sites start citing each other as the source.. that is priceless.1 point

Good luck to Zach. That BG game was a lot of fun this year, and he was almost a hero against Ball State and WMU. Hate to see him go as a player, but he was a big time Arth guy and was going to go wherever Arth went. Perhaps he will wind up back at Akron after a coach is named. But I'm at peace seeing him go, I can't disagree with his decision in any way.1 point

If this become reality, I will be so stoked to renew my season tickets as this would be SO exciting for the future of the program in my opinion! Get it done Guthrie!!!1 point

This should easily be one of the top mid-major jobs in the nation. Best facilities in the MAC, most beautiful college football stadium in the nation, playing in a conference where it's not difficult to attain success, good yearly rivals in KSUcks, Ohio, Buffalo, and Toledo (hear that MAC?!). Akron is the hub of NEO; a football-crazy hotbed. We have to battle the Cleveland sports and the Buckeyes for attention, but if the RubberDucks can average near 5K, there is no reason (if we win) we shouldn't average close to 20K per game. In my lifetime, the Cleveland tv media did absolutely everything in their power to downplay/ignore anything positive happening in Akron (why I'm not much of a Cleveland sports fan to this day), but as channels 3,5,8 & 19 have lost their influence, there's no reason Akron should continue with an inferiority complex. (Though it could take a generation to outgrow.) Love that Guthrie comes in and takes Akron seriously; most NEOhioans have been programed not to. I hope he his actions clearly convey to the Cleveland media, & Terry Pluto especially, to either do the same or go f*ck themselves.1 point

I was at the Indiana game on Saturday and Marshall looked pretty good. Their main problem was they had no one who could handle Jackson-Davis inside as he set an Assembly Hall record with 43 points. It may be a tough one for the Zips.1 point

According to Pete Thamel on Twitter, Joe Moorhead has emerged as the leading candidate I didn't think he'd be on the radar simply because he's overqualified and too expensive. I like where this is headed!1 point

There are several posters here who are skeptical or disliking Guthrie. Give the guy a chance. Go talk to him. You will be impressed and you will have hope that he can turn our dumpster fire around. He inherited a mess. Williams took the cowardly route out of Akron saying he couldn't handle the changing environment in college athletics meaning he did not want to put the work or commitment into righting the Zip ship. He also didn't want to live with his lousy hire for football. It will take Guthrie time. He can't do it overnight. He made the excellent call in firing Arth. He has put other coaches on notice. He expects performance, not excuses. He has not cut the budget any further, in fact he is looking for ways to reward performing programs. BTW, football has one of the biggest budgets in the MAC. Funding is not the issue. Leadership, or lack thereof, is. All I'm saying is give the man a chance.1 point

Moorhead was another guy who always struck me as a douche bag on a personal level. Ego the size of Texas, and he's another guy who would just use this job as a stepping stone. Also, his offenses were good in comparison to what we've seen the last few years, but still didn't put up close to the numbers of Winters. Edge to the true Akron guy. Winters > Moorhead1 point
