I took a few friends to the game & hyped it up to see Emoni.  After the game I apologized for wasting their evening.

You'd be better off just hyping up the Zips

I saw where he worked out for 3 teams(Boston, Cleveland & Orlando) and was non rated.

Emoni? Interesting. He should just go to the European leagues. They don't have guns so half his problems take care of themselves.

Emoni Bates Emerges as a Star in the Summer League

Bates helped the Cavs win the Summer League championship on Monday night and was named to the All-Summer League second team after averaging 17.2 points on 43.9% shooting, including 40% (18-for-45) from the 3-point line, over six games. He averaged nearly 30 minutes per game in the 40-minute contests and also averaged six rebounds per game and shot 100% on his 13 free-throw attempts

So you can take the boy out of EMU and the EMU out of the boy?

Great article from Terry.

The University has a list of players from the last 2 decades that need their jerseys in the rafters soon. Zeke, LCJ, and Freeman. Special era of Zips basketball.

Impressive team GPA as well.

I love that story.  I still say if a ref did not call a questionable offensive foul for  a moving screen on him with 3 minutes left against UCLA fouling him out Akron would have had their first NCAA tournament victory.

All of the feels.

*Think about how not only did these four seniors adamantly want to stay, but Ali Ali wanted to come back (and for the record, I think it's great Groce welcomed him back with open arms rather than being petulant and prideful about it).

It demonstrates how much Groce creates an environment that players WANT to stay in, and that's worth its weight in gold.  Yes, we will still lose players, including good ones who have a place on this team, to the transfer portal.  But if we are doing that at a rate that's markedly less than other schools, how valuable is that?

*I'm a sucker for weird/random trivia, and "Enrique Freeman worked in HR at the Rock and Roll HOF" is a great one.

*Can't find anything about his Topps deal.  Where can I get some Topps Freeman cards/merch? I'd rather support them than Barstool.

From the Zips post game notes. Freeman is eight rebounds away from recording 1,000 rebounds in his career. He'd be just the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as a Zip. All from a walk on. Is there a college basketball walk on hall of fame? 🤣 Also according to those same notes if the Zips beat FIU, it will be their best start in their D-1 history.

In the postgame interview responding to Joe Dunn saying (IIRC), "Coach, I'm so glad you hung those 'Walk-On Tryout' flyers in the Rec Center."  Coach Groce said, "Enrique's a unicorn.  I could coach for another 50 years and a situation like Enrique's would never happen again."

Enrique's so good he boxes everyone out - including his own guys. 🤣 Which begs the question - who are the other five? Hint: none of them played after 1975 - so answers like Romeo Travis and Zeke Marshall are not correct.
